Do I want my entire site and all my posts targeting ONE affiliate or would each post article target a specific (different) affiliate under the theme of the site? For example, w

Your site should always be about your niche, that is your target audience. Unless your product covers the entire niche and has lots of content, then it will look more like a product site.

That would be your choice. I’ve seen sites that do both: some stick with one affiliate and others have multiple. The key to making sales is relevance, so you don’t want to promote a bunch of things without managing the flow of relevance. Also, it takes quite a bit of content pointing at one offer to have consistent organic traffic and sales in many instances, so you don’t want to jump around between offers too much especially in the beginning.

Hi - well, first of all, not every post should have any selling intent. Some of them should be purely informational, with no affiliate links.

As regards the other posts, they can be reviews of different products, from different affiliate programs.

Since they don’t get into how money is actually made until after we choose a niche, I need some more info on choosing niches. Should our website be something general like

It’s really a personal preference. Niche sites (very narrow topic sites) rank easier because of their hyper relevance. Most people who choose a wider niche don’t focus enough on subtopics when starting out. It’s up to you whether you choose a niche site or authority site, but either way, it’s important to hyper target the content, then branch out once you’ve got something working.

You want to be more specific--if your niche is too broad, then it's likely to cause you problems with SEO and ranking high in Goggle--See Catherine's advice below, Robert!

Jeff

if you think of a niche as being a wall. You are looking for a sub- niche i.e. a brick in the wall. So as you say make-up as the wall and it's made up of lots of bricks such as make up for black skin, make up for teens, beauty products for men et cetera et cetera. So if you see you choose the area of beauty you could probably build the great Wall of China.

so I need to find the brick, not the wall? Or is the wall better because of all the options I would have for writing/promoting?

you just beat me to it I was coming back to edit my comment because I realised I hadn't spoken about how to build the wall. There are a lot of different theories about this but my proven theory in building over a hundred websites is this. I would choose a general generic name for the domain such as best make-up tips . I would then start with one break such as make up for teenage skins. I would complete that break and then move on to the next brick. The next brick could be make up for women over 50.

If you jump from brick to break and write general articles over the whole wall it is difficult for the site to rank this way because you are in Competition with sites that have a hundred articles about make-up for teens. They also have 150 articles about make up the older skin. You're never going to rank against these until you start getting big blocks of articles.

In conclusion start with one brick

Ok i'm a little more confused now but I want to understand you because it sounds like you know what you're doing.

Your first paragraph says the site is the wall and the focus topics/posts would be each brick. But then the next paragraph you say we will never rank because there are people that devote all their articles to my single "brick" topic?

i think I know what you're trying to say but i want to make sure. =) P.S. I appreciate you taking the time to help out.

I understand what Catherine is saying. If you really want to get "techy", it's called "SILOS" that she's referring to.

Basically, in your example, you mentioned beauty and makeup. If you look up a general search on "beauty blogs", you can probably find some heavy hitters, sites with large staff, several writers and editors, and loads of content. For a small site, it would be difficult to rank by trying to mimic their strategy of writing a bunch of informational posts and other content that's not tightly relevant to each other.

Instead, the way to outrank sites with lots of authority is to narrow your focus. Even if you decide to name the site broadly (to leave room for future growth), it's important to pick a narrower audience, focus on that one, build rankings and traffic, then move onto the next.

Hopefully I've helped you clear things up a bit.

Diane's advice is spot-on! Especially in this area. You want to give somebody a reason to focus in on your site. You can't be all things to everybody in that group. Your suggestion of focusing on teens is perfect!!! Let us know what you choose to go with.

Christine

Hi, don't be too generic, the competition will eat you for breakfast.

You are on the right track with makeup for teens example.

The Revlon Lipstick example might be a good review post within the teen make-up niche.
Hope this helps.

I'm a web and graphic designer and have been building sites for 10+years on Wordpress so without jumping ahead on the training, can someone tell me if I HAVE TO build and run m

It looks like Mel's answered your question on this. Like he said, you can use any server or hosting you wish. It's just a nice perk that you can register domains and host them here as well. If you decide the hosting here doesn't work for you, you can transfer your sites out like you would any other hosting service.

In addition to the training, you have access to the Online Entrepreneur Certification, live weekly training, 1-on-1 coaching (thru private message with me), 1000's of hours of recorded training, and a massive community of over 1 million online entrepreneurs at various stages. I was a digital marketing freelancer when I came here. Now, I've been here for 22 months and have learned a ton and made great connections. Hopefully, you enjoy it as much as I do.

If you have the expertise to build sites, you probably don't need the training. The WA community has a great deal to offer, but I don't know if, for you, it would provide anything new. You are free to use any server you want to use.

It's your business and you can host it anywhere you wish to.

I do host several sites on WA and the hosting more than pays me back in savings. I can see if you have your own server the advantages that would give to you.

You can still avail yourself of the WA Community and the training to move forward.

To Your Success!

Mel

Thank you. I am starting to see the benefit. i'm having a hard time because I like to know everything before i start and thats not how the training is set up here... haha

I can relate to wanting to know everything. :-)

The reality is also there is such an abundance of info to take in. The community is an excellent resource as well. New, weekly live training is informative.

I've been here for 9 months and don't regret it.

To Your Success!
