As far as I know has only original content positive effect on the ranking in Google. About the influence of inter-linking I know nothing.

Hi - you should also be able to upload (via FTP if you're comfortable with it) an icon named "favicon.ico" to the root directory of your website.
If you already have a logo you want to use, there are many online "converters" that will take your image, and create an icon (.ico) file from it - eg: http://image.online-convert.com/convert-to-ico
