Influencer marketing and retail business

My last two blogs have centred around influencer marketing and the possibilities that exist for affiliates in the world of social influencers. For many of us new to affiliate marketing, utilising the benefits of influencer marketing will not likely be a resource that we can take advantage of in the short or even medium term. Depending on our niche, how much we plan to invest in promoting the brand and of course the ROI are all variables to be considered.

MACRO-INFLUENCERS:

In my last two blogs Influencer marketing - leveraging the reach of your brand and Is it worth having an influencer to drive traffic to your brand, I introduced the concepts of macro-influencers: the top, most successful influencers with millions of followers who are themselves a brand. These would be hugely expensive, but their audiences are also very large. The downside of macro-influencers is that they attract all kinds of followers and not necessarily those who speak to your particular target audience.

MICRO-INFLUENCERS:

I also introduced the micro-influencer: these usually have much smaller numbers of followers and are less expensive to get into business with. Their biggest advantage though is that using a micro-influencer, you have a greater chance of reaching a much more target audience, though smaller in number. Remember as well that a micro-infuencer can be a blogger/vlogger, journalist, industry expert or thought leader.

MID-TIER INFLUENCERS:

Interestingly, between these two, there is the medium-sized influencer or a mid-tier influencer. As the name suggests, these influencers have between 50K and 500K followers so they are really middle of the road influencers. Though they do not have the mega followers as their higher level counterparts, they are comparable to a transition phase from mild popularity to all out stardom. They also have enough clout to secure large brand partnerships.

NANO-INFLUENCERS:

There's a fourth category of influencer - the nano influencer. According to Ethos, "the nano-influencer is your everyday social

media users, with anywhere from 100 to 10,000 followers. They aren’t professional “influencers” in any way. Additionally, nano-influencers typically receive little to no pay, and instead receive free product or services in exchange for posting on their social media platform, in their own style." The great news for affiliates about nano-influencers apart from the fact that they're inexpensive, when they do post about a product/service, it comes across as more authentic because it is not driven by the influencer's desire for popularity and genuineness is really what most brands are seeking.
