The Ceddiced Chronicles

I've been a member of Wealthy Affiliate now for a few weeks and decided it was time to create my blog. I became a Premier Member after just a few days. I've got my niche chosen and my website up and running. Yeah, I'm working on content with relevant keywords. Everything is going pretty smoothly as far as learning and applying principles of developing an online business. But a success story is not what my first blog post will be about. What's on my mind is how two guys wasted my time two days in a row, and how it reminded me why I joined Wealthy Affiliate.

The Friday Job Search Blues

You see, I'm in the middle of a job search. This past Thursday, I scheduled an interview for 10AM Friday morning. I made it 30 minutes before 10am, driving about 20 miles. And guess what happened? The guy I was supposed to meet, let's call him Chuck, sent me a text: I 'm real busy with a client and I may have to re-schedule the interview.

Well, I was really pissed after driving 20 or 25 miles for an interview that might not happen, but I remained the eager yet pleasant job seeker outwardly . Chuck's secretary was sympathetic. "Chuck lives just past your side of town. " she said."Maybe you two could meet on the way to his area."

I mentioned this idea of meeting on my side of town on the cell to Chuck, but his reply was: "I'm pretty busy all day. I don't know how my day is going to end up. I'll get back to you." So I began the long drive home.Half way home, I received another text from Chuck:

I'll try to be back in the office by 11am. Can you meet me there?

Most people would have turned around, but I wasn't about to turn around. If I had been late for the interview, Chuck would have judged me harshly and probably withheld a job offer because if you're late for an interview, you might be late for work, right? I had demonstrated promptness, not tardiness. Earnestness, not a nonchalant attitude. But Chuck clearly valued his schedule, his time, and his gas more than mine. That told me what type of boss he might be: the kind I don't want to work for.

The Monday Job Search Blues

Similar situation Monday: an interview at a car dealership about 20 miles from my side of town. I've never sold cars, but the email I got acknowledged that they weren't looking for people with car sales experience, but for professionals with my kind of resume. There was an actual interview after filling out an interview "questionnaire" which required I repeat most of the basic info on my resume. The interviewer, let's call him Bill, just repeated his email with this added caveat:

"We'll be interviewing a bunch of guys, then choose 18 candidates for orientation," he told me." You may get a call being invited back to orientation. Thanks for coming in."

What the hell?! These people solicited me, not vice versa. Bill had me drive 20 miles to pre-qualify me for an orientation?! With today's technology, I could have filled out the "questionnaire" online. A phone interview conducted by someone properly trained to take interview notes (something Bill wasn't doing) could have pre-qualified me for the orientation. It was another angry drive back home fuming over how my time was yet again wasted, devalued by a potential employer.

Which Reminds Me

I could have been sending out resumes this Monday. I could have been on the Wealthy Affiliate website going through training for my own web based business. That's why I joined Wealthy Affiliate. And from the very beginning the information and training has been top notch - not another time wasting scam. What I'm learning is knowledge that's my ticket out of the rat race working and sweating for some guy or gal who only appreciates how much richer my talents and abilities will make him or her. Those two incidents, the interview that didn't happen and the fake interview, just reminded me of all the reasons I need to keep working on my own business.

What are some of your worst job interview experiences. Let me know.

Glad you're here. It will take a while to build up your online business but you certainly have the right attitude for it. You may not believe this but I actually enjoy job interviews, although I have not gone through the frustrations you note above. I trust your website will begin earning you the money you are looking for. WA is absolutely the right place to learn how to build a sustainable long term business. All the best to you.

I'll start screening those interview offers a bit more.
