Google Search Engine Guidelines - How to Get Good SERP

Yup! It’s time for another teaching blog post by yours truly, Robert aka boomergp08. So what is on the teaching agenda for this blog post? Google search engine guidelines, which can help you to shape and create the content for your websites and blogs without upsetting Google and thus having your rankings tank. So let me give you the 411 on some of the ways to get good SERP (Search Engine Results Page). But first my mistake that I have learned from.

I made some mistakes and didn’t follow some of these guidelines on my first website and for the longest time my pages were not being ranked well. This is because I was writing them with the hopes of having them recognized by Google. I have since gone back and re-written much of the content and re-indexed them into Google to get them to start ranking.

I made the same mistake that many of you have or are making with your website content, I created it with Google in mind and not my readers. Let me be clear. I did write my content for my readers but I also used many ways to get Google to notice my content through the improper use of keywords and back linking. Basically I didn’t construct my content the correct way, even though it had a lot of valuable and engaging content.

HOW TO PLEASE GOOGLE

It is very simple to please Google. All you have to do is to remember one major fundamental action and then follow some guidelines. But first the one major fundamental action. STOP CREATING CONTENT THAT IS DESIGNED TO GET RANKINGS THROUGH KEYWORDS!

What do I mean by STOP? I mean you should always have in the back of your mind this question when you write content – Does this content satisfactorily answer the questions of my readers? You should STOP asking yourself – Is my content keyword dense enough for search engines to like it?

You have heard it before from Kyle, Carson and many other members here, including myself, that all you need to do is place the keywords in the title and in the first paragraph. Then after that you do not concentrate on putting any more keywords into your content and you just write “naturally”. Too many people are always thinking about how they can create their content so the search engines can highly rank it. If that is how you think when you create your content, do you know what will happen? There’s a high probability that your content will not rank highly at all, even if you are using keywords with a low competition or QSR value.

WHAT DOES GOOGLE WANT TO SEE

When you go to a website to search for information, do you want to read the information and feel like the person who created the content is trying to force you into buying from them? Do you feel like someone trying to buy a used car and the used car salesman is trying his hardest to convince you to buy a car you do not want? Well that’s how I feel when I visit some websites. I see this many times when I visit many of the websites being created by many of you members who are creating Affiliate Marketing websites in Boot Camp.

All too often when I review a Boot Camp website that a member will ask for comments on I’ll also look at the other pages of their website. I do this because too many of you make the big mistake of putting WA banners and affiliate links within the content of every page or post on your website. That is a HUGE MISTAKE and Google will not rank your website highly if you do this. Kyle tells us so in the training and Google says so themselves within their Webmaster Guidelines, see link at the bottom of this blog post.

Google wants to see the same thing that any visitor that comes to your website wants to see, fresh and informative content that engages the reader and doesn’t make them feel like they are being hustled into making a purchase. Yes you want your reader to purchase from you but you don’t want to force it down their throats on every page or post on your website. Instead offer some relevant stories, some product comparisons, some personal reviews, some humor, some personality, some pizazz, and get your reader to think about what they are reading by engaging them through questions. Do you want to read lines and lines of information with an upsell every 2 or 3 paragraphs? I know I do not, what about you?

Creating content in this way is a pure dead end. You should always think of your reader first when writing your content. What is a great way to do that? Put yourself in the shoes of your reader and write your content in a way that answers the questions that the reader is seeking. Build trust with your readers, create a following and eventually Google will show its love and start to rank you highly. This will in turn increase your traffic and eventually will convert into sales. But if you are thinking that you can just slap together a website with loads of content and expect to make sales right away, you are sorely mistaken. That is not how it works. Making hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars online in internet marketing WILL NOT happen in the short term. You will have to continue to work, create, build, write, and update your website for YEARS before you can hope to see those kind of dollar amounts. If you are willing to put in the time, effort and work then you will see profits like that.

THE GOOGLE DOS AND DON’TS OF QUALITY GUIDELINES

Google specifically tells you what you should and should not do in their Search Engine “Quality” Guidelines, which you can read at the link below, but here is just a brief recap.

·Create your pages for your readers and not for the search engines

·Don’t try to trick your readers by using a low competition keyword that doesn’t apply to what your webpage is about

·Don’t try to enhance your content to game the search engines in order to boost rankings like adding multiple low competition keywords within your content

·Create unique and fresh content that makes it stand out among others in your same niche

·Avoid automatically generated content, link schemes, cloaking, sneaky redirects, hidden text or links, doorway pages, scraped content

·Do not participate in Affiliate Programs without adding sufficient value, do not use loading pages with keywords that are irrelevant, do not create pages with installed phishing, viruses, Trojans, or other malicious software

·Do not take advantage of the rich snippet markups and don’t send automatic queries to Google

As Google states in the link below, “If your site violates one or more of these guidelines, then Google may take manual action against it. Once you have remedied the problem, you can submit your site for reconsideration.”

Google also tells you other good practices that will help to keep them happy which are:

·Keep a close eye on your website and remove all hacked content as soon as possible

·Prevent and remove all user-generated spam as quickly as possible

The “Quality” guidelines I have listed above are just the tip of the iceberg and you should really visit the link below to get a better understanding of what many of them mean. In addition to the Quality Guidelines, scroll up the page and review Google’s description on “Technical Guidelines” and “Design and Content Guidelines”. You should also watch the brief video by Michael Wyszomierski of Google’s Search Quality Team where he touches on Syndicated Content, Affiliates, and Doorway Sites.

So you want to REMEMBER – FORGET about creating your content that is geared towards pleasing the search engines but instead will please the readers of your website. Your website is for the benefit of your readers first and foremost and if you lose sight of that then you will NOT rank well in Google. If you have any comments, please leave them below. Thank you so very much for your wonderful and informative information! You are helping all of us so much! Kudos to you!

You're welcome Sharon. I enjoy helping the WA community because the community helped me so much to get me to where I am now. It's only right to follow Kyle & Carson's advice and to "Pay It Forward" with the knowledge I gain that can help others who are where I once was.

Sounds very professional and possible. I'm very thankful for this informations.

Thank you Joze, I'm glad you found the information helpful.

Thank you Robert. This is excellent advice. If you get a moment would you mind taking a look at my website? I put a few banners and one link on it (only 3 merchants accepted me) and want to make sure it's still reader appealing. Thanks! Www.savedwedding.com

You're welcome Amanda. I'm glad you found my blog post useful.

As for your website:

Your content is laid out well except it seems to be a little short. You should make your webpage content a little longer. I try to do a minimum of 500 words. For me that's not a problem because I'm someone who likes to talk a lot. LOL

You also do not have enough pages on your website. Can I assume that you are still in the process of adding more pages and posts? Not counting the About Me and Privacy Policy pages you should never have less than 12 pages/posts of content if you want to start seeing Google take notice of you as well as some affiliates. So in addition to making your existing content pages longer you will need to add more pages and posts.

Fortunately you have all of your affiliate links on one page (your Gifts page), that's good! That's what you want, to centralize them all on one page. Yes you do have a text affiliate link on your Invitations page but that should be okay if it remains the only affiliate link on that page.

I would suggest that as you move forward, if there is an affiliate link that you want to include that is relevant to your entire site that is not a gift or invitation, you should add it to your right sidebar so that it will appear on every page. Google doesn't mind a couple of affiliate links appearing in the sidebar, as long as they are relevant to your niche.

Thank you Robert!! I greatly appreciate you taking a look at it for me. I'll add some pages and posts, and look for a side banner. Thanks!!

No problem Amanda.

Hello Robert.. It is one of your best posts for me here. Even I have already known some of the Google rules about ranking, I enjoyed reading about it. Now, I confirmed one more time that I do write my content following Google QUALITY GUIDELINES. I manged only my first post on the main page to be ranked on 1st Google and 1st Yahoo pages. However, I am not lucky with rest of my posts and pages. It seems that it does take a lot of time to become recognized and rewarded my Google. The toughest part is not to give up on your way to success.

Exactly Tanya, never give up! I too do not have all of my pages ranking highly in Google, yet I am very happy for the ones that are rank on pages 1-5 because I know that my writing works. Plus I see the results from the increased traffic that I'm getting. Nothing great and worthwhile in life comes quickly and most everything takes time, dedication and hard work. That's the mindset people need to have if they want to make it big in the future.

Thanks for your comment and I'm glad you enjoyed my blog post.

Wow...no doubt, if you´re writing in such a way on your website, you for sure will see those kind of dollars....:-):::THANK YOU SO MUCH!

You're welcome Janine, I'm glad the information was useful to you.

Hi Robert, very good advice again. I have book marked your earlier post about this subject and read it every other day. In the meantime I have 3 posts that rank on Page 1 and 2 in Bing/Yahoo and one that ranks on page 1, pos 9 in Google. "is affilorama legit". search term

Thanks again for your thoughtful and helpful posts.
Root for the Hawks, will you?
John

Thank you John, I'm glad they and this blog are helpful to you.

I'll tell you the truth. I am 60% leaning towards the Seahawks winning the SB because I like Richard Sherman and Coach Pete Carroll, both are class acts. But I'm also leaning 40% towards the Broncos because I like Peyton Manning and would like to see him win one more SB before he retires. Either way I am hoping it will be a good close game and not a blowout.

The only thing I am not looking forward to is driving to my friends house to watch the game because I have to pass right by the stadium to get to his house (MetLife Stadium is between my house and his house) and I already know the traffic is going to be bad with many of the major roads closed down for security reasons. That means I have to drive 20 minutes out of my way and hope everyone else is not going the same way I am going. - Enjoy the game John!

thanks boomer, great information, learned some good lessons here. I will revisit this posting again as I learn more.

You're welcome Cody and please do revisit my blogs. I try to post mostly blogs that have some sort of educational value for the creation of our websites here at WA. So yes, please do revisit and enjoy.

Thanks Robert, Very useful information.

You're welcome Rick. I'm glad you found it useful.

Robert, as always, a great informative post and you make it sound user friendly. Sometimes I read the Google Rules and they are a blurr.... You break it down and I thank you! You rock WA and we are happy you are here to help us all.... Terri

Wow! With kind words like that Terri you are going to expand the circumference of my head, I'll have to get a bigger hat. LOL

I'm glad you enjoyed the knowledge I was trying to convey.

thank you as I am quite new this is useful to know

You're welcome Cathy. Glad it was helpful to you.
