Three Changes I Made In My Latest Post And One Bonus

So I am often tweaking my site and looking for small things to improve usability and engagement, and in the last post I implemented 3 such things.

It would probably have been better to do them 1 at a time to track results, but if I've got an idea of something I want to change, I tend to just run with it.

Here's what I did:

1. Added an embed code for Infographics.

I've seen this a lot recently, particularly Neil Patel's infographics. Essentially what you do is, create an infographic or other high-quality image that a lot of people are going to want to use, and add an embed code to the bottom so that people can share the image on their own sites.

This is effectively "link-bait" which will get a few links back to your article (I put a link to my site in the embed code).

Let's face it, people are going to want to "borrow" your graphics, but most people are inherently honest and would much rather use your embed code than steal your image.

2. Changed my comments plugin

I was originally using the default wordpress comments, but I've seen a lot of people using Disqus on their sites recently.

What I liked about disqus was that when you leave a comment, you're automatically subscribed to the thread, so when someone replies, you get an email notification. This is incredibly useful for all parties. They get to see their answer after they've forgotten about it, and you get return visitors to your site.

Also, it has Facebook integration as well, so people don't have to bother filling in their details or adding a captcha (I hate captchas).

It is also fully readable by search engines, so you get the full SEO benefits that the default comments give as well.

3. Added "Tweetables"

I'm not sure if this will have much practical use, or if it's just something I think is cool, but there are plugins that let you make lines of text "Tweetable". I added a couple of soundbites to the end of my post and turned them into tweetables. If you click on them, it will let you tweet the soundbite with a link back to my article, so you get to share some catchy soundbites (everyone loves quotes on twitter) and I get more links to my post etc.

Off-topic slightly, I've found that when twitter users share these tweetables and quotes from other places on their accounts, rather than just sharing their own stuff all the time, it makes them more engaging and they tend to get more followers.

Try out the disqus plugin for yourself and leave me a comment.

Bonus: My bonus is that I'm now thinking about my content creation in reverse. I'm thinking about the "transformation" or the "end goal" for my posts, and thinking about titles, keywords etc last.

I wrote about 2 or 3 titles for that last post, but I had already written the article when I did so. I find it is a lot easier to make your content more engaging when you do this.

Think of it like a SatNav..you put the destination in first, then it calculates the route.

I'll talk more about this later, so stay tuned!

Hi! I am so glad I ran into your site. TERRIFIC work! You are already a fave of mine and I will learn so much from you...thanks.

This post just got bookmarked in my WA favorites. Good job Dom.

Thanks :)

Another excellent post, Dom. I love the graphic you created. I never thought of embedding a link...very smart. I will check into Disqus and also start using tweetable features. Thanks for sharing this valuable information. ~Rebecca

No problem! Will be interesting to see how it all pans out.

Hi Dom. Disqus sounds intriguing, I'll check it out. I've seen the tweetable feature on a couple of sites I follow. I've never clicked it but I think these popular sites have quite a bit of success with it because they keep using it. I may play around with it, first on their sites and follow what happens, and then maybe on mine. Thanks for this info.

Yeah, who knows whether it really works, but I think it looks cool at the very least :)
