How to Find a Niche Market - Just Look at a Magazine Rack

Last Update: May 11, 2017

I am someone who likes the outdoors. I go hiking on many of the local trails in the Appalachian mountains in the New Jersey and New York area. Some of these trails like the Cannonball Trail date all the way back to the American Revolutionary War time period.

In saying that I subscribe to the magazine Outdoor Life, which focus on many of the various niche markets within the broad niche of Outdoor Life. While looking through a recent magazine and coming up with some content ideas for my WA promotional website, I realized that a magazine is a great way to find niches.

HOW TO FIND A NICHE MARKET

If you are having a problem finding a niche, and I firmly believe most have problems because they still do not know what a niche is, just go to a store that sells magazines. The majority of magazines represent niche markets. What do magazines represent? They feature topics that you partake in and/or that you enjoy. These topics are all niches.

All of us are involved with at least 3 niches everyday. We all wear shoes, pants or bottoms, and shirts or tops. These three pieces of clothing are all niches. So when you look at a magazine rack, what do you see? You see magazines about the automobile niche, the fishing niche, the cosmetics niche, the travel niche, the Do It Yourself niche, the gardening niche, and on and on.

WHAT I FOUND READING MY MAGAZINE

In reading my latest Outdoor Life magazine I came across an article on the top 10 best fishing kayaks for those who like to fish on lakes and rivers. I said, I am going to write my next website blog about how to make money in the fishing kayaks niche. I then went to Google and did a search for Fishing Kayak Affiliate Programs. I found a great program from a website called Outdoorplay.

Being that fishing kayaks cost in the high hundreds and even over a thousand dollars, with an 18% commission, one could make some good money in this focused sub niche of fishing. But while on the Outdoorplay website I saw a niche market I personally enjoy, Camping and Hiking. As is seen in the above picture there are 37 sub niches to the camping and hiking niches

Just from doing a simple 10 minute search from reading an article in a magazine and then searching Google for an affiliate program on fishing kayaks, I found 37 sub niche ideas in another outdoor niche. So if you are having trouble finding a niche, go to the store and buy a magazine that appeals to you.

Then starting looking through the magazine and when you find a topic that interests you, go to Google and type in the name of that interest followed by the words Affiliate Program. Then click on the results of your search and look at the items sold by those websites. You have now found some great niche ideas within your niche interest.

Finding a niche is not hard at all. You are involved with many different niches everyday. The reason many have problems finding a niche is that they do not realize exactly what a niche is or they try to find a niche based on profitability or both. Just go and buy a magazine in a niche you enjoy and see what you can find. It's not hard at all.

What a great way to find resources to research, Robert. Since I live in a state that Amazon.com doesn't recognize, I must find other alternatives to be affiliated with. Just by looking through a magazine that I am passionate about I probably will find dozens of sub-niches to research. I am a member of World-Wide-Brands which may help me find alternate routes to commissions.
thank you, Robert, for sharing.

When looking through the magazine for sub niche ideas also research any websites listed if relevant to your desired niche. Some of these websites could very well have their own affiliate programs.

As for Worldwide Brands, yes they can also help in finding other avenues of online revenue. I am a member too and it is an amazing platform and free drop shipping tool.

Though you would get better rankings if you make your page and post titles mention your relevant keywords, you can make them anything you like.

Check your competition and do your research and it could be a great idea :) Maybe watch Jays live training tonight at 8 pm est he is going to show folks how he picks his niche sites.

I think that CBD oil is one of those new and upcoming niche markets that has the chance of being really HUGE, especially with the many clinical studies showing its medicinal benefits.

I know if my The Free Cancer Cure website was an affiliate marketing website and not just an information and teaching website, I would definitely affiliate with a CBD oil company.

Great article. I think we complicate things to many times. As you alluded in your article, many niches are right under our noses. Thanks, again. Gary

You are welcome Gary. I am happy you liked my post. Yes, I agree that many people complicate the process of finding a niche when there are niches all around us.

leoemery Premium
In Canada we have a store called Chapters, been using that place as a resource for years - you can bet if they spend the money making a monthly magazine you can be sure it's a profitable niche.

Plus the magazine itself a great source for content in that niche.
Reply
Garyfreeman Premium
Very good point. In northern Maine, we have some outdoor stores that are 'niche heavy.' As you pointed out Leoemery, if they're spending $$$ on a monthly mag, then it's a profitable niche.
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
I fully agree with you Leo. A monthly magazine is a great indicator of a profitable niche and it is also a great way to help in the content creation for that niche.

Pretty much most of the research of that niche will be in the magazine. I know it is helping me in the creation of my most recent website post.
