Branding - What's In A Name?

Hi Everyone

We hear a good deal about the importance of building our brands, which also entails having a brandable name.

But is this always the case?

This morning I was listening to a BBC radio program which advises on all things to do with finance.

The subject was the cost of housing, and a few experts were giving their point of view on the Property Market. They were all Estate Agents - I believe they are called Realtors in the US, is that right?

One of these firms was called "Dolittle and Dally".

Really!?!

Would you really trust a firm by that name to buy or sell your house?

But they are obviously a reputable firm, or they wouldn't have been asked to give their expert opinion on National Radio.

I must state that personally I know nothing whatsoever about that firm - they are not in my area and I have never had any dealings with them, and I am definitely not trying to slur their name in any way.

But I would think that with that name they must have had an uphill struggle to establish their reputation, which they now obviously have.

What do you think?

Could that be a way of "Reverse" branding?

After all, when you choose someone to be responsible for selling your house, you really do not want them to "do little and dally", do you?

But they are obviously successful.

So what do you think?

Would you choose a similar name which appears to say the opposite of what you want to convey, and do you think it would work for you?

I was just intrigued by this rather strange phenomenon, which certainly did take me aback when I first heard it.

I would be really interested in your thoughts on this, if you would be kind enough to leave them.

Very many thanks for reading this, and I wish you all a great, positive and productive weekend:)

I guess your abilities matter more. Sure the name can make it easier. Especially if it is easy to remember.

True Eric :)

A provocative piece.

:)

What's in a name after all? It's your abilities that matter...

James

Very true James :)

There's a tavern in the town Chrissie. The Dewdrop Inn!

I like it Michael :)

We have one inn our area peez, Fauty, and Dropson Doctor's office

Ha ha, you have to be joking!! :)

Thanks for sharing, Chrissie.

Welcome :)

I found their website. Doolittle and Daley is a real estate company that has been around since 1893. 120 years. They are very proud of that fact.

They present themselves as a very serious, professional and reputable estate agency.

There was no humor on their website.

They really should use humour don't you think Sondra?

The origional founders probably had an amazing sense of humor.

The extreme professionalism may be their way of overcoming negative connotations associated with the name.

This has been an interesting topic to think about. I'm glad you posted it.

Many thanks for all your comments Sondra:)

Well, their name is certainly memorable and it gets people talking about it. It is kind of funny too.

I am a real estate agent in the US. In the real estate world, one of the biggest challenges is having people remember your name when it is time to buy or sell a home.

My guess is that they combine that memorable name with amazing service. The latter is more important than the name.

I am very tempted to Google them to see the "twist" that they use on their name in their marketing.

Very good points Sondra, thank you :)

Love your examples Craig, but as you say, you would remember them! :)

That's a brilliant name! Ha ha.
It does, perhaps, give the wrong impression, but you have to admit that you will remember them.
Hmm.
But would you go to a Dr Mal Praktiss? Or a dentist named Dr Yankem? Or an accountant named M. Bezzle? Lol

Wow...you came up with some great examples. How creative.
