Having Fun With Adult Toys - It Is Not What You Think

As affiliate marketers we have an absolutely huge niche market to choose what we wish to promote to earn passive income for many years to come. It is very easy to get lost when choosing a niche because one person may think differently about a niche than you do. An adult toys affiliate program is a prime example. Let me explain.

ONE WORD MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE

When you read the title of this post did you think of having fun with adult sex toys or fun toys that adults engage in? In most cases the definition of the word "toy" is "an object for a child to play with." But there are plenty of toys that are meant for adults that have nothing to do with sex or child's play.

I like Wikipedia's initial definition of the word Toy. "A toy is an item used in play, especially one designed for such use." Why am I fixating on a definition of the word toy for adults that has nothing to do with sex? Because there are plenty of profitable niches in toys meant for adults. I'll give you some examples.

But first, look at that picture above. That is the back half of the Absolute Entertainment, Inc. headquarters where I used to work. Though 95% of what we created were video games, we did dabble in a few entertainment hardware devices. When you get down to what video games are, they are a form of adult toy, played mostly by 71% of adults.

Not only did we create many games for adults to play at Absolute Entertainment, but several of us employees had other types of adult toys to play with during our down time. When I started with the company in 1988 it was just a small business in a basement office. I was employee number 3.

We grew really fast. In two years by 1990 we moved to a bigger office 3 miles away that was able to hold 25 people, with several others working from home. I don't remember the name of it but we created our first adult toy which was an indoor electric putting game for golfers. We were also thinking of creating a newer version of Pivot Pool.

But the video game industry was exploding and that was our main source of income. Our bread and butter. Then two years later in 1992 we moved into the corporate headquarters office building in New Jersey you see above which housed up to 80 employees with 40 more in our San Francisco west coast office.

ADULT TOYS FOR PLEASANT DISTRACTION

It is no secret to those who know me that I have a sense of humor and like to find ways to make people have fun, especially in a work type of environment. One of the most important departments in any type of industry that create products for consumers to use is Quality Assurance.

If the product is not rigorously tested it can be catastrophic for the profitability of the company as a whole. I was the manager of the QA department and there were plenty of days when we would work 11 or 12 hours. I had to find ways to motivate my workers and keep their minds focused on what needed to be done.

How did I do this? How did I give them that zing of pleasure that made them enjoy spending 12 hours doing their often times boring repetitive job? I gave them some adult toys to play with, and not the ones we were creating for others to play with. I preferred using the types of toys that required more of a physical reaction than mental.

Toys R Us was our biggest customer. I remember representatives from their Wayne, NJ headquarters coming to our HQ in Upper Saddle River, NJ to brainstorm a video game idea for the then popular competitive sport of Paintball. I thought to myself, that would be a great distraction for my workers. But how and when would we play?

Because we had a great working relationship with Toys R Us, all Absolute Entertainment employees were given a 30% Off Discount Coupon for any one-time purchase from their stores. So one night after work I took my entire QA department to a nearby Toys R Us and we each purchased Nerf Guns and ammunition.

Human Resources had already labeled me as Happy Hour Coordinator because I used to plan company happy hours at local bars and pubs every first Friday of the month. This became so popular that the company would mention it in the employment literature they would send out to people they wanted to come and work for the company.

Now what started as a Nerf gun "capture the flag" competition for me and my QA staff every last Friday night of the month, became another company wide activity. It’s a gratifying experience after a long stressful week, to be able to shoot your boss a couple of times. Of course no one gets hurt. The Nerf ammo is made of hard foam.

The Absolute Entertainment HQ office was huge and the battle used every available area. We had 24 offices, two reception areas, a creative lab consisting of 36 cubicles, a lunchroom, a conference room, an audio/video studio, a tech services lab, an art studio, and my QA lab, all on one floor. Lots of places to hide and defend.

ADULT TOYS FOR OUTDOOR FUN

When the weather was warmer the company owners would have a yearly cookout and softball game at a nearby county park. Not all of us could play There were too many of us. So I organized an RC (Radio Control) car and truck races in one of the big parking lots that were empty during working hours on a weekday.

I was very much into RC racing back then and used to compete for cash and prizes in local off-road racing events. This kind of adult toy is more expensive than Nerf guns but just as enjoyable when it comes to competition. There were these two female employees that raced. Sweet as can be, but don’t get in their way on the race track. lol

Many things radio-controlled can be considered as an adult toy, though another person may call it a hobby. But the act of RC Racing is a hobby. The cars and trucks used in the races are the actual toy, with a majority of the ones you build being for adults only. RC vehicles pre-made are normally meant for a much younger crowd.

Though many people think of video game players to be kids 18 years and younger, the majority are adults. Same is true for RC. Below are several other popular adult toys.

  • RC Drones
  • Paintball Guns and Gear
  • Model Railroading
  • Go Karts
  • RC Gas Powered Aircraft
  • Lazer Tag
  • Super Detailed Lego Model Kits

Adults like to play too and having fun with adult toys is one way of doing so. Now stop it! Put that dirty mind at ease. The kinds of adult toys I have mentioned in this post are kind of pricey, too expensive for most parents to buy for their kids. But the adults should not have problems laying down significant cash for these kind of toys.

The toys niche is huge because there are toys for toddlers. toys for young boys / girls, and toys for adults. Everyone regardless of age likes to play with toys. If you choose toys as your niche narrow it down to age and/or gender. Then choose a type of toy and go from there. The older we get the more expensive the toy and the commission.

Thanks a lot for sharing on this insightful and potential niche direction. Will give deep thought to having a niche for my own business in this area as my online business efforts developers.
Thanks for your time.
Cheers.

You are welcome David. There are many expensive toys that adults like to play with and as such, they can payout higher commissions.

Hey there Robert, when I first saw the title...I was like...uh oh! Then remembered reading your profile about the quality side and an incident you explained. My thoughts changed to...this is gonna be good (as in clean...and exceptional as well). You definitely did not disappoint!!

I really enjoyed this as I do with all your posts...it was very educational as well...

As a side note, I grew up about a half hour from Wayne, NJ!!

I wish you the best!

Bob

Yep! My creative side was like, what kind of relevant but eye-catching title can I use to explain a niche in toys meant for mostly adults. Then a light bulb went off and I said ADULT TOYS! But I knew I had to add the disclaimer "It's Not What You Think."

I am happy you enjoyed my story about the kinds of toys I and many other adults like to play with. Many of them can have high commission payouts because they are high priced items. - So where did you grow up in NJ?

Well, mostly the small town of Ringwood... near Greenwood Lake. I left there when I joined the Air Force in Nov ‘83.

Hawthorne before that and West Paterson the first two years of my life...lol.

I know where every single one of those places are. With the exception of Greenwood Lake, I go to places or drive through the others at least once per month. Did you know that West Paterson is now called Woodland Park?

Greenwood Lake is a lake that stretches between NY and NJ. Hewitt is on the southern end of it on the west coastal side of the lake. West Milford is to the east of the lake. I have heard of Woodland Park, just didn't know that was West Paterson renamed.

I have two brothers that live in the Cupsaw Lake area of Ringwood still and me in South Carolina where I am much happier with the cost of living and more conservative views. Oh, and one more brother in Vegas...actually Henderson, Nv.

So, I still hail from NJ even though if you and I ever met up, you wouldn't know it if you heard me speak. LOL!!

I have a friend who used to live in Teaneck, which is where I grew up, he now lives in Hewitt. I have yet to visit him because he is hardly ever home. He is a professional drummer who travels the world playing with various bands.

I am the only one of four siblings that has stayed in Bergen County, NJ. After living in South Jersey for many years, one of my sisters went from Burlington, NJ to Alpharetta, GA and the other from Sewell, NJ to Asheville, NC. I have another sister in Southfield, MI.

Eventually I too will move down to the Asheville, NC area. It is beautiful in the Blue Ridge Mountains and I like the area. But for now I am still enjoying being in an area rich in Revolutionary War history and being less than 15 minutes away from NYC.

That’s awesome. So we are both from a family with a sibling group of four.

Asheville is a beautiful part of the state. Then again I am not so sure if I’ve seen a bad area in NC at all. Even the metropolitan areas are clean and don’t show the effects as much from the dense population in those areas.

The mountains of NC and Tn are rich with southern history much like the area I’m from. So, you like history in general? Or just Revolutionary history? I enjoy all historyt. That was one thing I didn’t realize when I lived there, but now wish I could do more visiting of the revolutionary sites.

Ringwood manor state park has a little bit there to see. Have you been there, yet? It isn’t much but is still a small piece of history.

I like history in general but Revolutionary War history is my favorite, probably because of this area and the battles that took place nearby.

Yes I have been to Ringwood Manor as well as Skylands Manor across the way. I have also hiked many of the trails in Ringwood including the Cannonball and parts of the Appalachian Trail in NY.

Yet there is still much I have yet to see here.

There is a lot to see up there isn’t there? I hope you see it all by the time you move from there...enjoy!

An amazing post @ boomergp08. I'm glad they are people like you and who work in the field of adult games software. I just got an idea because of your post.
I am very happy about your ideas.

Ioan

That is awesome! This is why I share my ideas to the community, to help inspire people to come up with niche ideas.

You are perfectly right

Thank you.

I'm glad there are people like you here at WA, well-trained people who offer their help to those who want to learn something real and from which we have a lot to learn.

Ioan

Information. Funny and well written. Excellent piece

Thank you. I am happy you liked my post.

I always like reading your posts - they are full of detail - great. This is a really interesting one as I am looking at the third career or retirement niche and narrowing it down. Hadn’t thought of toys for this group - thanks for the inspiration!

You are welcome. One thing that people in retirement have is extra time for themselves. Some travel, some do crafts, and some play with toys for adults.

Thanks Boomer for the share. But I don't have initial knowledge of the toy games. But I love playing them when I have time

You are welcome. Like all niches, if you like using the products you can better promote them than the products you do not have knowledge in and would have to learn.

Nyc idea Sir!! Thank you:)

You are welcome.

Hey Boomerpg, what would you suggest I promote regarding my niche which is video games and video game tech, I've promoted video games, consoles, video game items etc. But what would suggest to this regard to give me an edge?

Have you tried promoting Smartphone VR? This is an area in gaming that is still in its infancy but will continue to grow.

Thanks for the advice Robert, are there any sites that have affiliate programs where I could promote the Smartphone VR?

You are welcome. I would assume any website that sells smartphones and video games like Amazon, Best Buy and others would sell these. You would have to research it.

Cool, I'm all over it Rob, thanks again; I appreciate the suggestion

My pleasure.

You got me I was first like euh what adult toys, but when I saw it was a post from you I know right away it would have some good info. What a good suggestion for some nice niche. So many good niche so little time need to choose the right one.
Thanks for sharing
Tommy

HaHa. Yeah, you know me. Use a title to capture their attention that is still relevant to the topic and then provide helpful information. Similar to my weekly WA blogs I used to write called Learning & Laughter.

Like you said, so many good niches, so little time. Since I cannot do these niche ideas because of limited time, I share the ideas with the community for those who maybe struggling to find a niche of their own.

Excellent post Boomer! Really nice way to use adult toys in an appropriate way! and so many innovations you did while you were working in the mentioned company! I wish I was working there :D

Thanks! I like to find ways to get people to read certain topics that can seem like one thing but mean something totally different. Yes, working for the video game company was a REALLY fun time in my life. If I could do it all over again, I would.
