Dealing with Special Characters.
Let me digress a bit from the technical side of Unicode characters, to show the key code combination of some of the most popular nonalphabetical characters or symbols using a Windows keyboard with a separate numerical keypad.
To enter the copyright symbol ©, continue to hold the alt key down then press 1 8 4 on the numerical keypad. Substitute the number code after the + sign for other characters or symbols.
The square bracket is for clarity do not enter it.
Commercial and trade symbols
[$ alt + 36 ] [£ alt + 156] [¥ alt + 190] [¢ alt + 189] [¤ alt +207]
[® alt + 169] [© alt + 184] [ª alt + 166] [º alt + 167] [° alt + 248]
mathematical symbols
[½ alt + 171] [¼ alt + 172] [¾ alt + 243] [¹ alt + 251] [³ alt + 252]
[² alt + 253 ] [ƒ alt + 159] [± alt + 241] [× alt + 158] [÷ alt + 246]
You can also use this post to copy any symbol here instead of typing. I wonder what results I will obtain on a keyword search of some of these characters?
Apple has a simpler feature by holding down the option key and pressing the key representing the character or symbol:
The top row of keys ¡ ™ £ ¢ ∞ § ¶ • ª º – ≠
second row of keys œ ∑ ´ ® † ¥ ¨ ˆ ø π “ ‘ «
third row of keys å ß ∂ ƒ © ˙ ∆ ˚ ¬…æ
ASCII, ANSI, and Unicode are terms related to the character encoding set which translates computer code to recognizable symbols. In the early days ASCII was the first encoding system using 7 bits, today we have Unicode-32 with 32 bits.
If you ever encounter this error: "The character encoding of the HTML document was not declared" it is most likely you obtained a website file using a different language other than the one assigned to your computer. This error may occur if you outsource your website creation to an offshore web design firm.
