I recently came across an article telling us that we should be quitting using Social Media. The article came from a guy named Jaron Lanier. He is a visionary from Silicon Valley and claims that the Social Media companies have turned inhumane, cruel, dangerous and unethical.

Because of this, he has created a list of ten reasons as to why he reckons we should all quit Social Media. Listed below are the 10 reasons why he thinks we should stop using Social Media. Do you agree with him or what are your thoughts.

  1. We Are Losing Free Will - Our smartphones are enabling us to be tracked and measured as well as being able to receive feedback which has been engineered, they are gorging on data about us all the time, such as what types of links we click on, what videos we watch down to who we connect with. Jaron reckons that what was once advertising is now being understood as behaviour modification which is on a Titanic scale.
  2. Stopping Is The Most Targetted Way To Resist The Insanity Of Our Times - Even though we are all carrying round our devices which are good for mass behaviour change or the fact that we all get crammed into online ambiances which bring out our worst side or even that the power is so fierce, meaning that Facebook and Google are controlling giant 'cloud' computers is not being seen as the problem, the problem is more to to do with the fact that the phenomena are being driven by a business model incentivised which is being used to change anothers behaviour. Were you aware that our feeds are constantly being adjusted to change behaviour. It appears that because social media increases negative emotions rather than postive, it is more likely to harm rather than improve society.
  3. It Is Turning Us Into A**holes - according to Jaron, the world of social media is where the ordinary people like you and I come together at a place where attention is the key or the only reward and that users like us are only able to gain wealth and power which is fake rather than real. It therefore lets us see that this insecurity is lacing the whole of the social media machine.
  4. It Is Undermining the Truth - It is being said by Jaron that whenever people become fake, then so does everything else. Although we may believe that we have never dealt with a fake person online, it is very likely that we all have at some point in our lives. We have all more than likely bought something because the reviews for it were great or you watched a video because others had done so but they have been fake. Steering the world out there is armies of people who are fake as well as tweet bots. In fact, in order to adjust our behaviour plus change our opinions, there is a whole industry out there who are selling counterfeit humans.
  5. It is Making What We Say Meaningless - Based on what's seen or what seems obvious, social media mixes up what we mean, so that anything we say online will be closely examined and given a totally different meaning after it has been macerated by the fake people, crowds and sets of computer instructions. Therefore, if you plan to say something that you wish to survive, in brief and an unpredictable setting, you have to be crazy.
  6. Our Capacity For Empathy Is Being Destroyed - Jaron reckons that the online world we know is hidden to people who are unable to understand us and likewise.
  7. We Are All Being Made Unhappy - When we use social media, we put ourselves and others into silly situations that we don't need such as why we don't have the same amount of photos that are cool like our friends, we are not followed as much as others, and because of this we are suffering from social phobia regularly and the thought of getting left behind scares us enough that we need to stay. We are therefore just playing us all off against each other and resulting in the fact that most of us lose.
  8. It Does Not Want Us To Have Economic Dignity - In a nutshell, the main business plan of the social media firms is to gather all your information and then gather some income from it. You only have to see how wealthy Google and Facebook are and they achieved this just by using the data that we provide for them.
  9. Politics Are Being Made Impossible - Because firms such as Facebook or Google don't fall under the banner of either liberal or conservative, instead they tend to fit into the pro-paranoia and pro-irritability umbrella, the only politicians, causes or parties who remain on social media are the ones who decide to pay.
  10. It Hates Our Souls - When you make the decision to use social media, you are essentially taking on a metaphysical framework as well as noting that you don't have as much free will. By using both Facebook and Google you are giving them your support regardless of the fact that you know all about their irrational motives. We are also allowing them to be able to undermine the truth. Therefore, because the spiritual anxiety has profound consequences, Jaron Lanier is telling us all to

(Lanier. 2018)

There you are then everyone, bearing in mind that we are encouraged to use social media for our sites, do you agree with what Jaron Lanier is saying here or do you think that what he is saying is a lot of nonsense.

I hope you weren't too bored while reading this lol.

I found this inspirational quote and thought I would share it with you, hope you like it.

Have a nice morning, afternoon or evening whatever it may be beside you.

Well, certainly a complicated issue...I don't disagree with anything he said..but...there are always two sides to the story and he completely missed the other side. Social media does keep people connected and does help people earn an income. We have to learn how to use social media effectively and safely.
The only thing I totally agree with is you inspirational quote! Lol

I agree with many of these points, which is why I generally stay away from it for personal use. I wish it wasn't a necessary evil to promote our businesses but that seems to be the case. Which reminds me, I'm behind on doing this. Thanks for the reminder, Cheryl.

I think each of those statements/reasons should serve as a warning to not fall into those traps. To be mindful of our actions while using social media. Most of all, understand the human component, and be there for one another.

I love Jaron Lanier and, likely, he is a voice crying in the wilderness. He does provide a perspective that comes from being one of the guys who helped make the whole Internet thing a reality and he does not like the direction it seems to be taking us humans.

I agree with many of his conclusions, but I'm not sure about his advice. It all comes down to choices, always. It's kinda like the "just-say-no" approach to birth control. It works...sorta.

I think the poor man should just get out of California and he will find out that the end has not yet come.

Many of those, however, valid reasons to leave social media if you cannot control yourself.

Thank you for sharing.

I make it a point to avoid too many opinions. Never heard of the guy you mention so this to me is like spreading a false belief. People are unhappy because they refuse to listen to their own emotions and to fix the issues that reside inside of themselves. :-)

I simply use it for business because I have found that for personal use it has gotten ridiculous with many of the false commitments, mainly FB. I never used any other platform socially.

Tried and True

Elaine

There are companies now and in the past who have wanted and tried to modify societies behavior but none as large as today.
Jerry

I really agree with it all!
I rarely, get on FB, for most of the above reasons.
I'm not sure, what I'll, read or see, that, I have NO desire to know!
Best thing, for me...The private messages, from real, friends, who are also, part of my phone connections.
Good, post, Cheryl. I've thought about my feelings about FB, and the necessity of it being a part of my website.
Barb

I gave up on social media socially a long time ago. Now the only time I use it is for business purposes.
