Today, I’d like to share 10 ways to make more money with your website.

If you’ve been building and maintaining your website for any period of time, it’s a good time to “step away” from your website business for a few days and look at it from the outside in. Instead of working in your business, work on your business. Think about ways you can improve, instead of just focusing on what needs to be done.

It’s easy to get beat down with the mundane, to get stuck in the minutia and confuse the trees with the forest. Most of us are so busy “building” and “maintaining” our websites that we forget to focus on the big picture: making money. Sometimes you have to step back before you can move forward.

I’ve been building websites for 10-years now. I make my full-time living doing it. No, I’m not some 7-figure earner, but I do make a nice income and have a great quality of life. Both my wife and I get to work from home! We are blessed.

I’ve made more mistakes than most, but I’ve learned from each mistake, and keep getting better and better every year. Today, I'm going to share some success tips I've learned through the years.

Your website is a business. In most cases, you probably started your website to make additional money, or to create a full-time income.

In any business, there are only three ways that I know of to make more money. You can:

  1. Get more customers (find new customers and lead generation)
  2. Sell more stuff to your current customers (up-sells and cross-sells)
  3. Get your current customers to order more often (repeat business)

10 Ways to Make More Money with Your Website

What I want to do in the paragraphs below is show you how to make this happen with your website. We’re going to cover 10 simple ways to make more money with your website. I hope you have an open mind and are ready to learn.

# 1: Build Your Email List

The money is in the list. I'm sure you know that already.

Nearly 90% of my affiliate income comes from email marketing. Even though my two websites are rich in content, and generate lots of traffic, my number one objective is to get my visitors to opt-in to my email list, so I can stay I touch with them a few times each week.

I email my list MINIMUM three times per week, and sometimes more than that. Most of my successful mentors email their list DAILY. Frequent communication is key.

You want your audience to remember you. You want your audience to know you, like you and trust you. The only way to make that happen is frequent communication. Provide value and communicate often.

Things You Can Do

  • Create a popover on your website
  • Add an opt-in form to the right column of every page on your website
  • Create an “irresistible offer” for your visitors
  • Add an opt-in form to the bottom of each page/post on your website

# 2: Focus on 3 Income Streams

One big mistake that many new online marketers, bloggers and webmasters make is trying to promote too many different income streams at once. I have found that to be a big mistake.

Although my websites have over 40 income streams, I did not start out that way. I started with one income stream, then added another and then another.

The last thing you want to do is confuse or overwhelm your visitors by giving them too many options. A confused prospect does NOTHING.

My best advice is to find 3 income streams that make sense to you and focus on those, until you master them and create a steady income.

Things You Can Do

  • Evaluate your current income streams
  • Get rid of your income streams that do not produce
  • Consider testing one new income stream every 90-days
  • Always focus on promoting your top 3 income streams
  • Never be scared to experiment with a new income stream

# 3: Sell Sponsored Listings

Sponsored listings are hot right now. Once your website gets a steady flow of traffic, at least 500 to 1,000 unique visitors per day, you should begin selling sponsored listings.

A sponsored listing is when another business or person writes and article, pays you a fee, and you publish it on your website. This gives your website fresh content that you don't have to write yourself.

Things You Can Do

  • Put a notification on your website that you accept sponsored listings
  • Publish your rates and requirements
  • Do some research on how much your competitors are charging for sponsored listings
  • Only publish sponsored listings that are unique content and relevant to your niche
  • Make sure the sponsored listings you post are not BORING

# 4: Sell Advertising

Selling advertising is a great way to make more money with your website. Many small businesses, and big businesses, are willing to buy text links, banners and sponsored listings.

You should at least consider this. The rates you can get for selling advertising are often more than you would make promoting an affiliate product in the same space on your website.

Things You Can Do

  • Create an advertising page on your website
  • Offer several advertising options (links, banner ads, sponsored listings, etc.)
  • Publish your rates
  • Talk with a few of your competitors, or visit their blog, and see what type of rates they offer
  • If your website is new, consider giving first time publishers a discount on their purchase
  • Email your subscribers about your advertising options

# 5: Reduce Your Bounce Rate

Once you get people to your website, you want to keep them there! Keep your website simple and clean. Don't use FLASH. Make sure your website loads quickly, is easy to navigate, and the layout is easy to follow.

Things You Can Do

  • Visit your analytics account and determine your current bounce rate
  • Do some online research about ways to lower your bounce rate
  • Try to improve your bounce rate every month

# 6: Create a MONEY Page

A money page is ONE page on your website where you have all of your revenue streams listed in one place. It could be a resources page, or something similar. Other than collecting emails, the purpose of your website should be to direct your visitors to your money page. On my websites, the resources page is my money page.

Things You Can Do

  • Create a money page on your website
  • List all of your income streams on that page
  • Create internal links on your website sending people to that page

# 7: Make It Easy to Contact You

This might sound weird to some of you, but make it easy for your website visitors to contact you. Put your phone number and email on every page. Have a way for people to contact you by social media and regular USPS mail.

When people call you, ANSWER your phone. One of the biggest compliments I get is that I am accessible and I answer my phone. This leads to a lot of additional sales. Realize that people want to do business with a real person. Sometimes they have questions and want to talk.

Things You Can Do

  • Add a contact me page to your website
  • Publish your mailing address, email, phone number and social media accounts
  • Make it easy to contact you
  • Respond to all contact requests promptly
  • Treat everyone you talk to with respect

# 8: Promote Big Ticket Items

It’s hard to make much money on a website when you are promoting affiliate products you only make a few dollars on. For example, to make a lot of money with Google AdSense® you need to have a TON of traffic.

Most people don’t have that luxury. Earning a few cents on a click doesn’t add up too much, unless you get thousands of clicks each day.

Personally, I've found it's easier to make a $1,000 commission on an affiliate sale than it is to sell 200 items you make a $5 commission on each sale.

I believe it’s important to have several affiliate programs you can make upwards of $100 to $5,000 per sale.

Things You Can Do

  • Research big ticket affiliate products in your niche
  • Find 1-2 that make sense to you and will provide value to your website visitors
  • Start promoting it on your website and in your email marketing

# 9: Connect with Influencers

One of the best things you can do to make more money with your website is to connect with influencers in your niche. Go to Google® and find 10-20 influencers in your niche.

Reach out to them. Give them a call or send them an email. Start commenting on their blog. Talk to them about joint ventures and other win-win things you can do to help each other out.

Make sure the conversation is not just about you. Make it about them. Focus on how you can help each other.

This can lead to so many great things, such as guest posts, social media shares and added exposure for all parties involved.

Things You Can Do

  • Research the five to ten most popular websites in your niche
  • Reach out to each webmaster individually and begin a friendship with them
  • Only talk about win-win deals when you talk with them
  • Make the conversation about them

# 10: Develop a Marketing Plan

All successful businesses have a written marketing plan. Guess what, your website is a business! You need a written marketing plan for your website.

It should outline your goals, mission, vision, marketing budget, target market, and daily action plan. You should review this document daily, fine tune it as needed and have the discipline to follow it daily.

Things You Can Do

  • Search online for example website marketing plan
  • Use that document as a template and create your own marketing plan
  • Share your marketing plan with a trusted mentor or peer
  • Refer to it daily, update it frequently and follow it relentlessly

How much would you charge for a sponsored listing/post (#4)? Today, I got an email about guest/sponsored post on my site and no idea how much I should charge.

Also it's unclear who would write the post, sounds like that person/site would: "I have a few article ideas that I think would be a really great fit for your site." but not sure yet.

Trying to find out WA'ers who have experience with sponsored posts before I respond to their email.

Chuck, have you personally accepted sponsored posts?

Typically, they would write the post and you would review and edit as needed. Or, for an extra fee they could have you write it. I personally would not even consider a sponsored post for less than $250, and it would have to be great content and relevant to your niche. You will get a lot of requests for sponsored posts from people on a budget, saying they have like $50 to $100. Just delete those. They are a time waster.

Did a quick Google search and it seems that a lot of bloggers advise a minimum $250 fee (and that I should push that it's an evergreen content to convince the other party).

BUT, these bloggers also mention it as if they themselves write the content, not the company that sponsored the posts, so I'm a bit lost.

Should I charge minimum $250 even if it's not me writing the sponsored content?

At the moment I have about 14-15 page views a month, very good rankings for "best of" posts and reviews and even some info posts.

Now, the company seems to be a big one, and their content is amazing IMHO. (What do you think of Fix the Photo dot com yourself?).

Last question:

The lady who reached out to me also asked about the possibility to insert their lifetime links to one of my articles. And asked how much it would cost. What would you charge in this case?

Thanks for your advice, Chuck!

I don't sell "do follow" links on my website. Google hates that. All links I give are "no follow". Most people don't want that type of link and won't pay for it.

With just 14 page views per month, I would not even consider sponsored listings until you have at least 30k page views per month. That is just my opinion of course.

If I was writing someone's content for them, it would be minimum $250 for the listing, plus my fee of writing the content, which would be at least another $100.

I hope that helps.

Thanks for your advice! I didn't realize they would want a do-follow link. Perhaps I shouldn't get bothered with it.

By the way, when I have external non-sponsored links to other good resources, I think by default they are do-follow links. Is that OK?

Just make sure all affiliate links are no follow. Links to helpful content can be do follow.

Oops, pretty sure all my affiliate links by default are "no opener". Will have to check fix that then. Thanks for the advice!

Wow, this is definitely a great post, I'm going to bookmark it.
I will start with number 1, but the thing is I don't get much visitors coming up to my website right now, I'm trying to get involved with social media platform, and what are some tips to build an email list?
Thank you, Chuck.
Jacqueline

Thanks for the comment.

1. Put a popover on every page and an opt-in form on every page.
2. Consider doing some social media or paid advertising to your site after you have added the popover.

Thank you so much for your help, Chuck, tell me a bit more about popover? ( English is my third language) sometimes I don't get the exact meaning of some words in English.
Jacqueline

It's the same thing as a popup on a website.

So much great information. I will have to study this for a while.
Thanks Sandy

Glad I could help!

Not sure where to start
Sandy

Pick one of the 10 things and start with that.

Hi Chuck, great post. I see your 10 years online has definitely made an impact on your success. I will be looking for more tips and tricks that will impact my website. I don't really have a favorite of your tips here.

I do have a least favorite...the making myself accessible. I understand the whole reason behind it and it really makes sense. Its that this online business helps to stay anonymous, sort of. But, if I feel like it is necessary to provide my contact info...I'll do it at a later date.

I don't sell products, but promote WA through my website, so what exactly would I put on my money page? Especially, right now, since I have not made any income through my website yet.

I wish you the best!
Bob

I like to include my phone number. My phone rings off the hook. Yes, some folks are telemarketers. But tons of my website visitors call me and then all say WOW, you actually answer the phone. These conversations lead to tons of sales.

I actually don't need my phone ringing off the hook at the moment. I still work a J-O-B...oooh ugly word, I know. But, at the moment that is what pays the bills, barely...LOL!

Personal decision. You could always get a free Google Voice account and just have people leave messages.

Now that's an option. Thanks.

I think developing a marketing plan is the foundation one needs. I don't have one and just wonder around. LOL

Failing to plan is planning to fail. I learned that as an Army Officer. Having a written plan is more than half the battle.

I love one line quotes. Have to share this. Really good for this time of year. Need to plan for 2019!!!

Excellent post Chuck!

I agree with dpanic63 about the higher commission items: why work 500 times as much to make the same money as 1 sale on a high ticked item? Great advice!

I also like the tip about networking with other site owners in your niche and becoming a trusted ally. Why make enemies of folks whose established sites and user bases you can leverage for greater reach yourself? It's swimming upstream!

Speaking of streams, I also like your advice on consolidating your revenue streams to 3 or less or begin with, that way we can focus better on what is working until we've built up the momentum to further diversify.

Anyways, Excellent post, a lot of value in here.
Thanks for sharing it with us, I appreciate it!

Glad I could be of help. I've done so many things wrong through the years. I wish I had read a post like this when I first got started trying to make money with a website.

Great Post Chuck

Love the one about making the higher commissions

Whether you making 5$ off of a sale of 500 it is the SAME amount of work, so might as well get the most return for the effort.

And yes these lessons you shared are all HARD Earned, thanks for sharing that Wisdom,

Have a great rest of this year, and will look forward, you putting more of that wisdom, in 2019

BTW

Welcome to the WA Community and Platform

Great to meet you

Cheers

Dino

Excellent tips Chuck!

These are all great tips. I'm going to bookmark this post!

The one I was looking at as recent as yesterday is tip #6 and this was because I signed up as an Affiliate with a company yesterday and they suggested this as a way to get more customers.

You have just reconfirmed it.

Thanks once again for an excellent post!

Glad you liked my post, Jackie. It took me about 2 hours to write and 10-years to learn.

You bet! I could see your experience shine through when I read it!
