Your Websites Just got Accelerated and More Secure!

Last Update: August 30, 2018

Hi Everyone,

Wow, what a summer we've had here at WA and I hope that you've enjoyed yourself! We've just experienced one of our most exciting summers in terms of forward movement of the WA platform, and I can't wait to deliver some truly groundbreaking updates to the WA platform this fall!

Today I want to tell you about some great new features we've just released!

SiteRubix Websites Welcome SSL!!

We have just released a major update to our website building experience at WA which makes all websites at WA for ALL members (Starter and Premium) more secure. Moving forward all websites built on our SiteRubix platform are secured with SSL Certificates. If you have a .siterubix.com site you can go and turn SSL ON!

We've always been big supporters of a secure Internet and we truly believe that we can get there. With our update today, all websites on our Wealthy Affiliate hosting platform can have SSL certificates and at no extra cost to you.

For anyone that may be wondering what SSL is, it stands for Secure Socket Layer and it's a layer of security that is added to your website which encrypts the communication from a browser to your website.

For example, if you're at Starbucks using WIFI and you login to your website, your browser sends your password to your site. If you have SSL turned ON, then that password is encrypted and no hacker or malicious software can intercept and capture your password.

This is a BIG Deal!

You can rest assured that with SSL turned on that data flowing from the browser to your website is secure. Your visitors can also rest easy entering data, and you can rest easy entering data to your site, because of this extra layer of security. This can drastically increase communication, engagement, and trust of your site.

Registered domains have had SSL at WA for some time now (read my initial post), but today SSL is available to everyone, including Starter members! Security is something that everyone deserves to have...now all members can operate SECURE websites at WA!

How to turn SSL on for your Website at WA?

First off, when you build a website at WA going forward we have SSL turned on by default!

If you do not have SSL turned on their websites it's crazy easy to do...and we suggest doing so now!

  1. Visit your SiteManager dashboard and click the "Details" button for the site that you want to turn SSL Security on for.

  2. Under the SitePlus+ Section you will see a toggle switch that you can click to turn SSL ON for...click it!

That's it.

Once you turn SSL on your site will be Secure, however you will want to visit your website and look for the green LOCK in your browser. If you do not see a lock, or you see a warning that there is insecure content on your site, then you'll want to fix that.

Below is a tutorial that discusses how to ensure all of your website content is SECURE. Most typically, you'll find that links to external websites that are not secure will cause a warning in the browser. You'll need to update those links following the above instructions.

Read the SSL Training Here

New members able to build their very first websites with SSL Security ON is something we're really excited about, we're pushing the Internet toward being 100% secure and can't wait for that to happen :)

Today isn't all about security though...let's talk SiteSpeed!

We've also released a big update to SiteSpeed (version 2.0) SiteSpeed is our proprietary, hardware enabled, and highly effective caching platform here at WA. WordPress websites are powerful, they are robust, they are widely supported and are the most popular type of website on the Internet. With that said, WordPress websites can be SLOW! All of that functionality you can add with Plugins and specialty Themes can slow down your site in a BIG WAY!

This is where our SiteSpeed platform comes into play, it speeds up your website drastically, making it BLAZING fast. Not only does this improve your visitor experience, it improves your rankings in Google, Bing, Yahoo and other search engines.

Introducing Accelerated & Extreme Speeds

SiteSpeed at WA has historically had one option....ON or OFF. As of today, you can still turn SiteSpeed ON and OFF, but also choose from two speeds.

Accelerated: SiteSpeed Accelerated provides a sophisticated, highly compatible, and ultra fast caching option to vastly increase the overall speed of websites. This is the default caching option providing speed improvements for cached pages up to 20x faster than normal loading.

Extreme: SiteSpeed Extreme uses the same technology as the SiteSpeed Accelerated, however we take the optimization one step further by combining and minifying JavaScript and CSS. Experience even bigger speed gains over Accelerated and achieve the highest Google PageSpeed Insight scores.

Our new default "Speed" is the Accelerated option which turns on SiteSpeed for your site, yet leaves the optimization, combining and minimizing of files off. This is the most compatible form of caching and it's BLAZING fast.

Extreme takes things to the next level if you want to squeeze out the most speed and highest Google PageSpeed insight scores. It works with most websites and we certainly suggest trying Extreme. If you have issue with Extreme, then choose Accelerated.

Turn SiteSpeed On for ALL your Sites!

Turning SiteSpeed on for a website happens with the click of a button.

  1. Visit your SiteManager Dashboard and click on the Details button for your site

  2. Under the SitePlus+ section you will see a toggle switch which you can turn ON. Once it's on, choose Accelerated or Extreme speed options.

For more on SiteSpeed you can read more here.

SiteSpeed is available to all Premium members, for any Starter members who may be reading this, upon upgrading to Premium, we will turn SiteSpeed on immediately for your sites.

Faster load times, Better rankings, and a Better overall experience for your website visitors. We've implemented technical innovations within SiteSpeed that are not being done, and cannot be done with "website performance" type plugins. We're pushing the boundaries of what is possible with this platform and have even more exciting updates we're working on to improve speed and compatibility in the future.

At the opening of this post I alluded that we've experienced the most productive summer months that we've had in company history. We are currently working on some of the biggest projects we've ever released and this fall you can expect great things from us here at WA...in other words, we're just getting started with the next wave of updates streaming into the Wealthy Affiliate platform :)

So now it's your turn! We want to hear from you.

Are all your WA hosted websites WA secured with SSL? Do you have SiteSpeed turned ON?

Leave your comments below.

I have a problem. Before accelerated and extreme, I used to get 93 and 83. I tried another theme for this scores and I don't use caching plugins etc. However I use wsmush

But after these (accelerated and extreme) were enabled, I get 83 and 70!

I want sitespeed but the old version which I got 93 and 83.

I submitted a ticket to site support. But they could not solve it yet.

Does anyone have any suggestion?

If you have a number of images for your pages/posts, consider reducing the file size of your images. I had blogs that had 5 or more images on some of my posts that were scoring low as well. I reduced the file sizes om the images and dramatically increased how fast my pages load. Use an image file reducer like this one: http://resizeimage.net/

Upload your images and then use lossy compression to reduce the file sizes significantly. Hope this helps.

I already did that for every image a long time ago. My images have little file size. This was not an issue before accelerated and extreme sitespeed.

When it was regular sitespeed; I had good scores just a couple of months ago.

Thank you for the answer and I am open to other suggestions : )

Correction. My site URL is:

www.vintageauthors.com

When I contacted my theme support at Xylus they responded:

We check it out your image URL is https://thebookcellar.siterubix.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/cropped-Adney-Theme-Image-1.jpg

can youplease replace the image URL into https://vintageauthors.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/cropped-Adney-Theme-Image-1.jpg.if still you facing error please upload image again.

I tried doing that a few times but it didn't work.

Firefox told me my site is not secure. Although it was functioning fine before I performed the above.

Maybe Carson can help.

Hi Tom,

First, go to [ Site ] Manager. At the bottom right of the entry for your new domain is a button: [ ≡ Details ]. Click it.

Under SitePlus+, turn OFF "SiteSSL (HTTPS)". After it has turned off, turn it back ON. Let us know if that corrects the problem with your theme's image.

Hi Carson,

Wow! You are phenomenal and doing phenomenal things with Wealthy Affiliate. I am truly impressed and soon to move all of my offsite WP blogs to your WA servers.

Looking forward with anticipation to your next-to-be-released innovations. Keep up the great enhancements. You are truly a blessing to all of us.

Thank you,
James

P.S. FYI -- My first site did not have SSL turned on when I moved it from SiteRubix. The first attempt gave an error. Turned it off and back on, and it's all good, now. However, SiteSpeed was set to Extreme. Thanks.

I may be new , but since private message and support seems to not be working for you , here's what i suggest from my own personal technical experience ..... I would turn it off and switch it on again , I myself have turned all switches on and i can still access my SiteRubix.com , and i am in pending process for my payment to go through , computers can be tricky , but just go through your steps again or just simply try what i said , if you are still having issues i would send a personal private message to either Kyle or Carson and get the support ,also there is all kinds of support on here , you could even possibly look around and find someone who has been on here for a long while they may have the answer your looking for , and if this dose not help you at all i'm terribly sorry and wish you the best of luck , this program takes patients :)

contrl+U on your site and check your code.

Don contrl+F for find and type in HTTP for the search box. Hit enter.

This will highlight all HTTP and HTTPS. The HTTP are insecure codes that you have to fix, usually it will be a plugin or theme or something similar. Site support will help you with that.

Great! One more reason to stay at WA :)

@Carson, I just have a question. I am not an expert but It sounds for me that SiteSpeed Extreme does the same as the plugging Autoptimize or kind of? am I correct? If I this is right, can I deactivate it if I already have SiteSpeed Extreme On?
Sorry if this a dumb question but I am not a tech person.

Thanks again @carson and @Kyle for always looking for ways to help us achieve our goals.

You can always deactivate any plugin on your site and reactivate it when you deem fit. The question is whether you can afford to deactivate it
Reply
Carson Premium
This is a great question and I’ll be happy to answer for you. There is no plug-in that exists that can do what SiteSpeed is capable of. The reason for this is because site speed is caching your content at the hardware level. There is no software running on your website in order for this to work. Other website speed engines that are available through plug-ins are software based. They can actually slow your website down by making it bloated, can cause many issues, and quite frankly rarely work well. SiteSpeed is the only platform that you need and we strongly suggest disabling all other “speed” plugins.

This is a KILLING addendum. I had my SiteRubix websites created months ago but due to the shortage of SSL facility, I've been building my websites on the purchased domains alone.

Time to have a peep on those forgotten domains though while celebrating this SUPRA advantage for members on the FREE Trial.

Just a question here. At some point are we going to see a built-in graphics compression feature like turning on EWWW Image Optimizer? It would be a great addition to remove the weight of adding yet another seemingly default plugin so we can add more functionality without adding to our 5 plugins recommended maximum.

It is entirely a myth that more plugins slow a site down. How you manage those plugins that count. You can, when you know how, set certain plugins to only load when you need them to - i.e on the pages that you need them to.

Example, I use Easy Azon for my niche site which only loads on review category pages. There is no extra load due to that plugin on my home page or other non review pages.

Graphics/images, you could enhance by loading from a cloud and loading them in parallel. Best doing that Via Cloudflare than EWWW, unfortunately cloudflare is not possible for WA hosted sites due to cloudflare requireing domain level control.

Speed up the delivery of your images you can us EWWW cloud and store your images there, just pass on your API key to site support.

About $9/month but have a look at your waterfall for your most popular pages and home page and you will be able to calculate how much faster your site could load and then figure out it the load time reduction is worth the $9/monthly.

Gonna depend on how image heavy your site is. Just my opinion, the average site not gonna justify the cost. Mine would load 300ms faster -1.2seconds instead of 1.5sec as far as I am concerned nah..not worth it. I am already running fast enough.

But, if I was over the 2second load time I'd justify it!

That's fantastic news! I have the standard Site Speed turned on.
I will be waiting a week or so to turn on the newer version, simply because I am going away for a week and don't need any issues when logging in via a slower connection.

Sounds like I should turn it on before I go, to improve my speed!

Looking forward to the improvements.

I have noticed that the site speed file (https://Mysite .com/sitespeed-js/5258974568f510bf1125487d51254f4.js )

Is 199.2KiB and can be deferred to reduce the blocking of the rendering of the page thus faster still. It should also have a "vary: accept-accept-encoding" header thus faster still.

This is according to GTmetrix what can be done to fix that?

(1.5sec loadspeed, real time, 600ms pingdom 95 page speed!)

If sitesupport can fix that, taking 98 maybe even 100 on page speed insights here!, the site speed file from WA is (apparently) causing 2 issues one of high importance, the other low importance.
Reply
Kewl Web Premium
Thank-you Derek. GTMetrix was the company that told me my issues are with the server or WordPress.

I understand you are just making suggestions to improve speed even further and your speed is probably better than mine but I really appreciate you adding some technical explanations to your comments which I can't do.

That's something sitesupport may listen to.

Site speed is an ongoing process it never ending or set and forget kinda thing.

I'm not being critical of WA as I dont know fully how the new sitespeed thing is working but Carsons post has raised more questions than answers.

Nothing said of HTML being minified (I suspect it is given I am fully minified) or Chronjobs running to keep the cache warm (if so at what refresh rate (time)?- something I brought up with site support last week.

Not to mention domain charding and parallelising the loading of the code CSS and JS?

In short there is a hell of a lot going on with the speed of which a site loads at and what can be done to improve it.

There is a whole industry around it call Website Performance Optimisation. Of which usually you have to pay an ongoing monthly fee of $100-$200 minimum yearly contract!.

I can tell you that what flicking that button and what it is doing you'd be paying some due around $100 a month to do and to maintain!

YA dont believe me? Go google WPBuffs and WPfaster see what they charge!

We getting it all included in our membership fee - makes pretty sweet deal!

Be quite frank I used to be one of the biggest critics of WA's hosting I can assure you that if your site is slow it is NOT down to WA's servers pretty fast. I get a look up time in the region of 200ms. (real organically tested (not pingdom - synthetic tool (as is GTMetrix). For what its worth I get 29ms-30ms look up time on Pingdom.

Usually, when a site is slow it does come down to front end problem and not the backend. Unless you are on a really shoddy shared or managed WP hosting that is overloaded. One of the ways to tell is your look up time.
Reply
Kewl Web Premium
Thank-you Derek. I appreciate you explaining things to me in a clear and concise fashion. Why can't SiteSupport do the same? It's beyond me.

I am getting a better understanding now. It's not my images, plugins or theme. So I'll have someone look at it for other issues on the frontend.

I did try the new system accelerated and extreme. Overall, there doesn't seem to be any difference. Many loading speeds for my urls are worse (especially for mobile) and others are slightly better (usually for desktop).

This is my truth - blazing fast it is not if the SiteSpeed scores are to be believed.

When I say speed I am not actually measuring the speed as you did above, I am going by SiteSpeed assigned scores and colours.

The reason I re-joined WA was to avoid all this technical stuff. What a nightmare it has turned out to be - again!

Anyway, thank-you. This is an answer I would have expected from Kyle or Carson. Much appreciated.

And it will be helpful for others stuck in the same situation.

Cheers,

Devan.

Hi Devan,

Google sitespeed is not a measurement at all of site speed it is a guideline for what they look for in a site (i.e minified code and so on).

GTMetrix, which I like btw, is a synthetic tool (as is Pingdom) they are not measuring your site speed organically. To do that check webpagetest.org and select it to run 9 tests 5mb cable connection and android/chrome/IOS browser you will get a more accurate indication of your speed as it gives you a median result of 9 tests run over different browsers and devices.

GTmetric I do like because you can see right away what needs fixing.

I am using the same server and host as you are and I'm getting between 200 and 300ms look up time (time to first byte) on Webpagetest.org.

Have you used EWWW plugin to compress your images? You can use the option to strip off the metadata of the images (size details and so on) all of that is unnecessary information that is really not required and weighs down your site. It wont, just for the record remove any affiliate links that you have behind those images.

I have my images compressed to 70%, smaller than wordpress standard 82% -no visual difference. Lossless compression.
Reply
derekmarshal Premium
Just to add, Although I don't like Pingdom so much due to being wildly inaccurate - you can usually add a whole second to what you get there. A lot of people use it, millions daily!. So the % figure i.e faster than 95% of websites tested is going to be pretty accurate.
Reply
Kewl Web Premium
Thanks. That's great information. I do use EWWW plugin and compress all of my images.

I will experiment with Webpagetest.

By the way, I contacted SiteSupport yesterday and they decided to look into my problem further.

They found a misconfiguration with my website. The issue involved SSL and SiteSpeed combined.

They were able to correct it by toggling SSL off and then back on again. All of my scores in SiteSpeed have improved greatly.

On another note, I appreciate all your information and I am going to follow up on what you have suggested above.

I am very grateful to support for taking me seriously and fixing my issue. I can now have confidence in the hosting again however I have still have lots to learn going forward!

Cheers,

I have had SiteSpeed issues ever since the last WA server crash. Support was of no help in the matter.

I have just checked four of my posts with SiteSpeed. One is slightly faster, 2 are worse and one has a slightly higher desktop score and lower mobile score.

So I am not fooled by the rhetoric. I will believe it when I see the results to back it up - that means scores for desktop and mobile for each post should be in the "green" zone if it is true and SiteSpeed is "blazing fast".

Not the yellow and red.

And please don't tell me it is my theme, plugins or images. I have been through that with support. It is not.

I think all the new implementations are having an adverse effect on some of our sites. I did receive an assessment from some experts that said it was either my server or WordPress.

Of course, support would not believe me originally with my suspicions.

Anyway, before the changes, there were no problems with my site speed.

And now it is not any better. Just to be clear I am talking about page loading times for each of my individual posts using the Site Speed tool.

SiteSpeed may be blazing fast for some but it certainly isn't for my website.

I also understand totally about SiteSupport. I have had a similar experience and other members have told me that too.

So cold and informal - in my 10 years online I have never come across a support team that doesn't use their names - amazing.

Even pseudonyms would be an improvement if they are worried about customer verbal abuse or privacy.

I hope you can find a solution.

Hi Lee,

We DO NOT have a mobile app coming out, by that I mean an app that one would download and install from The Apple App Store, or Google Play.

However....

We ARE going to be making WA mobile friendly very very soon. We're hard at work testing our first version of WA Mobile right now. This means that many of the most used areas in WA are going to work beautifully on Mobile devices and all screen sizes.

Thanks so much for SSL certificate, it's a very important feature to build trust with our audience. I've been using it for over a year now.

For SiteSpeed, I'm reluctant to use it. Every time I turned it on in the past, my site went down. I had to email the support team each time so they can put it back up.

They were not able to tell me why this happened so I stopped using it and everything got back to normal.

Is this a problem that has been fixed with this new SiteSpeed release?

Have to say the New Site Speed seems to have had a drastic negative effect on my Speeds.

I have been using site speed for ages so have most of my pages with site speed scores. Retesting after the new update shows a BIG drop in numbers. Especially in the Mobile Score (Mobile first!!!)

Can't say this is very pleasing? Let me know if you need any more detailed feedback! It is currently set to Extreme, and this was set by the update, I have made no changes to the settings.

If you toggle SiteSpeed on/off, or change settings you erase the "Cache", so you have to let the cache build up again. Hit a page once, then hit it again, you'll see the cached version load INSTANTLY. If you're getting any sort of traffic to your site, then it'll cache its self quickly :)

So the Auto Change over has wiped the cache? So if I visit a page a couple of times it should improve?

I had a few problems with my site going down yesterday, which I'm guessing is all to do with the new speed changes.

But having just checked the speed, it's at 99 for both mobile and desktop (the fastest it's ever been) and my posts are also in the 90s for speed.

Awesome, cheers Kyle & Carson!

I've also noticed some small jumps in rankings for a number of posts = BONUS.

How do you check the speed?

Hi Johathan, on your website details page below the SitePlus+ section you will see "PageSpeed Insights". You can check your pages there.

How exactly do you check the speed? Do you run the test twice? This seems what Carson is suggesting in replies to somebody above. But if this is so, your visitor will not click twice, only the first click is what counts, it shows the true speed and not cashed speed. So what am I missing here?

You show Optimization, so what is this exactly? What about Site Speed option which is next to it? In my tests it is always Unavailable. I asked Support several times and they do not answer such a simple question. See the screenshot.

Wa never seizes to amaze me!
Although I have had SSL for my domain, I am pleased I can create websites on SiteRubix and get one too!
I was devastated when my website said insecure, but now I can rest assured my traffic won’t be pushed away by that anymore!
Thank you!

Hey Timothy, totally. It's not every good to see "Insecure" warnings in a browser. Your traffic is going to see a trustworthy LOCK in their browsers going forward!

Things have been quite in Kyle and Carsons kitchen, looks like you have been cooking up a storm, adding SSL to the Site Rubix platform is massive, as members it will definitely extend our opportunities, and ramping up site speed, just adds more value.
Two more michellen stars for you and your team and opportunity plus for us thank you.

Hello Carson..It sounds really promising as I recently experienced low mobile speed because of JavaScript and CSS on some pages of my site and didn't know how to fix. HelpDesk told me to talk to the theme developer. But I had no luck with them.

When will this new Extreme SiteSpeed option start working?

I just checked Google PageSpeed tool and there no change for my mobile speed yet. It still shows an issue with JavaScript and CSS and it shows on the GTMetrix the same.

It still shows:"Eliminate render-blocking JavaScript and CSS in above-the-fold content"

Thank you for your help.
