Conversational Writing 101

Yesterday I published the 4th module of our WAchievement Wednesday Training Series, Conversational Writing 101 - It's All About Trust. The feedback from these trainings continues to be very encouraging and yesterday was even more so.

It has now passed Execution 101 to be the highest ranking module in the series, so far. Some comments and recent WA posts reminded me that the subject of writing is a core element in our online activities. It is also the area where many of us find the most challenges.

Conversational engagement with people you do not know and cannot see can be tricky. There are ways to get past that though and I want to share 3 with you.

1. Read A Variety Of Writing Styles

There are days when I am a ghost at Wealthy Affiliate. I am here but, not here. Not working on my own blog posts or websites either.

I am here as a ghost reading WA and website posts from our WA members. Just reading. No comments, no questions, no interaction. Simply savouring the words and establishing a relationship with them and their writer.

No, I am not crazy nor am I a stalker. Taking time to read and absorb the words gives you an opportunity to feel the true meaning, observe and hear what is not written and, gauge the writer's intent.

You are not void of writing styles at WA. If you are struggling to find your own, invest some time in studying others.

2. Change Places With Your Audience

Become your audience when you write. What do I mean by this? I mean, change places.

As you prepare to write, position your mind into the mind of your visitor. These questions may help you make that step:

  • What emotion do you want to evoke?
  • What is your audience's frame of mind?
  • Would they find what you are writing about appealing?
  • From what angle of the topic should you engage your audience?
  • Is your own mood in sync with the emotion you want to evoke?

Again, within WA, before I write a blog post, I always check in to the community first. I read through some of the day's posts, make a comment or 2, get a jist of what the mood of our community is.

That helps me to decide if I want to add a different dimension to the day's energy or keep on the train that exists. I do not jump in blindly.

3. Take Some Risks

When I began writing at WA, I was in hiding. You could tell from just looking at my profile photographs. I did not want anyone to "see" me.

In essence, I had very little trust - in myself because this was all new to me and the environment, because I did not know how I would be received and if I would fit in.

I recall this from Kyle in the OEC training, Level 1, Lesson 7:

"The most natural and the option that I have always used because I feel it resonates and creates the most trust is "About Me" or "About Kyle", because it is the most direct. It feels like I am here for you and I am here to help (which is the case with every site I create)."

I read those words every day for about a month! They are profound and provide both the ethos for WA and the purpose for our businesses online.

It was during that time I realised that I had to take some risks and start giving (of myself) to learn and grow.

My writing also started to change and I began to share things about myself. This created engagement and by network at WA began to widen. As my writing evolved, so do my credibility and the meaningfulness of my connections.

I started to "see" our WA members as being human and vulnerable, like me.

Engaging your audience rests directly in your lap. Like most things of importance, it takes time to do it well and consistently.

Once you find your voice however, there is no looking back.

Have a truly engaging day!

'On point, as per.'
When 'taking some risks' I think it's important not to judge yourself to harshly if the response isn't as you expected. There can be a variable that is unpredictable, even if your have gauged the 'vibe' correctly.
Be happy (and honest) that you have given it your best shot. Set your own standards.

Excellent point!
We tend to be our hardest critics, don't we?

So much of thus has to do with being kind to ourselves.

Thank you, Twack.

Yes we are and rightly so, the 'buck stops with us'.

"No one will expect more from us than we do of ourselves. This is not the 'norm' but the exception, in my opinion. This exception is reserved for the 'exceptional' and you have to believe that is to be true of yourself."

Cassi, this is so important and not stressed enough. It's a big challenge for me, I think my web articles are not engaging enough. From the very beginning I had no problem to share my thoughts with WA and be very open but on my website I am more stiff and tend to write in a too educational style. Maybe it's the focusing on keywords, number of words etc.
I know I have to learn good writing and I believe I will.
Thank you!
Lenka

Lenka, I hear you - loud and clear!

That was me in the beginning too.
Actually, I have pulled down most of my original website posts and am now re-writing them.

BIG difference, now that I am comfortable with "me".
I imagine that all my WA Supporters are in the audience when I write my website blog posts now. 🙂

You make a good point about keywords, etc.
I no longer focus on them as much.

Thank you for reading and sharing.

By giving of yourself in your writing, you also build excitement in your audience. The become excited to see what else you have to say which builds trust. You exhibit those qualities when you write here at WA. You always do a great job explaining the topic you are on.
Jerry

Very kind words, Jerry.
I really appreciate your support and encouragement.

Thankyou very much.
