How many articles can you write in a day?

This is a question asked by Veronica on Day 4 of the 'Writing Challenge' that she has been running inside WA over the last week.

The question in itself isn't a challenge. She's interested that if she has a day free form her family and other external distractions how many articles could she reasonable write in a day.

I replied 15. I'm expecting her to reply to me - that I'm either bonkers or a genius. I promise you I'm neither, so let me explain myself a little further.

Anyone can write an article

You just have to put pen to paper (or your fingers on a keyboard - or talk into voice activated software. No excuses - just try it.

Anyone can improve their writing skills

You can do this through reading and learning about article writing (and putting what you've learned into practice, reading what other people have written and by writing regularly.

Anyone can find topics to write about

I know people sometimes struggle to find things to write about but you can find ideas all over the place - related to your niche. Google alerts, google news, forums, other blogs, people's comments, twittersearch ....

Anyone with practice can write an article (400 words) in approximately 20 minutes

The word practice is key here. No you're unlikely to do this immediately but with practice you can decrease the time it takes to complete an article. I know because it used to take me more than 8 hrs. I work with a timer and i the past I've taken part in timed writing challenges. Writing articles at speed doesn't mean you should compromise on quality.

Anyone can 'work smart'

If you're going to be writing articles regularly then you need to work smart. Don't do keyword and other research for 1 article. plan it and write it. This is far too slow. Do your research for a series of related articles - it's a much quicker and more efficient way of working.

Anyone can get an article published to an article directory

Read the publishing guidelines of the directory you're posting to and apply them. If you're posting to your own blog there's no issue - but don't compromise on quality just because there's no one moderating your work.

Is 15 articles in a day really possible?

It is for me - but that's because I'm an experienced article writer and writing is my passion so much so - that I now run writing courses to help people develop their article writing skills. I don't write on a single topic - I write about lots of different things - in fact anything that interests me.

Sadly I don't have many days when I can write all day - (because writing isn't my job) I wish I did. On most days my writing is very good, on the odd day outstanding and very, very occasionally I produce something which I'm very pleased with - but I still have a huge amount to learn.

And I will improve because I PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE

How many articles can you write in a day?

As many as your experience and time allows.

Enjoy your writing!

I hate writing and only seem to bang out 4 at the most on a really great day. I've always been more of a reader and spend hours looking at code and figuring that out. The best way for me to start my writing imagination flowing is to just watch the news because it makes me so mad at times I could probably write forever.

Everyone has their preferences. I enjoy writing but looking at code is not my idea of fun! However we can all learn a bit more about the things we're less keen on. If you find that you can write best by starting with using your imagination then that's the way to go. Good luck

Beverley

Great advice Beverly. I agree that a couple of essentials are the timer so that you stick to the plan and do your research in bulk will give you enough inspiration for a week of articles. Then just do it! A less than perfect article that is published in much better than an unpublished half written perfect article. At the end of the day people who scan on the internet scan they rarely read every word...............

Thanks Gai
Only 16% of people attempt to read content word for word which is pitifully small. I always use lots of subheadings in my writing. It allows people to skim read more easily. Plus I find it quicker to write in that style.

I agree with you there. Articles and posts are a lot easier to write if you have multiple sub-headings. I managed to knock out a 900 word article when I did that when I was only aiming for 400-500 words

Thanks, nice blog, I wouldn't mind giving it a try sometime, as you say practice , practice, practice. I would have to have my little note book I carry everywhere with me. This is where I jot down thoughts thru out the day to give me a little kick start when I set down to write. Take care

Well I shouldn't start with 15, but it's not difficult to build up. You only have to start! And if you're wondering what to write - just write for pleasure.

The most I have ever written is 20 and that was in 6 hrs.
But most of the time I write reviews which are between 500 and a 1000 words long.
I can knock up an article in about 15 minutes without any problems.

But it isn't how many you can write or how fast that matters.
It just depends on what you are creating the content for.

If you are rubbish at writing but good at talking then create video's, they rank just as well!

Neil

I agree with you Neil.

My comment was in response to Veronica's question about how many articles could be written in a day.

And however many you write - the quality matters.

Beverley

Hello Beverley,
If I have to choose between the two options I think you are a genius!

I think with practice, no distractions and that 1 day goal of 15 articles that it is doable. I think you outline it very well in this post how it can be done. It might take 15 hours to do it.
One of the big pieces in the IM biz is content, creating content on a regular basis is very important for online success. So my goal is now to write 15 articles in one day... have to find a day when it is doable :)

Thank you Beverley for another great post,
Veronica

Thanks Veronica.

As I say when I have a lot to do - I plan it very well. It's a bit mechanical and if you're not careful it can take the joy out of it. But I always plan more than I intend to do and if I suddenly think I need a change of direction I have it ready.

You'll soon write more.

Beverley

Hi BIS, have you considered those whose first language is not English? I love to write and wanted to practice in a definite way. I am always tense with the quality of the writing and I think I need some good guide in grammar specifically for writing. Can you add any? Have a nice time.

Hi
Yes - I'm a trained language teacher so I'm very aware of the impact on anyone who has gaps in their technical knowledge of English. This can apply to some people whose first language isn't English as well as to some native speakers.

If there's no resources in the training area - you can always put in a request. If you really need additional help you need to look at what's available specifically for article writing and grammar skills on the net.

Beverley

Thank you. I think it clears the problem I had. Have a nice time.

Hi,

Don`t let it stop you from writing though. English is my second language as well and in the beginning writing in English was a big hurdle for me.
I know I make tons of mistakes, probably a whole lot just in this post :), but I have overcome the "fear" of writing.

I realize that my content will not be perfect but that is ok. I will not let that stop me from being successful online. Don`t let it stop you either.

Veronica

Veronica
That's good advice. English is my first language and I make lots of mistakes despite having qualifications in language teaching. When I write articles - I often address the 'grammar' issue and say it doesn't have to be perfect. The purists are always furious but the fact is - lots of people don't notice grammar errors until they interfere with understanding.

Beverley

Wow Veronica,

I never would have guessed that English was a second language for you. What is your native language?

Veronica's first language is American, so her command of English is all the more remarkable. V.'s also fluent in Wiccan and speaks basic Swedish which obviously has no practical use whatsoever. :P

Haha Richi Rich is partly right :)
I was born and raised in Sweden so Swedish is my native language. Moved to the US about 6 years ago, English is my second language "American" my third. :)

Hi Beverley. I love the way you're able to break down information into small, easily digestible chunks. Very helpful, as usual. But 15 articles in a day? Wow. I 've never considered myself a good writer, and always shied away from that chore. Now that i joined you all on Veronica's challenge, i have forced myself to write because I was held accountable. I've come to not hate article writing and in time may even enjoy it. I joined the 30 day challenge at SA, so I'll get lots of practice. Thanks for always sharing valuable tips.
Lisa

Thanks Lisa - glad you enjoyed it.

As I said in my blog in response to 'How many articles can you write in a day' "As many as your time and experience allows". Yes I can write that many but that's because I love writing and I'm very experienced.

All people can do is keep on learning and practicing and it's clear you've already adopted that attitude. Being held accountable really helps. That's where I started taking part in lots of challenges.

Enjoy the 30 day challenge. I've done that too, but it wasn't until my second attempt that I succeeded.

Have fun with it.

Beverley

Hi , first read of the day and a good one. Article writing is a chore at times and I too have to learn how to utilize my.time better to produce better quality and quantity articles.

Thank you. Even though I love writing even I find a chore sometimes which is why i constantly try and improve the way I organize my writing activities.

hey beverley - I just logged on this morning and found this - is writing articles the same as writing content for your website? I need help with this as I dont know where to start - you run classes for this outside of WA?

Hi - it's very similar. You can find quite a lot of information on article writing within WA. Yes I've just started to run courses.

And you are based in West Yorkshire? Myself and my family are hoping to move to Harrogate - are you anywhere near there. Are your courses for article writing for IM?

Yes. I live outside Bradford - so not far from Harrogate. I'm starting with IM courses and I shall be adding other things as it grows.

Fantastic - well I will certainly keep that in mind. In the meantime I will try to learn as much as I can ........

I think this needs sacrifices. I'll be back as soon as I've found Luke. Oh, and a very, very sharp quill. R. x

Yes - it does and believe me I don't have time for many 15 articles/day

Boo Princess!

Speaking of writing, I have been slacking on my writing. Been extremely busy with family for the last week... Moving houses etc. I have one post for my site drafted. Just needs some SEO and images then that's good to go I've even written the next 2 pieces at work today... It's been that dead today. Just need to type them onto the 'puter.

Looking forward to your future courses Beverley. I need to improve my articles, probably just the lack of practice. I'm getting the views, but not the conversions. CTR is at 1.48% at the moment... Want higher than this!

Hi Luke. Not surprising your writing has taken a back seat. My writing courses that I run is something I'm doing outside of WA. They're not free!

Quit complaining, Luke. I can't help it if Diva B.'s got a touch of the Aztecs. It's in a good cause. Mine. Now hold still while I offer up your still beating heart. R.x ps. The writing courses aren't available on WAU, they're Premium Premium. You also have to submit a sample of your best writing for evaluation and book well in advance to reserve a place. I'm pretty sure there are three people ahead of you who want Beverley's undivided attention after me. :P

Well I enjoy reading your materials here Beverley. So good luck with your "Premium Premium" courses :)

Thanks Luke. Just ignore him. By the way you can write!
