How to Write Effective Blogs

Last Update: May 15, 2014

You are excited and have something you want to share with the world, so you write blogs. But do you know how to write effective blogs for good search engine optimization results? Don't get me wrong, it is still okay to write blogs just to write and share your ideas. However if you are writing a blog for money, then you need to consider how you go about writing it effectively.

For example, 80% of the blogs that I write here at Wealthy Affiliate I do for two reason, to help educate all of my readers and to in some way enhance my online business. I do the latter by linking back to these blogs from within relevant content on my websites. There is also another way to make money with my blog.

DID YOU KNOW?

Every single one of these blogs that all of you are writing here within Wealthy Affiliate (WA) are not just visible to the WA community, they are visible to the entire internet world. Did you know that? Just like your websites are visible to the entire World Wide Web (www), so are these blogs that you are writing here.

If you write these blogs effectively, with the proper use of keywords for good seo, your blogs will rank highly in Google just like your website content. All of these blogs you are writing, including this one you are reading, are being indexed into Google. So if someone who is not a WA member reads this blog (or any of yours) and becomes intrigued enough to want to join WA, I (or you) will make money from that person joining.

Do you see why it is a smart idea to write some or all of your blogs with the same seo techniques that you use for your website? If you use proper seo guidelines within your blogs they will rank higher in Google. If they rank higher then more people will see them and perhaps one or more who see and read them may be inclined to join WA and thus you will make money from that.

SEO TIPS FOR BETTER BLOGS

If you are a member of Wealthy Affiliate I am sure you have already learned (or are about to learn) how to write your content effectively using keywords. The training that all members get here at WA, both Starter and Premium, teaches us how to find and then use keywords in our content. You just have to apply those same guidelines that you do for your website creation to your blog creation too.

Choose good keywords to use for your title, place those keywords in the first paragraph of your content and write naturally after that. For example, the keyword I used for this blog post is “how to write effective blogs” and as you can see it is repeated in the first paragraph of this blog. I was also able to place two other keyword phrases within the first paragraph as well. No I’m not going to tell you what they are. Let's see if you are smart enough to find them. Hehehe

Use the knowledge that you have acquired here at WA to not just write better website content but to also write better blog posts. Make sure to proofread your content a couple of times, correcting any spelling and grammar issues where needed. You never know who will be reading your blogs from outside of WA and it would be a shame if what you write in your blogs gives you and/or WA a bad reputation. So blog smartly people!

Of course, but you must do that for each post - target some keyword.

Great! But it has a sub-domain "blogspot". I think I could optimize to Google search engine though it has a sub-domain. Well for each post, how do I SEO? My blog is a personal blog and I share various links to it. (Youtube Movie Trailers, Songs, Pictures and other blog posts). I need any friend or anyone just to type in my Blog name: on the address bar "allanbspace.blogspot.com" and have a look at it.

SEO will only come by how your blogs are created, meaning how and where you use your keywords. The keywords also need to have low competition values so that your post will rank high and quicker. But if your blog is short on content it may have problems with SEO because Google rewards good SEO because on written content and not on just images and videos. Also being that it is on a sub-domain will keep the optimization down a bit but if you have some good written content and you are using your keywords correctly, it shouldn't be too bad.
Reply
allan5 Premium
Okay, what sort of low competition keywords do I've to use for my blog post? My blog doesn't have any niche and so I would like to know whether I can affiliate any niche to my blog.
Therefore I'll do more written contents and less images and videos because I know now that Google checks for good contents that has to be optimized in Google search engine.

Keywords don't have to be niche related. Just find a keyword that is relevant for however you want to make your blog, that's totally up to you.
Reply

Aha! That's fine. I'll do that. So is there any Keyword tools which I can use them for free? Not Jaaxy :) some tools that work like Jaaxy but for free. Cannot afford to pay :-/

I'm not very familiar with Blog content. Is there an area on WA I can go to; to find out more in depth information on writing Blogs?
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
Writing a blog is not that much different than writing a page of content for your website. It's normally not as in depth as a webpage. If you are not sure and you are seeking more information, just ask it in the search bar at the top of the screen. You can type in Writing Blogs and you will see all blogs and training on writing blogs, this blog included.

I'm pretty sure I read in the training that we are not allowed to link from here to our websites? In our blogs as well as questions. Is this correct?. But like you said, we can link from outside to inside.
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
No we are not supposed to. However I will from time to time post a link to my website if I am doing it solely for helping another member to understand something.

For example, If someone wanted to know where they would put an Amazon slide show widget I would tell them in their sidebar. If they needed to see an example I would give them the link to my home page which has 2 Amazon slide show widgets. If you are doing so to HELP members and not to SELL to members, then that's OK.

In the link below, check out the last sentence in #4 where Kyle says this very same thing.

I never said that this blog is linked to my website. I said that I link to this blog from relevant content on my website. Let us say I have content on my website about writing blogs. Is there a rule of thumb of how many words a blog should contain?
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
Not really but you should try for no less than 300.

Personally I love to write because I also like to talk, I'm a chatty person. Being that writing content is pretty much the same thing as having a conversation, albeit one sided and you are typing it out instead of speaking it, I have had blogs be longer than 1000 words and have done fine.

It mainly depends on how engaging you are with your content. If your content is informative, engaging, has character, descriptive, and you use images and/or videos, it could be long and your readers would not complain because you kept their attention. For example, this comment is 123 words long. Did it seem like it to you? :-)

Could index content that is in a private community password protected. In all my years in se i have never gotten search results to go to a private network for content based on my search results. Has anyone here?
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
When everyone here signs up for Google Authorship you must add your Google+ profile to not only your websites but to your WA account as well to inform Google that you are the contributor of the content created. Upon doing so Google will recognize and index all of your content that is created here within WA. This is why if you notice at the top of this blog post as well as the majority of others here at WA who have received Google Authorship, there is a red G+ icon.

Kyle explains this in his video here - https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/getting-your-wa-content-indexed-with-google-authorship

Reply

Yes good content is what will get you the traffic and good rankings. As for your keywords you want to only use your targeted keywords in the page or post title and then once within the first paragraph and that's it, just like I did for this blog post.

You are welcome Rick. I too like when I'm searching Google and I come across a WA blog post. But there are many members who don't realize that these WA blog posts are getting indexed into Google. These posts are not just visible to the WA community but to the entire world and they should be treated the same way as our website content for seo purposes. Don't get me wrong. It's okay to blog just to blog, but if you want it to be seen by the world, use keywords and use them properly.

You're welcome. Learning keywords isn't hard. Just place them in your page title and in your first paragraph and that's it. Just write naturally after that.

Sometimes you don't even need to target a keyword and you can just write because Google indexes ALL of your content and will rank you on the natural keywords within your content. Kyle explains this in his lesson on keywords at the below link.

It's really not that hard at all Simon. Too many people tend to over think their use. Just place the keyword in your title, the first paragraph (preferably within the first 155 character spaces) and then just write naturally after that. Just like I did with this blog post.

Everyone should ALWAYS proofread their content a couple of times before posting. I see so many people posting content, and not just here within WA, that should have been proofread before posting. I have written my articles/blogs with key words in mind but not sure that I have picked the most effective key words. Also as I was searching the internet to find my own site I came across some of the blogs I have written here on WA. That did surprise me but made me aware that I need to be careful what I write and make sure to write with intent and quality content. Thanks again. Robin
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
Exactly Robin! That is why I finished my blog post above by saying, "So blog smartly people!"

Every single one of these blogs that are written here at WA are being indexed into Google and released on the internet for everyone to see. If you blog here at WA just for the sake of writing any ole thing you should be aware that anyone who is not a WA member can read it too if they should find it while doing a Google search.

So if you write informative blogs that help to educate and/or entertain, make sure you do so with the same respect you give to your website because everyone can see and read it.

The green "success" button is for posting your blog as a success story of your accomplishments here at WA with your online business. Good points about writing good content with keywords. I do have a question about links though? It's mostly taught to use no more than 2 links per page. I just published a page about relieving back pain and exercises to strengthen the back. I have like 4 links because I'm trying to explain different things that can help. Is it too much?
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
No that's fine. I use 4 and sometimes 5 links per page and have no problems with the amount. As long as you do not do that many all the time and on every page.
Reply
Lemm Premium
I'd guess the other keywords are "writing a blog for money" and "way to make money with my blog" or shortened derivatives of these keywords.

I have a question. You mentioned in your last blog "When is a WA Affiliate Link Not and Affiliate Link" that he/she will not be able to look at other blogs and posts in WA until he joins WA. However if the blogs and posts in WA are visible to the whole internet, then this implies that he/she can look as many posts and blogs as he/she wants. Then who would get the credit here?

NIce post again....thanks for posting.
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
The person who is the creator of the blog the person is reading when that person joins.

Example: If the person is looking at my blog post and then goes back to Google and clicks on another WA Blog post from member B and then leaves and finds your blog post on Google, clicks on it and then joins, you will get the credit because they joined while reading your blog.

Again, like Kyle says in his video, if someone is reading your blog and clicks anywhere on the WA website they will be prompted to join WA.

The only way someone else will get credit is if they leave your blog post and thus WA and enter WA from another members blog post.
