My Gmail Has Been Hacked!

Hi Everyone

This morning when I went to check my Hotmail email, was shocked to discover that I appeared to have sent myself an email from my Gmail account!

This email evidently wanted to give me some very exciting news, and was signed from someone called Binary Deposit Notification. It contained a link which I did not click!

It was pretty horrifying to realise that my Gmail account, which I use only rarely, had been HACKED!

I have never given my password to anyone nor would I ever do so. So the only conclusion I can make IS that it has been hacked. I had put my hotmail address in my Contacts, so obviously whoever is using my account has sent the same message to all of my contacts. Great!! But thank goodness I had my hotmail address there, or I would have known nothing about the hacking.

I have already reported the incident to Gmail, although it was not easy to find where to do this. I hope you never have occasion to need it, but if you should;d need to report any kind of fraud or hacking to Gmail, the link is here.

Has anyone else ever had anything like this happen? I should be most interested to hear. If you do come across any kind of scam or food, it is so important that it is reported immediately. I'm sure you will agree that there is far too much fraud and scamming online, and we need to do everything we can to stop it

I must now head over and change my password - in fact I am tempted to completely close the account.

Anyway, I hope that you all have great, positive and productive day :)

holy crap... thats some serious stuff. no one like being compromised specially on the internet.. i do hope all ends up fine tho
lately people i know are getting phone calls and texts from me that are not me. a telemarketing group has found a way to use my phone number and my contacts to call people .... and have my contact numbers call me.
happens about once-twice a week
with new tech comes new issues.

I don't think your email account has been hacked Chrissie. Some malicious people have found a way to send emails which look like they've come from someone else. I get at least 2 emails a day from marion @ gmail.com which does not exist as an email address.

Just mark it as spam and delete it.

Thanks Marion, good advice :)

Sorry that happened to you!

Thanks Holly :)

Sorry to hear. Nobody should have to go through this. I think just changing password would be enough but it's good to take extra precautions if you like to create a new Gmail Account.

Good luck & hope all goes well.

Daniel

Many thanks Daniel :)

Hi Chrissie
Sorry that this happened to you!
Thanks for the link to report anything like that - I've made a note of that - but hope to never need it.
Wishing you an uneventful rest of the day and all success!
Sharlee (Chocolate IceCream)

Thank you so much Sharlee :)

I had an idiot of a roommate who got into the naughty websites when I was at work. I absolutely do not condone stuff like this and came home one day and found all kinds of hate mail in my inbox! It was horrible. People were saying they were going to find me because I apparently sent pornographic rubbish to their kids, and other things. I went into my sent folder and found thousands (THOUSANDS!) of these pieces of rubbish sent all over the creation!

At the time, I had AOL (Aim) and I made my roommate write up an apology letter explaining what happened, what he had done and that this would never happen again. Of course, I checked up on his work and he did all of it.

He gave my account details to someone who said he needed it before he could gain access to some stupid dice game.

Sounds like what you got was binary options, which I'd stay away from. I know you wouldn't get tangled up in stuff like that. I had one of my Gmail accounts compromised but it wasn't serious. Google has steps you can take whether or whether not your account got hacked, to prevent losses. I'd do it before you completely lose control of the account.

Okay, reading below, I see you've already done this.

That sounds really horrible Daniel, far worse than what has happened to me.
I hope it never happens again to you.
Good luck
Chrissie :)

Nope, that roommate is long, long gone. I don't hang around anybody that would visit such websites anymore. Also, I don't open strange emails, let alone click links inside them.

That happened 16 years ago and never had an incident like that again.

thanks for the heads up.
Jerry

You are welcome Jerry :)

Ouch, that must have been a blow below the belt.

Indeed, but I've changed my password now, so hope it will be OK! :)

That's good. Being hacked is something which haunts every one working in this sort of line.

Just change your password Chrissie.......no need to close the account unless you were planning on it anyway.

Wayne

Thanks Wayne. I have done that now, and I have also created another account!! :)

About 8 years ago, my Hotmail was hacked. I woke up to 1500 emails. Found that each was a delivery failed notification for emails that I supposedly sent.
Someone had gotten in and was using my email account to send spam.
Contacting Hotmail and was told my account had ben suspended due to suspicious activity. I could not get back in to retrieve saved emails or contact list.

People ask me why I have 4 email accounts, that's why.

Have a great day.

Thats not funny is it? Weirdly, I just checked the sent box on the account, and the one I received was not there!! I wonder if that was because I had contacted Gmail, or some other reason.
So sorry to hear about your experience Actually, my hotmail account was hacked about the same time as yours, and I kept getting messages from my contacts asking me not to send spam emails! So I sent a message to all of them telling them what had happened!!
The best of luck :)
