Are WA hosted sites likely to be impacted by PayPal's security updates planned for June 2016?

I'm thinking specifically about sites that use PayPal to collect subscripti

Mr Chris so am just a beginner so hw can I start level1
So there was a little bit of misunderstanding becouse am trying to watch the video and it doesn't load so help me I really want to progress Sir

Thank you Marion for making it understandable to me...

Marion Black Got this one.

For starters wealthyaffiliate.com is not a WordPress site and so they're not using WordPress plugins. However this change at PayPal could affect WA members who have paid membership sites. A link in the Paid Membership Pro's article to the PayPal announcement would have been helpful.

And WA members, like me, who pay their WA membership via PayPal.

I'm paying my WA membership via paypal. Am I gonna have a problem later?

Thank you for putting this out there Chris. I had no idea about this.

TLS is Transport Layer Security previously called Secure Socet Layer (SSL) and it is encryption used by most websites like Google etc.

As far as I understand PayPal will update to version 1.2 in June and this will require that all sites using PayPal must also be upgraded to this level using HTML/1.1. Also WordPress needs to be updated to this encryption version.

If these upgrades are not done any payment mede with PayPal after June 17 will fail.due to incompatibility between encryption versions.

I hope this helps.

Excellent answer.

I knew about SSL, but had not mentally connected it to TLS.

Since WA uses "https://" that tells me it has SSL already, so I'm assuming the upgrade to TLS will be automatic (or as near as).

I assume WordPress updates will automatically do likewise with HTML, but I'm slightly confused with where HTML5 fits with HTML/1.1.

The only references I can find to HTML/1.1 is XHTML. Did the world "shortcode" both to XML or am I totally off track?

Hi Chris thank you for this update and I do use PayPal!
They usually tell you of these updates, but I have not heard or I missed it.
Have a blessed day,
Linda :)

I too use PayPal, and I'd never heard of this anywhere until I read the FAQ for the plugin.

I have no idea what these numbers mean but this sound like a new news isn't it..

Like you, I have no idea of what the numbers mean. I'm not even sure that I've posted the question in the right classroom.

No doubt I'll find the answers to both, pdq.

i bet you are right on that! Thanks for getting back anyways.

At the top of every WA page is a Facebook "Like" button.

You click it, and have to jump through a few hoops, but eventually you get a Facebook comment box to fill in. You

I just tried and it didn't work for me either.

Not yet encountered that problem, wish I could help, Chris.

I've never tried it.

Hi Chris, sorry you are having a time with the Facebook button. I have used the Facebook button and I don't remember it ever taking me to my timeline.

I haven't used the Facebook like button at WA, but I know that if I want to like something on a website, sometimes it will only allow me to like from my personal profile, not my business page! Also sometimes I need to refresh my page as Facebook doesn't know if I am liking from my personal profile or business page, could this be the problem Chris?

You know, I have used the facebook button and I don't remember it taking me to my timeline!

I really have no idea! What we can do is pose this question to the community...

Where did it go?

Seems Facebook likes to pick and choose what goes on your timeline and when. Kinda a drag if you ask me :(

I have a fully operational site here, with a dot com name.
I have bought another domain name that I prefer.
How do I point the new domain name at my existing WA site?

You need a re-direct on all post and pages on your original site. Copy all your content to the new domain after you turn off the SEO plugin on the original. There's probably a plugin for the re-direct... I usually visit http://wordpress.org to find plugins. ~Marion

Hi Marion,

I was hoping to do it the other way round. I did something similar several years ago but can't remember the details of how I did it.

As near as I recall I did something akin to a 301 redirect on the new name at the registrar end, so that the new name redirected to my existing site.

A bit like what WA does to our SiteRubix domain name when we do a "Move" - the SiteRubix name remains, and anyone who goes there lands on the new site instead.

If the new name is better than the old one wouldn't you want to use the new name moving forward?

That's exactly what I want to do.

The new name needs to go to where the site actually is, but the site must remain accessible under the old name because it already has customers and history and ranking.

As I said, I have done this before. The situation then was that a third party owned the "old" site so I had no access to it. I just bought my own URL and pointed it there, so it looked like I owned the site.

So if you move all the content (posts, pages and comments) to the new site (Tools==> Export/Import) then delete the guts from the posts and pages (leave the titles) on the old site and put a redirect on all of them you should accomplish your goal.

As I said, I could not do that with the site I didn't own. It was just a couple of mouse clicks to send my URL to their site.

I think I've found it now. It's called "Domain Forwarding" and works exactly like email forwarding

https://www.123-reg.co.uk/support/answers/Video/Domains/how-do-i-point-my-123-reg-domain-name-to-my-3rd-party-website-3874/

Sweeeet! I knew you'd figure it out for yourself. I still don't understand why you want to do it :/

But it was such hard work. It's like Homer Simpson said "Every time I learn something new, something old falls out of my head".

In the site manager, under your existing website, there is a "move" tool.http://screencast.com/t/9UnyrJv0I

Hi Kathy,

It's not like you to miss the wrinkle. I have a fully developed site already. I don't have a site to move. I just want to change its name.

Lol, sorry Chris! My excuse, I was up too early ;) I still think you can do it with the move tool after you've pointed your name servers to WA.

Not sure where you bought your domain name, there's training here for the more well known ones. this is the one for Namecheap. Oh, and I should add, support can also help with this. https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/websites/support

The problem there is that pointing the nameserver of newname.com to WA will just create a second site. The site will be called newname.com and will sit alongside existingsite.com instead of pointing to existingsite.com

I've seen the question asked before (although I haven't done it). Once you've pointed the domain here, it doesn't automatically create a new site till you create it through the add a new site.
Instead of creating newname.com site, you use the "move" button which takes care of redirects etc.
As I said, support can also help with this. :)

If I do this, when I hit "Move", won't that replace http://existingsite.com/ with a blank site and trash my work?

You're moving your actual site to a new domain, that is my understanding. What Carson said in response to this same question (can't find it now) was to contact support and they'll keep you right. They are very quick to respond too.

Let me know how you get ion, would be good to get it clarified. :)

Yes, I guess it is a support issue. I need to keep the existing site intact and accessible to existing customers, but new customers will come in via the new name.

It really bugs me that I've done this before, and it was absolutely effortless. But that's probably why I didn't bother writing myself any instructions for the future..

I understand, I forget if its a while since I've done something! Let me know how you get on. :)

I think we can stop the drivel about "max 5" now guys. Cutting from an article in

I use as many as I need to do the job I need done.

The perfect answer.

Holy Smokes !!!
... I would still be careful, and always make sure whatever plugin I use is being updated frequently. Outdated plugins cause a lot of trouble.

Well, some plugins can even speed up your website, as I showed in my training.

I totally agree, but it seems that few here want to know about useful and productive stuff. They'd rather peddle disaster scenarios and "I can't" or "not possible".

Question do you need 81 plugins to accomplish what you need or want to accomplish?

Pass. The guys are experts in their field, so it's beyond my ability to call them into question. My point, in bringing the article to attention, is that for us to portray ourselves as WordPress pundits is a bit silly.

I've never even tried more than about 20something plugins let alone have them all run on the same website at the same time. You'd need to be an expert plugin developer to even attempt something like that. ~Marion

When I had 6 I was already in trouble but your question cracked me up.....and like the others here I would say it depends on lots of things including how up to date they are and what's going on with the plugins on your browser and things like that....
Warmly,
Avera

You'd be getting 6 updates a day i suspect.

I now do 5 ;=)
No problem with them...leaves time and energy to agonize about everything else lol!!

It depends on the plug ins and the servers ability to keep up with the load on their system. I would stick to as few as possible. Limiting plug ins also limits the chance of infected ones causing havoc.
I would be interested in why anyone would need 81 plug ins, lol

The answer is in the article.

There is no link to the article. I would love to read it

Sorry, it fell off the screenshot. I had to go back through my browser history to find it. It's in the question now.

Thanks!

The more moving parts 'bits of code' that have to interact the more problems you can face, it's not just the plugins on the wordpress sites but the plugins each individual runs on their chosen browser also.
I have the odd problem where I have to open in a different brand of browser to get some sites working properly.
Flash isn't dead (yet), many sites have not implemented html5 and that in itself will introduce new problems no doubt.
It's all fun though!! = )

The bit that sends shivers down my spine is the odd time when you get weird behavior and you have to turn all plugins off, then back on - one by one.

How long will that take, if you've got 80 of them?

There'll be a plugin for that no doubt ; )

Just because you can run 81 does not mean you should, yes there is site performance to think of but each plugin adds another potential security hole that in some cases are quite easy to exploit. So just a word of caution no matter if you use 5 or 50 plugins, make sure they are up to date and you know the possible risks. Just my 2 cents.

Yep, that's exactly what the article said.

I always wondered why it said that you can only have five but they tell you to download six to start?

In my profile, under "Stats", is a slider called "Credits".

There are some scattered trainings on this topic, eg

that was a good question I was a bit confused by the credit things but I am A bit clearer now

I don't really have anything to contribute here Chris - just though I'd write and thank you for posting the URL for the website feedback page here at WA (the last link you posted). For some reason, there is no 'Star' available for an internal bookmark, and I'd lost track of it.

Dennis

See! What goes around ...! It just came back to you. Thanks for the thought.

You are talking about three different things. Credit for training you have created, credits for new referral and credits for website feedback.

Which one are you talking about?

Are they all measured in different places? Which places? What does the slider measure?

Which slider? The one in your WA Affiliate Program under stats?

That's the one.

I believe it's still relevant.

The reason I asked is that I was following the training, did a couple of the things mentioned, but there's no change in my slider.

One of the posts I listed in my question implied that they were to be killed off.

The one on the stats with the slider is for referrals who have signed up and completed their accounts, like adding a profile picture and a bit of a story

OK, I can see that now. Apparently I need to differentiate between different types of credit. So do you know anything about "feedback credits" eg https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/website-feedback

You can give yourself up to give feedback on websites of others and then you earn credits for that, that earned credits you can use to ask feedback for your own website.

just to add to Loe's comment. you get 1 credit for reviewing another affiliates website, it takes 2 credits to get yours reviewed. So if you wanted 10 reviews on your site then you would need to earn 20 credits. The "Pay it forward model"
