According to a very successful blogger, who has a website called coffee website, the second most important thing that Google looks for in ranking is EXTERNAL WEBSITES linking to YOUR WEBSITE.
No 1, of course, is content with an absolute minimum of 1000 words per post. To achieve external website links, one must come up with great content so other companies will link to your website.
The webinar I attended last week, really hit home about the importance of content and how it helps in other areas of marketing such as external linking. It was a fantastic webinar.
The guest speaker has even been sponsored to do reviews and visit coffee plantations in other countries. Described as having a holiday while writing a story. He also receives coffee machines from companies wanting publicity through his powerful website. Starbucks even use him as a reference.
I reckon' that proves the PEN is mightier than the sword!!!
WHEN I HEARD HIM TALK IT CHANGED MY VIEW ON WRITING POSTS AND I AM STRIVING TO GET A WHOLE LOT BETTER IN WRITING. I WANT TO GO TO NEW YORK AND BE SPONSORED BY COMPANIES WHO ARE IN MY NICHE MARKET.
Yes, I could handle that life, could you handle going to the Carribean if you're niche is rum?

There are companies out there that have monthly subscriptions for link sharing.
I was informed not to sign up. Google is aware of these and will black mark sites that share links with each other. I was also informed that the Google algorithms TODAY, (unlike 10 years ago), can read through websites like a human can read. There is no more fooling Google for ranking and it all comes down to how good your content is.

Great information, thank you! Yes and Jay also has a webinar 21 Minute Ranking Method in 7 Steps in which he also mentions putting an external link in.
This one is getting other websites to link back to your website.
It will take time to create that content but if you can get big companies to use you as a reference Google loves it.
