Why do so many Wordpress Themes not display the full header when it is uploaded but just a band at the top of the site? Struggling

Hi Chris, I would follow along with nathaniell's recommendations. Guy seems like a wiz at this stuff.

Best wishes,
Michael

Every WordPress theme is different, so it's hard to advise on specific themes without having direct experience with that particular theme. That being said, there are a few basic strategies to follow for designing your website.

1. Learn about custom menus. You may have several menu "locations", and you'll see those options in the Menu area. Another thing people like to do (including myself), is to create Category Pages, so when someone clicks a menu item, it leads to a list of related posts. 2. Widgets control a lot! They're always in the sidebar, but you can sometimes add widgets to your header, footer, or blog posts too: 3. If you want to upload a logo (I recommend Fiverr.com for cheap, professional logos), then you may have to find the theme documentation for a specific size requirement. You can look up your theme name in Google and contact the theme creator, or try to add a dummy logo first, and your theme may make a size recommendation.

Some themes are clever and allow you to resize/crop right WordPress, while others require that you resize your image before uploading.

4. If you add images to specific areas like sliders, headers, or something else, the #1 issue people face is image size. Make sure you upload a high quality image with the correct dimensions to the area you want to upload. At the same time, images that are too big can cause issues with slow loading of your page!

You may have to experiment with this a bit, and it's why I usually recommend to go super simple with your first theme.

Always check the ideal size of your header, the template should give you that info. Good idea is to resize it then in paint for example and then upload it

Done that, but it still does it. I found one that's working, after several tries with others that display a full header image, but when I install my own the image is just a bar at the top. The Template I have now is out of desperation, not preference.

I would like to change the template. How do I select another WA free template?

Sounds like you got the help you needed here Chris. Awesome!

I did too! Loving it more here. WA does more than it says on the Tin!

Thank you Marion. A most useful video.

Hi Chris!
You do this under 'Appearance' on your WordPress dashboard. 'Themes' should be available for you to browse and select.

Thanks, yes, I have found it. Unfortunately it keeps giving a message that the upload has failed.

Free templates are found on Site Content on your Website.
Not sure if this is what you are looking for.
