Why You Should NOT Be Reaching All of Your Goals

Why is reaching all of your goals a problem? Because...

The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.
—Michelangelo Buonarotti

I believe that all of us have an autopilot mode. On autopilot, we just stay the course. We do what seems to keep us alive, and little else. It's mediocre. It's adventureless.

But it's safe.

And then there is the mode in which we kick ourselves out of autopilot and steer the ship ourselves. I'm not talking about being in control. I'm talking about going somewhere intentionally rather than drifting.

Right now, I'm leading a church that we planted five years ago. We've grown from two families to a congregation of 400-ish attenders.

So right now, I'm seeking coaching and advice from leaders who have been faithful in leadership roles in churches with 800 people coming.

Trust me, it's not about the numbers themselves. It's about needing to grow and expand my own leadership capabilities if we're going to continue to connect more people.

If you're reaching all of your goals, they're too small. If you're reaching none of your goals, you need to be more realistic. But I think more of us have the former problem.

So right now, think about your life and work. What goals do you have for your physical health? Your financial health? Your family and relational health? Your online business?

And what step do you need to take next to move toward reaching them?

To grow is the aim of any business. Either growing in size and turnover or in revenue. Actually one can't do without the other. But there has to be a balance.

Quite true.

Thank you for sharing this unique perspective.

Definitely!

Thanks for sharing, Brandon.

Absolutely!

I understand why you are coming from.

I'm quite glad.

Brandon, I have another opinion on that. If growth is your goal, you can work with a quantity, quality, and time goal and you can make use of sub-goals to reach your ultimate goal. Those sub-goals make it easier for you to prosper and to have a chain of success, which work as satisfaction and incentive, as Mike said. And when you fail on a sub-goal, you do it over again till you have overcome it. So in a church, I think that growth must be in quantity and in quality and you will never cease growing till your people become Christ-like in their condition. And this will take place at the second coming of Christ.

Very true. I do think, most of the time, if you focus on growing in quality, quantity will follow, but not always.

Great post. Makes you re-think where you are and where you are headed. Thanks!!

Glad it encouraged you!

Great perspective, Brandon.

I actually just started reading a booklet, "GOD and Money". I've attempted to read this booklet a few tines over the years, but I never finished. Along with Scriptures, it gives some practicals and they included a 7-day Quiet Time series.

What was somewhat startling was the number if times I started to read this booklet but never finished. I have read 250+ page books in a day, many times; this booklet is only 40 pages....

It's time to put on the full armor or GOD and slay that dragon!

Absolutely! Keep going!

As a school principal, I would tell my superintendent (boss) that my weakest area for bringing about change was with my mediocre teachers.

I explained that I could always help the ones who were struggling, and the ones who wanted to soar but I did not know how to help the ones who were okay being okay. Those teachers were perfectly happy being just the way they were.

I could never understand that. I believed that students deserved the "best", not just "okay".

When my sons were in their teens, I would ask them why they were happy with C+'s instead of A's and B's. They told me A's and B's would require a lot more work than they were willing to give to school. Sports, on the other hand received 100% of their drive. They would never settle for being less than elite athletes.

Setting our goals so that we are striving for something just out of reach keeps us moving forward and it ensures that we do not settle for "okay" or "mediocre", or "luke warm".

Thank you for your pep talk to help us keep aiming high.

I am with you!

Susan

Awesome Susan! I'm a recovering C+ student myself. If I'd known then what I know now...

Too funny.

Yes, my boys turned out just fine as did their A+ sister!

Thank you for sharing.

I always enjoy a good laugh!

Autopilot is a huge temptation, especially after you have had a long season of success. Better to always be pushing and occasionally failing while making progress than to find success at every turn and plateau!

Absolutely!

Middle of the road results provide satisfaction for the attained and incentive for the unattained. Great post Brandon!

Thanks so much!
