Want Better Support? Show, Don't Tell

Just a quick tip here everybody.

I've noticed a lot of people trying to get help in live chat, or classrooms, or blog posts or training, (everywhere basically), and trying to explain their problem with words.

Stuff like "In the top corner on the 5th line it's kind of italic and I want it to be kind of bold instead"

or

"I'm trying to publish this thing and it's not jumping like I expected and I can't see it at the front anymore. Help!"

I know that you might have a hard time describing your situation, especially if you are new and don't know all the vocabulary needed.

Often, the person trying to help out has to guess what you are talking about.

Equally, that person might reply "Well, you need to press the button that looks like a Squirrel that's been turned into a giant B, and then highlight the thing you want to change, and then hit the green/blue/white/I forgot what color button".

Nightmare right??

Here's a much simpler way for everyone to get help: Use monosnap to take a picture, draw on it, then provide the link, like this: http://take.ms/TBr8I

It took me about 2 minutes to create that, then I hit the "upload" button and the link was created and automatically copied to my clipboard, ready for me to paste into this box.

Wayne has already created a great training about monosnap, so everyone go and familiarize yourselves with it, and let's get some better help on the go.

Next time you are trying to describe a problem, show a picture.

Cheers,

Dom

Where is the swordsman?! Where?!

Well you are right to others members that is helping others it will help.

I just still worrying about Terms of service in Monosnap like this:

https://www.monosnap.com/page/terms

In Intellectual property of Administration. Legal status of Content.

3.7. If you post Content to the Project, unless we indicate otherwise, you give Administration and its affiliates a nonexclusive, royalty-free, worldwide, perpetual, irrevocable and fully sublicensable right to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, perform and display such Content in connection with:

I don't want to upload my special project there but if you said only to show maybe a wordpress webpage that's okay. I am saying this because I don't want to lose my ownership for my files. :)

The tools is pretty awesome I have to say more than Droplr does! Just FYI. :)

Great post Dom. :)

Jorge, will you use monosnap to share your bank account, or a picture of your screen?

Their terms and conditions are basically the same as Facebook and every other site you upload something to, even Droplr.

Also, I thought I would let the swordsman relax for now!

I will be crazy on upload my bank account even in Droplr. lol

I mean my friend for example in rotalty photos from fotolia, bigtocks etc.

As I said if is only for support that's okay. :)

Thank you Dom, this will really help to simplify things for us when we are asking for help and also helps us in paying it forward to other members who need a little assistance too :-) brilliant tool, thanks again for sharing

No disrespect Dom but why use monosnap? I find it just as easy to use the built-in clipboard and Paint, already provided with windows. Is it better to use monosnap because of the upload feature?

My current method is
1. PrintScreen (or PrtSC) key takes a screenshot
2. Open Paint then click Paste.
3. Crop and save.

That quite literally takes just 10 seconds, except I then have to upload it, for which I normally use tinypic.

Thank you Dom

Hi Dom - good reminder - a picture is worth a thousand words or whatever the saying is :)

I do find even with family, if they're trying to explain a problem they're having on their computer, they sometimes just don't know the right terminology to describe it - so I end up jumping in the car and going round to "see" what they are trying to describe, or trying to talk them through how to take a screen shot so they can email it to me. Inevitably, I still jump in the car!! I'll be letting them know about this very useful tool.

All the best, Mark

Yeah it's amazing how many people don't know about it. So simple.

I love the wiggly line :)

It's my proudest moment

super. Thanks---I didn't know about monosnap, and now I just made a lovely free addition to my life.

I love monosnap!

Great post! Everyone should read this.

That's great! Will have to check out Wayne's training!. Thanks for the tip!
