Ken-Pringle thank you. i unchecked the Anyone can REGisTER box immediately. But now do I try to sift through those emails searching for the legitimate subscribers or delete them all?

You need to go to Setting>General from your WordPress dashboard and uncheck the box that says: "Anyone can register". Also, delete these other users.

Looks like you have your answer, I used to get them alot, switch off the membership.
