As I work on the checkouts for a local supermarket, I know how important it is to have very good customer care.

We always need to make sure that we interact with our customers and make their visit to the store a memorable experience so that they will want to come back.

As a lot of people here already know, I do like to joke with people and I do tend to also joke with some of my customers (obviously not being rude) and find that there are a lot or people who become regulars coming through my till time and time again.

One thing we do have to watch for is that any one of these customers could be what we refer to as the mystery shopper and we are marked out of 10 for interaction with them. There are a few things that I tend to do without even thinking about doing them, they just come naturally to me as I have been in the job for so long.

I came across this one quote today which I really think is appropriate to both my job outwith WA as well as for members within WA too.


I think that the wording on this says it all.

I like jokes, they make us smile and can give us a lighter day. It should be a part of our daily life to be happy always.

Thank you Jimmy and it is true. Life for people can be very serious with different things happening in their lives so I always think that if you can share a joke and make someone laugh for just 5 mins in their day it can make all the difference to them.

I have shared both happy and sad stories with people at the till and was once complimented from another member of staff for being genuine which I have to say I always will be. xxx

Truer words were never spoken, as I can attest to this, I have an Auto Repair Shop in Cape Town South Africa, and have always been hands on with interacting with my customers,

60% of my customer base is recommendations, this says a lot for positive customer relations,

I have older customer's grandchildren as new customers, this tells me I have been doing something right all these years,

If this trend can be applied to my online business, I certainly will as it has proven to be effective, and it comes naturally to me.

You and I are very alike there then Gary. I used to work as a PA before the job I am in just now so still had to work with the public as well as committee members so have always been involved in working with other people whether they are members of staff or members of the public.

Exactly Mickey and if you do it properly then you will certainly win the trust of your customer and hopefully you will encourage them to return regularly.

There is nothing worse than bad customer care. I know that I hate going through a checkout or a phone call and you get the impression that the person has no interest or does not care about what they are doing.

It costs nothing to be courteous. xx

The automated checkouts at the store I work in have a member of staff standing beside them to help if anyone needs it. Just as well as the woman in they checkouts is a very nippy person and gives you a row if you are too slow.

They are very sensitive too unfortunately, you just need to breathe on them or look at them the wrong way and it says you are an unexpected item lol.

Incredibly important indeed. I work at a truck rental place 2 days a week and I give my best with everybody. They appear to enjoy the service and we often get really good reviews on the business website. We aim at 5 stars. Thanks for the post. alpacaproductsnservices.com

It really is important Nicole, if you give good service whether it is in a store or even over the phone you are more likely to get people coming back to you. It is really nice to get good reviews and word of mouth is as good as any as it is not everyone who has access to or uses the internet and rely on word of mouth.

I say time and time again that it costs absolutely nothing to be polite and courteous to people.
