What Is Resilience And How Can It Help You?
What is meant by Resilience?
The dictionary definition is "the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness."
That is a great capacity to have, and one which we all need, so it is not really surprising that there are now trainings in Resilience.
In fact, for some time now the US army has been training its troops in Resilience. Personally, when I first heard that I found it rather surprising, as we are actually talking about emotional resilience, and you don't really think about the armed forces as being "touchy feely"!!
So what is needed for Emotional Resilience?
- Emotional Awareness - the ability to understand your own feelings and also the feelings of other people
- Perseverance - never giving up
- Self-belief - the belief that you are in control of your own circumstances
- Optimism - always seeing the best in every situation
- Knowing the value of surrounding yourself with a supportive network
- Sense of Humour - the ability to laugh whatever difficulties face you
- Ability to Learn from your Mistakes
It is possible to develop these traits, and once you have, your levels of stress will be far less, and you will be be able to react to difficult situations in a calmer, clearer way. Once you develop the right attitude, all these things will be possible.
One important way to do this is by using positive self talk. Whenever you have a negative thought, replace it immediately with a much stronger positive one.

where I found much of this information after I heard about Resilience training on the radio programme which I mentioned in a previous blog.
Resilience will help whatever situation you find yourself in, and it can definitely help you with your business by giving you coping strategies when you run into difficulties.
If you have, many thanks for reading this, and I wish you all a positive, optimistic and productive day :)

Our subconscious mind picks up on whatever we feed it, so it's vital to stay positive. Thanks for the encouragement, Chrissie! :)
Is there a correlation between emotional resilience and emotional intelligence? Do you need the latter in order to develop the former?
Interesting question. I don't know the definitive answer, but as far as I can see they are more or less the same thing, and both can be learned, or developed. :)
It is a necessary quality in life Chrissie. Some people condition themselves in the extreme for resiliency. Checkout my former post about Navy Seals Fantastic Endurance that can conquer anything US Navy Seals
A lot of times I have a positive outlook on life because only God knows what's going to happen to you.
That is positivity Roger, and with that you are more than half way there!! The best of luck :)

Very interesting Chrissie. I didn't know the forces were touchy feely either. I think everyone should be working on resilience just like you have described. Thanks for this post.
