How To Give Good Feedback

I know I'm not the most experienced WA member here,.

In fact, I'm still in my infancy, but I thought I could help contribute to this topic, because of how well it has been going for me!

Site Feedback and Site comments are awesome

But the 2 are clearly different and some people (even myself in the beginning) confuse the 2.

Site Comments are for the article, and you can really help the article by:

  • Using the keywords mentioned in the article
  • Giving your personal opinion or experience about the post
  • Complimenting or thanking the writer but also ask a question!

Site Feedback in my eyes is where the compliments end.

Site feedback is usually general feedback about the website.

You can request specific feedback on your content, themes, etc. but I usually just ask for general feedback because then you get it all! (Most of the time)

However there are some people who only give compliments and positive feedback which is GREAT! but it does not help to improve the person or website!

And we ALL can improve ourselves and our websites!

One member a week or two ago gave me some feedback that hurt my ego initially but it was the most helpful feedback I GOT!

The member's only positive comment out of the whole feedback comment was at the end of the comment. He said "you have a good foundation to build on".

Other than that he told me he noticed my site to be very disorganized, rushed and lots of spelling and grammar errors and it would be helpful if I had someone revise and edit my work...(The member is from NZ so maybe that's why he thought my grammar and spelling was off)

BUT regardless I looked at my sight through his eyes.

To my surprise, there were some spelling and grammar errors and I went through all of my posts rereading them out loud and revising them.

My Point:

This "negative" feedback if you will was the most POSITIVE for my site. By this user being brutally honest with his opinions helped me to see my site from a different perspective!

So overall it changed the way I give people feedback now.

Some members impress me with their feedback because of the length and TIME they put into thoroughly reviewing websites. **LOVE YOU GUYS**

How I give Site Feedback Now:

I get straight to it, I give them an opening compliment if I like the theme, niche, logo, anything I like , I tell them.

Then I get to where I think they can improve

  • Does the theme fit the niche?
  • Is the font readable? How about the colors?
  • Are there enough pictures? Are they flush?
  • How about spelling and grammar?
  • Is the menu easy and organized to read?
  • How does the about me look?
  • Would I trust this site?
  • Does it have potential?
  • What can they eliminate? Side bars?
  • What can they add? An email list? Social media?

I usually think in these terms to help give the websites the most CONSTRUCTIVE criticism

Compliments are great and I give them, but SIte Feedback is for for giving users something to work with.

If you say

"your site looks great, I love the theme, niche, articles, pictures and organization, it's perfect..."

Feedback like that might make you feel good, but what help is it doing for your website?

Give hard honest feedback, but just from your opinion the way you see things.

I think people will appreciate it more than just you giving your "approval" of their website.

Hope this has helped clarify SIte Comments and Site Feedback for the newbies!

How do you give feedback? I'd love to hear your thoughts as well!

~Mike

If it makes you ebarassed, they dont want to do this.
Some of my friends sent me a private message and their ideas helped alot.

I agree with your idea about feedback. Once I posted here at WA, asking people to "painfully honest" with their feedback of my site. This is the only way we can improve. Sometimes we just do not see our own site, as others see it. When I do give criticism of someone else's site, I worry about them feeling offended. But I never mean any offense. I just believe we need to be very honest, and give constructive criticism.

I agree with you Jim , I like to give a compliments with all my feedback because creating a website is a success in itself!

That was something I was going to mention as well - that I feel bad when I give constructive critisim. But that's what it's there for - to help people improve!

Absolutely. We just need to be honest but not mean in any way. I would much rather be told my faults, than to just go wondering why I'm not succeeding

Exactly!! Same here!!

This is really great Mike and thanks for bringing it up! It's something that I've been thinking about recently as well since I've been really utilizing both of those.
When I request Feedback, I don't want all compliments. I want to know where I can improve. It's almost a let down when all you receive is positive remarks - no one is that good! Especially being new to this, I know I can improve in many many areas!!
As for Comments - what I've been doing recently is, after I leave comments on someone's site, I go back after it's been approved (I have a 100% approval rate btw :) ), and read what the author has replied back to me with. Maybe they answered a question. Maybe their reply can engage in more comments. While we will not receive more credits for replying back to a reply, it's awesome to keep engaging on that initial comment if you can. And you never know; the more you do that for others, the more they may do it for you as well!

That's a good point because we don't get notifications when there's a reply correct?

Thanks and I agree 100% with everything you said!
That's exactly why I needed to make this a blog! haha
Thanks for the comment!

Well we do if you check at the SiteComments section. But generally no

Good post and clarification of the difference between the two!

Thanks!

Thanks so much sharing and great info! I think many newbies really do not know the difference and you really helped to clarify.

I made the mistake myself!
Plus the more site comments and site feedback I do the more I learn from all of you!
You can start to distinguish between genuine feedback, and credit feedback if you know what I mean!

Thanks for the post very helpful. I would like to add, being brutal honesty is fine, constructive feedback is even better. It is how you talk to people, if you want people to be receptive to your suggestions. Most importantly, remember giving feedback to help your fellow community member. Therefore, statements like, "change your font," is not good enough. Explain what that means, is it too big, small, etc. Thanks for listening... ~Sherry

Exactly Sherry! Commands don't really help, but suggestions and elaborations do!
Thanks for the contribution :)

Yes, exactly...it is awesome to contribute. Thank you have a wonderful week :)

Thanks for posting. You did a good job explaining the difference.

Thanks!

Very valid points Mike and thank you for clarifying the differences :)

Anytime!

Good info!Thanks!

I'm brutally honest when I'm giving feedback. I expect the same in return. Maybe someone's criticism will help the site perform better. Maybe it will lead to conversions. We're all here to help and this is the best way to get it in my opinion.

Couldn't agree more!
