As it's Hogmanay here in Scotland today I thought I would share somethings Scottish, both funny and serious.

Firstly here is the origin of Hogmanay.

The First Foot is one of the biggest New Year Traditions in Scotland.

Here is an image from either a book or from one of the Scottish Newpapers - It is a Scottish Family named the Broons.

Next is the Scottish Alphabet.

Have fun learning these lol.

Here are some Scottish Phrases.

How many of these did you know lol.

I have added this next one for any Scottish People who are living elsewhere and maybe feeling homesick.

Here are a couple of Scottish New Year Toasts.

Finally a

Poem.

Here's to a great 2018 for all of us at

Cheryl, I love it and actually made Haggis for my bride last year. She did not enjoy so i pulled that one out of the recipe book. Thanks for sharing and success in 2018. Jay

Thanks Jay and that was a real shame that your bride didn't like it but I do have to say that it's an acquired taste. I love tatties, haggis and neeps, one of my favourite scottish meals.

You are welcome Jay and success for you too in 2018. xxx

Darn!! I was going to do a post on all those Scottie sayings, Nae be a time waster!

Oh believe me Mike there are lots and lots more and probably a few that are more interesting but maybe not printable lol.

Definitely canny be a time waster when the crazy Scottie Hottie's about lol. You'll just have to learn them instead.

Happy New Year to you and your family Mike when it arrives. xxx

How about the Federation ones Mike? I am listening.... :))

Not sure that there is any Scottish Federation words lol. xxx

Mike is just writing this list as we speak.. :))

You will be amazed!!! :D

You think so Stefan, I'll wait and see lol. xxx

Wealthy Chocolate Year 2018! Cheryl, I needed that info above to rename Scotland into..... surprise :D

You are welcome Stefan and definitely a Wealthy Chocolate year for 2018.

What I want to know though is what are you going to rename Scotland as lol. xxx

The secret will be revealed soon... Countdown... :)

Ooooh will I have enough fingers and toes to countdown or will I need the help of maybe Patsy or even Vera as well do you think?

All excited to find out, better be a good one though lol. xxx

How many chocolates are you willing to give?

Now there's an idea Stefan I could use all the chocolates I have to countdown when I run out of fingers and toes and you can have as many as you want except for my coffee creams, you ain't getting any of them lol. xxx

Good thank you for all your chocolates. Now that raises the question, you will eat coffee creams then I suppose. :P The mystery remains of course... lol :))

You are welcome Stefan and off course I will let you figure out the mystery but yes I will eat all the coffee creams all by myself lol. xxx

Happy New Year! Thanks for the post. I"ll be visiting Scotland for the first time in July 2018. I'm going to bookmark your handy Scotland vocabulary lists. It will give me a head start on understanding the lingo.

Happy New Year to you too Wendy and you are very welcome. Where about in Scotland are you visiting?

I am sure that the Scottish alphabet and phrases will come in handy lol. xxxx

I'm landing in Edinburgh and plan to roam around that city for a couple of days. I have friends in Dundee that I might visit, and then I have to plan excursions for a day or two that are relatively close to Edinburgh. I'm not up to renting a car and driving on the other side of the road. It's public transportation for me. Recommendations are welcome.

Are you coming to Scotland on your own or with family Wendy? I live 12 miles outside Edinburgh in a place called Penicuik.

I wouldn't blame you for not wanting to drive, I wouldn't either if I was in a foreign country. xxx

It's a two country trip. I'm doing France with a group. Then practicing my solo travel skills in Scotland. I picked Scotland because I know the natives are easy going and friendly. A place that speaks English helps. ;-)

So when do you arrive in Edinburgh then Wendy? xxxx

If all goes according to plan - July 28th.

I love listening to Scots talk, more than listening to my Irish friends. Here's to ye, aye!

Here's to ye as well Dean.

I hope you can understand us Scots when we are talking lol.

Happy New Year to ye and yer family when it comes. xxxx

At first it was a little tough, but the more I listen it gets easier. I just think it's a fun dialect and most Scots upbeat and fun loving.

I can imagine it would be a struggle to start with Dean as we tend to speak quickly as well as using words that other people would have no chance of understanding lol.

Yes, us Scots are upbeat, fun loving and a little bit crazy too lol. xxx

Lo I love the Broons and Oor Wulliel! A guid new year tae ye from a fellow Scot :)

I love reading the Broons and Oor Wullie and being named Brown, we do get people calling us the Broons lol.

Where about in Scotland are you SJ?

A gid New Year tae ye when it arrives and have a great night. xxx

Lol We used to live next door to a family called
the Broons when I was a kid. The husband
was the double of Granpaw Broon complete with
the bunnet and bushy beard :) :)

I'm in Edinburgh where abouts are you? x

Very entertaining. Happy New Year, Cheryl.
Debbie

Hi Debbie, hope you are well.

Thanks and Happy New Year to you as well when it comes.

Here's to a great 2018 for us both here at WA. xxx

Thanks, Scotland is a lovely place.

You are welcome Alex and I take it that you have visited or stayed in Scotland at some point.

It is a lovely place and the scenery in Scotland is beautiful. The only thing we don't have going for us is the weather lol. xxx

In 1985 I was working on a seismic boat and we crossed the Atlantic to the UK, spent a week in Wales for repairs to the engine before going up the West coast of Ireland and Scotland. Stopped briefly to search for wreckage from the Air India Crash of June of that year then onward to the North Atlantic.
We worked there for 2 months with one day resupply in Stornaway. Once finished I flew to Glasgow and rented a car. I drove around from Glasgow to Loch Ness, Inverness, Perth and then Edinburgh. Onward to London for a few days then return to Canada. I was young and had the time and money. It was a great time and I enjoyed it very much.

I'll have to keep that definitions sheet handy for the next time I'm with my UK teammates at Awin.co.uk. Sometimes it's a bit tough to know what they're talking about! Happy New Year!

Hi Jeannine, It will most certainly come in handy lol, at least now you will understand more of what they are saying when you meet.

Happy New Year to you and your family when it arrives. xxx
