Other Topics And A Plugin

It was brought to my attention the other day that some people here don't like my posts. I have only two words for you...

Unfollow me!

If you don't know how to do that I will personally walk you through the steps with a confident smile and polite attitude. Why? That's how I was raised.

1. Go to my photo at right.

2. Click on View Profile.

3. The top left corner, under my name, there's a green box 'Unfollow'.

4. Click it.

See? That was painless for both of us. Now, you don't have to read my posts. Just PM me when you are finished so I can do the same. No names will be mentioned to protect all of us. This is a two way street kind of deal.

This next one is for those of you who don't like the overcrowding of emails. How to cut down on email:

1. Click on YOUR photo in the top right hand corner (above the larger version of yourself).

2. A drop down menu will appear. Click on Account Settings (second one down).

3. Scroll all the way down.

4. There you will see the following, with various boxes to choose from for setting your email:

"You are receiving email for the following events

select which types of email to receive"

Got it? Good. Now, on to the good stuff! Plugins!

First off, I need to apologize about yesterday's recommendation (WP Content Copy Protection & No Right Click). Yes, I deleted that post. It was brought to my attention that the source code was not protected. Someone was able to download that specific page. So, I deactivated it, then deleted this plugin. I suggest you do the same. I found a much better plugin that does protect the source code.

Note: As Administrator you can still access the source code unless you open it in a different browser, like I did. It works great!

TG Copy Protection

This particular plugin does, in fact, protect the source code along with disabling keyboard shortcuts, right mouse button (nefarious button at times) and left mouse button (that's right! Copy & Paste!). There is also four settings to choose from. Yes, your visitors are still able to register! They can't steal your content. Those unruly content thieves. Sneaky!

You can test this plugin on my test site at the right. Yup, the short titled/named site (second one down).

One last thing! For today anyway!

I have over 1900 followers and Rank 112! I suppose that could be considered a 'success' but this isn't the only topic. Just the last. Priorities, people!

Back to work!

Love it, and keep them coming. also the training for TG protection is great.
To your success. Thanks, Brendie

You're welcome!

Hi Brendie, a most interesting post. Irv.

That's good!

Hi Brendie...
How do you know people don't like your posts - we don't have a Dislike button?

I looked at your bre site to see that copy protection stuff and from the user/reader pov - sorry - I hate it. (and I don't mean plagiarise.)

Here's why...
Sometimes sites have (not yours there) small grey print on a white background (ie. difficult to read) so then I highlight the text to read it as I read it. Can't do that there.

If I'm going to comment on something specific, then I copy the text into the comment box to keep it in front of me while I write the comment - then delete it before I post or put it in inverted commas to show exactly what I'm referring to - can't do that there.

This is especially useful if what I'm commenting on is taken from different sections in the article and more so when referencing different pages - all 3 or 4 bits in front of me and I don't have to keep scrolling or switching pages to make sure I remembered everything and remembered everything exactly right.

If the site has useful practical info that I want to try... say how to make something (like a dog comfy cushion from an old jersey) or ... recipes... then I copy it to notepad or Word, print it and go do the doing with just the instructions I need in front of me.

I don't use my phone cos the screen keeps turning itself off, the print becomes small to fit the small screen and it matters if it gets batter or water all over it - paper gets tossed in the bin or "filed" for reuse when I'm done. I also don't want to have to scroll my phone when my hands are covered in dough, mud or cement or whatever.

Those are just 3 reasons off the top of my head why I think protecting your text might not be such a good idea from the USER's pov and remember - I can still swipe your image anytime I want because you're not protected from screen dumping.

..It's not that I don't like your post - I just don't agree with the product - because well, we do this for the user's convenience and not our own.
Peace man - just my tuppeny's worth.

First off, let me commend you for being honest. Second, I looked into this product in response to others (not you) getting irritated that their content was getting stolen. I am helping them secure their sites if they want to. Only IF they want to.

I have a simple question (maybe two or more) for you:

Did you have an open mind when you went to my test site?
Honestly, I don't think you did.

If you were close minded, why did you go there anyway?

I wonder about this. Truly curious. Seriously, why?

Did you even look at the product? If you did you would have seen that there are four settings, yes, four. The following is an excerpt (quite large) from this product page:

"This plugin allows you to copy-protect the content of your WordPress website or blog in one of the following manners and you can change this setting at any time:

1. Enable copy protection by disabling mouse and key commands for copying, printing, saving, source-code, etc. When this option is selected, TG Copy Protection will not allow copying of contents of your website by keyboard commands (such as Ctrl-C) or by mouse commands. In fact, with this option selected, one cannot highlight or select any text from your posts or pages. Thus, copying of your contents will be blocked. This method takes care of various copying methods, such as by Ctrl-C, Ctrl-A, Ctrl-X, printing page from browser by Ctrl-P, saving files from browser by Ctrl-S, viewing source-code of web page by Ctrl-U, viewing page code in developer mode (such as by Ctrl-Shift-I in Google Chrome), mouse right-click, text-selection, drag and drop, etc.

2. Enable copy protection by setting copied text to nothing, i.e., by emptying it. When this option is selected, TG Copy Protection uses another method to prevent copying of your content. In this method, when the user selects the text for copying, the text is allowed to be selected; however, the copied text is set to nothing, i.e., it is set to an empty string. So, when the user pastes this text in some other application or file, your copied contents will NOT get pasted.

3. Disable copy protection, but append copyright text with page link to copied text. When this option is selected, TG Copy Protection plugin will disable the copy protection, i.e., it will allow copying of text. However, the plugin will append your copyright text and your page-link or backlink or credit-link (of the web page from where copying took place) to the copied text. Thus, when the user pastes the copied text in his application or file, the pasted text will include your page-link and copyright warning. This plugin gives you freedom to change what copyright text should appear appended to the copied text.

4. Disable copy protection completely, i.e., allow full copying as it happens in most of websites normally. When this option is selected, TG Copy Protection plugin will do nothing, i.e., it will allow the normal working of the website, wherein its contents are allowed to be copied freely by any visitor to your site." -- This information belongs to TG Copy Protection on Wordpress.org

As I said, I don't think you really looked into the product. Nor do I think you were open minded.

As for screen shots (dumps, whatever), well, that is a tricky situation. You see, if used correctly, it can be a useful documentation tool (prt scr) for research or for your OWN site. There are other areas for use. But, then you go down the slippery slope and use it to steal, put it on your own site or sell the information. You see where I'm going don't you. The proper usage of screen shots should not be taken lightly. Ever. Just like other steps to ensure the safety of our content, our sites, and our sanity.

So, next time someone writes about a plugin or script that might prove useful to others here, don't be so close minded or don't go there if you are already dead set against it.

Off to bake bread! Love the smell of freshly baked bread & that first slice with melted butter...

Peace Brendie, I looked at your site and gave you my opinion of the feature from a USER's point of view. (Not the pov of the owner of copyrighted material on the web.)

And no, I didn't go examine the plugin... why would I examine a plugin that I think might irritate more of my visitors than not? (Sheesh - I'm still waiting for the visitors!)

..Hot baked bread with butter????
I just turned into a salivating ooze of very green slime..... Enjoy.

PS. I don't use screen dumping to steal - and have already deleted your image - but .... :-)) ... I realise you have only my word for that.
;-)

Yes, I make homemade bread (a couple different varieties) at least twice a month, sometimes more. Always keep a loaf of store-bought bread just in case I run out of ingredients and can't get more. Right now, I have a partial loaf of homemade bread in the freezer (honey and oats!). Today I will be making a different one.
lol Again, did you read the settings I put up there in my reply? You don't have to have it on that setting.

Your settings? You mean #1-4 above?
Yeah. I read them - but I'm trying to keep my plugin count down and why have it to use setting 4? As a user, I don't like this stuff - and I've met that sneaky #2. Now I know what causes it!- Thank you :-)

I'm open-minded enough, Brendie - if I was putting up my photies that I was selling for $200 a shot - I'd use it. Maybe - I haven't heard that they've found away to block "Print Screen + Control Print Screen" yet.

And yeah too.... honey an' oats deserves that exclamation mark.

lol It's still good information to have even if you never use it. At least now you know why!
Yes, I have part of the honey and oats loaf in the freezer. It's not light and airy like store bought, so it fills you up faster. Good with two hard boiled eggs in the morning.
The other bread I am making now, using the toaster oven (have my reasons), is a different recipe so I will end up with 4 small loaves. Added vanilla to that one. And, has honey in place of sugar. This one you have to let it rise for an hour, punch it, then roll it, braid it, and let rise again. This one is very time consuming. But fun! And tasty!
Next bread making event, I may decide to put blueberries and nuts in one. And then try out a few other recipes. Got a list of them to do.
My freezer will be stocked enough to where I won't need store bought. Have small freezer. Fifth wheel trailer freezer...

Great information. Thanks, Brendie

Wayne

You're welcome!

Nobody is everyone's cup of tea - they can drink coffee instead :-)

True! I drink both. Regular coffee, black tea, raspberry tea, and peppermint tea. Sometimes sweet tea. Mints! Must have mints!

Congrats, Brendie. I need the emails so I can learn the business. I still have alot to learn.

I didn't change my email preferences either. There is always a good chance that there might a great piece of information! But, I have a system of going through them that I started today.

My system is a pain in the neck because of my schedule.

I understand! Schedules and systems have a habit of colliding. You'll figure it out.

Brendie,
Although this isn't a success post, congrats anyway :) I find your posts to be informative, interesting and often funny. Nothing offensive at all.
Erica

Thank you for the nice comment!

Like the way, you keep it real. Great post, Brendie.

Mike
