About Brenda63
Joined January 2019
I am a Deaf (I use American Sign Language-ASL to communicate). I am a disabled person living in an electric wheelchair and reside in the beautiful state of Oregon, (Pacific Northwest) Portland area.

I am also recently widowed, lost my husband (v’nam vet ‘66 to ‘68, he was long range sniper) of 18 years from Pancreatic Cancer, two years ago. His cremains are buried in Jamestown, North Dakota. He has one surviving daughter (from a previous marriage before me) and three grandkids.

I grew up in Minnesota. Minneapolis/St. Paul, the Twin Cities metro area and spent the other half of my life in Washington, DC attending a deaf high school and college there at Gallaudet University campus. Most of my married life was spent in Fargo, North Dakota- Moorhead, Minnesota. Too cold there. Glad I do not have to deal with the harsh winters anymore.

Prior to attending Gallaudet University in the early 80’s. I went to 2 year associates degree RN nursing school at a private small college in Minneapolis, MN. At that time, I had better hearing. I worked at 3 different skilled nursing facility where I saw a lot of elder abuse. I am grateful, we have better law today that strives to prevent elder abuse. Many of my patients suffered a horrible death. I left nursing to head back to Gallaudet University, majored in Social Work.

I've been a network marketer in MLM since the early 1980s and joined so many different MLM businesses that were not successful.

I started affiliate marketing many years ago but never really found any success mainly because I had no education, training, or background on how to market or how to build a website niche or write a blog.

FYI-I worked as a mortgage loan officer/loan originator for a start up mortgage company until the sub prime lending went bust along with it, lost my job again. I received training experience in sales, credit, debt consolidation, and marketing. Before that worked for a corporation that processed common stocks reports to the Securities Exchange Commission. The corporate decided to downsize, lost my job.

After sub-prime lending problems that led many mortgage companies to shut down, the mortgage industry changed, made it harder for people to qualify for loans. The process became stricter to prevent fraud. Many people up losing their homes to foreclosure. Did some bird dogging and note brokering deals for real estate investors after the collapse.

I went back to school for a career change. While attending school, I worked part-time as caregiver in a private state funded group home until health challenges left me unable to return back to the job.

I decided to become a life and healthcare insurance agent and worked for Bankers Life and Casualty. There I learned more about how to market my insurance business and how to do cold calling and close sales. I enjoyed helping people.

All these different job experiences enabled me to develop wide diverse employment skills.

I always wanted to be a business owner and
I look forward to this new learning adventure here at WA that will help me to be successful.

Sincerely,
Brenda Z.

Hi Brenda thanks for the follow. I too failed many times in conventional MLM way too many weight loss, pills, potions and lotions for me!

Having a financial sales background of many years I now focus on alternative income streams with financial products.

WOW!!! It looks, to me, as if you are well on your way to learning an' using every career opportunity available to mankind. I'm quite impressed. I'm sure you have never let the grass grow under your feet.

That said, I'm so sorry to hear 'bout your hubby an' your health issues. I DO understand health issues, as life has a way of sharing such fun. What thrills me the most is the fact that, even with your health bein' the way it is, you have continued to take life by the horns an' live it on your own terms. Good on ya'!

I am so pleased to meet you an' know that we can communicate, from time to time. Keep on 'Keeping ON'. You are truly an inspiration, my friend.

Warmly,

Hello Brenda and thank you for the follow... I had added you to my network too.
I hope you have started the journey toward having your own online business.

I only joined at the end of June but I am really excited and optimistic about the future. I am due to retire in about 5 years and I wanted to have some income after retirement but also to have something to keep my mind sharp.

Anyway I was interesting reading the variety of things you have done in your bio and sort of meeting you.

I've run an online business for about 10 years now, but I want to grow my online income by getting good at affiliate marketing. I wrote a bit more about how my online business is evolving if you care to learn more about the display advertising side of the online world :-) Have a great day, and I look forward to hearing more about your successes on here!

Hi, Brenda-
It sounds as if you're feeling frustrated about using the WA website. I'm new to WA-been doing this for about 3 weeks. I also have been frustrated at times with the site. I remember when I started selling life insurance(I was mediocre)-just made enough to get by. Then, I had to leave for other sales jobs where I did better. One of the insurance sales trainers used to repeat a little ditty for such times and when I get frustrated, I remember it and also implement it. I know it sounds trite but it works for me. Maybe it will help you get through the frustration. It goes, "Life is hard, yard by yard but it's a cinch, inch by inch".
Hang in there and take it inch by inch.

Hello Brenda ... thank you for the follow. I recently met another WA member who is Deaf. He has already completed both the OEC and Bootcamp training. He is an interesting and resourceful guy and I thought you might be interested in learning more about how he copes with his disability here at WA.

Yes, I already met Daryl. He is in my network. Thanks so much. I would not say that my deafness is a disability or a hindrance. But I have other disabilities as well. Deaf people can do anything except hear. There is nothing to cope with. Except for me to cope with my disease, Multiple Sclerosis. That is all there is to it. There are many successful Deaf people. You probably saw them on television. Nyle Demarco, in Top Model and Dancing with the Stars? He is Deaf and is a strong member of our Deaf community. Marlee Matlin, another long television Deaf actress, and movie star. Many many more are on televisions and Deaf actors and actresses being portrayed in movies. Awesome. Thanks for accepting me following you. Yeah, the best to you too.

Poor choice of words on my part. Daryl explained that the training videos do not have a caption feature as they do over on YouTube.

This made me wonder how other Deaf members cope with the training. K&C are continuously looking for ways to improve this training platform and I was wondering if video captioning was on their list.

Kyle suggested a tip. This tip is to use dictation software on my iPhone. That's how I did it. For Jay's live training, I just turn on my dictation software and let Jay do the talking, it types out what he says. The dictation is not 100 percent effective but it's enough for me to get the benefit. Watching and reading the live chat while Jay is in the training also helps me to know what is going on. Kyle did mention that having a transcript won't benefit because the video will be updated from time to time. Most of the training is readable written text and more visual than the talking. Kyle's voice in the video is the same as the text reading in the training. No biggie there. I do not miss out because of that dictation software. Kyle says he plans to think about closed captioning the videos at a later date. Thanks to technology. Also, another thing that's cool is that there is video software out there that does closed captioned, YouTube is one of them.

Good afternoon Brenda,

When I meet new people here at WA I always ask: do you know the World Library? I sometimes use it when writing for my websites as you can find unusual information there.
So in case you do not here comes: www.wdl.org

Thanks, Taetske for the information. I was told you are not allowed to have any outside website links except links within WA. Its considered spam. I could very easily find it on Google on my own without the link. All you have to do is say "World Library" to Google but no links. I could easily report the link as spam but I'm not going to do that. Because you know the rules. Thanks.

No software used for that. It doesn't work that well. Dictation software is not one hundred percent a lot of spelling errors and incorrect words. Hire a transcriptionist is the only other way to ensure that the voice in the video is stated accurately.

Hi Brenda,

Thanks for following me and joining my network. I've returned the compliment and followed you back.

Welcome to Wealthy Affiliate. WA is a great community. There is so much to learn. I am here most days. I learn something new every day.

I've been a Premium member of Wealthy Affiliate for two years, and I don't regret one day!

If you get stuck, and can't find the help within Wealthy Affiliate, pm me and I'll try and help out. Kyle and Carson are big advocates of "Giving it forward".

Keep moving ahead. However your day may be, take a little step forward. Some days you'll make significant strikes, other days you will not, but do something every day, however small in building your business.

You will read many stories of WA members are succeeding with their online goals. Some have achieved this in a few months; for others, it has taken a couple of years. The common trait for those that have reached their goals is taking action. Everyone who has succeeded has taken small steps every day. Do something, however tiny, every day, and you will reach your goal.

Pace yourself and enjoy your journey. Remember, little steps are better than no steps!

Best wishes,
Paul.

No, I haven't met any deaf people. From my experience, they do very much like to keep to themselves. With our culture changing and being older, this may change also.

Would like to meet some deaf people & communicate on their level. Will also open up my world and give me a new experience of life.

My my love of writing & wanting to do this as a child & growing up, I would like to further myself in writing & other forms of communication. Definitely a world to explore.

You can find them all around the community in Melbourne. You got to watch and pay attention. They are all around. They do not keep to themselves. They are very involved in the community. They go out to eat and go to different places. I know there are more Deaf community in Brisbane, Syndey, Gold Coast, of course, Perth, another big city out west of Australia. Melbourne has a deaf residential school on St Kilda Road I think its called Victorian College for the deaf, prep to 12 years. Furlong Park School for Deaf Children.

Yes, I know of them very well. Furlong Park School for the Deaf (in Sunshine) is two (2) suburbs away from where my mother actually lives - she lives in St Albans.

Hi Brenda

My partner is deaf although he was born hearing so he speaks and relies on lipreading, in other words he is oral. He has some sign language but started to learn too late in life so if I sign while I speak it helps him but he cannot rely on sign alone.

We are in the UK so it is BSL which is very different to ASL. You guys have a one-handed alphabet - I am so jealous of that, we use two hands which is inconvenient some times, like if you are carrying something lol

I think you will find WA tricky initially with the training because it is video heavy and there are no closed captions. I was wondering if you have any speech to text software that you use to help you follow what Kyle is saying? I would love to be able to involve my partner in WA but without captions, or better still genuine subtitles he is lost.

It's a great shame because I think the opportunities WA offers would be an absolute life-changer for deaf people I know who struggle to find paid work in the hearing world and have to settle for low-paid manual work. Don't get me started, it makes me so angry!

I am so excited to meet you here and I just want to encourage you to stick with this even though I know it will be challenging due to your deafness. If there is anything I can help with please don't hesitate to get in touch.

All the best

I know Auslan (Aussie Signs) my brother in law is Deaf but lives here in the States, he married my Deaf sister. We use capital D -Deaf family, we are five generations and belong to the Deaf community. I know how to use both hands for BSL and AUSLAN, both languages are not the same, each has own signs but the alphabet is the same.

Thanks for sharing with me.

Eventually, it is my hope that Carson and Kyle and the company can find any way to utilize the technology to help Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals who want to join WA.

The training videos have already been transcribed and it's posted here on WA.

I have Dragon Dictation software on my phone and I haven't tried it yet. I will test it to see if that works for other videos without having to depend on other WA members to transcribe it, thanks for the reminder.

The training is pretty visual and I follow along with where the mouse cursors go and also follow the script, I read it, the link is somewhere listed down my on my profile. I will send the link to you if I find it so that your partner can read and follow along it shouldn't stop anyone from wanting to succeed whether they are deaf or not.

He can do it, anyone can, yes it takes work but that how business works.

Thanks.

Wow Brenda we are not that far away Portland is only i think 315 miles from Vancouver British Columbia.
Welcome to wa and all the best !

I have cousins living in Milwaukee Oregon right near the bomber gas station which as of a few years ago the owner took down the bomber because he found out it's worth around 1/4 million because now bombers are quite rare not like after the war.

Do you know about the bomber gas station ?
Anyway all the best for 2019 and folliwing u !

Are you talking about the “Lacey Lady”
B-17 Bomber from WW2? I never saw it because it was gone before I moved here but the Lacey Bomber is now at a restoration hanger to which the family now working on restoration of the plane. Art’s grandson opened a museum (never been there) and restoration takes a long time because replacing old parts hard to find these days. They dismantled the plane and building it back up. Thanks for sharing that with me.

Thanks for the follow, I returned the favor as well.

WA is all new for me. I’m working on it.

Thanks!

Yes that's the one they had thousands of those bombers after the war so now they are rare.
Apparently the city would not allow the bomer to be placed above the pumps and so they did it anyway ! Then they got a petition signed by thousands of people and were allowed to keep it.

My cousins the Lisacs lived just down the rode on a 3 1/2 acre plot of agricultural land in a 4500 sq. ft. Home right by the creek only about 5 homes in the neighbourhood.
Can you imagine back un the late 60's they bought the whole thing for like $20,000.00 times have changed.

The lisacs still have 2 stores i believe that sell free heat fireplace inserts, that's the history story for today ha ha by for now and have a great day !

I look forward to catching in the community, as in reading your posts etc. I was interested to learn that you did MLM. I also did that for a few years, with no positive results. Anyway, those years are behind us and you're now part of a wonderful community.

Thank you, Laura, wanted to thank you for your post. I intend to take it slow and steady, not in a rush at all. Nor will I skip around. I don't support the notion of cutting corners or think that this WA opportunity will be a get rich quick scheme. It never works that way. You have to put in the work in order to run a business. I appreciate all of the affiliates on here supporting each other. I have never seen an industry like WA.

Again, thank you.

Sincerely,
Brenda Z

Hi and congratulations on going premium with WA. It's a wise decision.

Your best bet from here is to follow all of the 5 course, 50 lesson Online Entrepreneur Certification training.

But the really important step is to apply what your learning WHILE YOU'RE LEARNING IT.

I can't emphasize this enough.

Not only will it make the training stick, but in no time at all you'll have your first WA website up and running.

Google ranking and monetization will follow inevitably.

If you're stuck any time, just post a question.

One of us at WA will answer it and you'll be off again.

It's a journey and you've just taken your first and best step.

I wish you all the best.

Phil
