Digital Marketing is Like Building an Awesome Hamster Cage

I had a hamster once. His name was Bart, and he lived about three times as long as the average life expectancy of hamsters.

I have a theory... it was the wheel. Which is like a tiny treadmill, right?

One thing I never did for him, but always wished I had, was create an awesome network of tunnels. Like this one...

The more I learn about digital marketing, the more I'm convinced that building hamster tunnels would've made good practice.

Marketing is essentially drawing someone's attention to a timely offer that fulfills a need or desire they feel. It's all about keeping people interested and helping them know where to go next.

One of the common mistakes I see (and that I've made myself too many times), is seeing a sale as the end goal, when the actual end goal should be a relationship.

Everything we offer our audience, whether free or paid, should get attention because it meets a felt need. But that's just the first goal of our content. The second coal is just as important - it's to show them what might be next for them, too.

I'm not just talking about upsells. Upsells are pretty easy to spot and rarely communicate actual, increased value. Too many marketers use upsells in a way that communicates something like, your first purchase is okay, but it really isn't very functional without the thing I wasn't willing to tell you about at first.

An upsell should really say, what you got is probably just what you need and I wouldn't cheat you out of anything essential, but I do offer something that goes beyond even what your first purchase gives you.

Segmentation is a great example of building hamster tunnels for our audience.

You're into online business? Awesome. Join my list...

Once you're on my list, you might let me know you're actually into consulting and coaching... I have a sub-list for that.

Oh, you want to earn a living coaching, but you don't know how to develop the kind of website a coach might need? I have a solution for that.

And by the way, we can take that even further with this extra...

Oh, and one last thing... I'm going to stick with you to keep teaching you how to excel at this and passing along resources as I come across them.

Marketing isn't just selling. It's building a relationship with potential buyers that serves their needs on an ongoing basis.

At least that's what good marketing should be.

Nice concept! I like it!

It's about the "process." Focus on the process and not the results, ideally.

Colorful tunnel by the way. But they look too think for hamsters to move to a different cage.

Awesome demostration for digital marking. I really appreciate your last sentence, which said it all.

May I Quote:

"Marketing isn't just selling. It's building a relationship with potential buyers that serves their needs on an on going basis."
