The importance of site security

I would briefly like to inform members of a real life event that just happened only 3 weeks ago. And why it is so important to keep your site secure and regularly check your site on Google.

Approximately 2 months ago I had some loose gemstones that needed setting.

I GOOGLE jewellery manufacturers in Sydney and the results came up. And on the first page, 4th down the list, was the jeweller manufacturer I chose.

This jeweller has excellent reviews and is one of the leading manufacturers in Sydney with more than 30 years experience. So I couldn't go wrong and I didn't. The best jeweller I have ever come across and I would not go to any other jeweller in the future.

BUT now you cannot find him in Google. He is off the radar after only 5 weeks of being in the top 4. I even searched up to page 15 with no results. The only way I could find his website was by typing in his URL.

So the last time I saw him was 3 weeks ago and I informed him his site had become insecure. And he told me his nephew is handling the website and he had no idea on SEO and security.

So after only 2 -3 weeks of not being secure this is what has happened to his website. I rang him to let him know 2 days ago that he now has a very serious problem.

This is a message I received from McAfee antivirus protection. And for privacy I left his URL name out.

Whoa!

Are you sure you want to go there?

http://..................com.au/ may try to steal your information.

Why were you redirected to this page?

When we visited this site, we found it may be designed to trick you into submitting your financial or personal information to online scammers. This is a serious security threat which could lead to identity theft, financial losses or unauthorized use of your personal information.

THIS JEWELLER IS ONE OF SYDNEY'S BEST AND MOST TRUSTWORTHY SO HOW CAN THIS HAPPEN - SECURITY?

  • So do regular checks on your sites security
  • Make sure your site is secure
  • I have noticed within WA that some members sites are not secure
  • A leading jewellery manufacturer, ranked No. 4 in Google only five weeks ago, has disappeared off Google's search results.
  • It just goes to show that even some of the big players don't rank If their website is not secure. In addition they can come up as a security threat with anti virus programs, even though they may be legitimate.

This post is not about getting comments. It is purely to help some of you, especially newbies, understand the importance of website security because some of you do not have secure websites. I know cause I have viewed unsecured members sites in the past. And It was only about 50 minutes ago I viewed another. And this has prompted me to inform members of what can happen to unsecured websites as experienced with the jeweller.

Hi Brad

When I responded to your "Remember to check your verification" post, I happened to notice this post's Title and came to read...

WOW - I never would have thought it is THAT serious! Thanks for letting us know!

Wishing you all of the very best!

Thanks, Rich,

If it happens to the big players we don't stand a chance

We should all know the importance of site security, but seeing a real life example like this reinforces it in a way that no classroom training can.
Great information, Brad - thanks for sharing.
Cheers
Rich

Oh wow! Thanks for sharing

Welcome, Louisa,

Yes, it is very serious because I can see how Google is always raising the bar, in my opinion, and keeping everyone on their toes.
It is good in a way because in my niche I have noticed a few of the major players without secured sites. Whereas before they were secure sites.
People think they can just do a website and that's it. Like my jewellers nephew. Till now he still hasn't fixed the site and his uncle will be losing business.

Thank you, Brad :)

Cheers Carol!

Cowboys or Storm?

I like them both but I think Storm will most likely win.

Probably will be Storm but hoping for the Cowboys!

In line of your post, I find that this awareness is serious, and we people need to take these matters very serious. I really appreciate the face that you shared a life event that occuranced to you.

I for one has insecured site through siterubix. So I really need to get this issue in order, so back to the training on how to do this. I tried awhile back but to no avail.

Again, Thank You Very Much for this online awareness post.
