Watch out for this IRS scam

I received a robot call at 5am this morning.

“The IRS has filed a lien against your assets. Call xxx-xxx-xxxx to resolve this situation...”

Of course, I was a bit upset, but suspicious. I did a Spokeo reverse phone search and found the phone cal was from an unlisted cell phone in some small town in Kentucky. I continued my search with “IRS Phone call lien.” and found this link http://www.cnbc.com/2015/10/28/guess-what-thats-not-the-irs-calling.html.

These calls are a very profitable scam. IRS.gov warns against it.

The IRS will communicate with you by letter, but they never makes phone calls. I receive these kind of calls at least once a month. Usually it is a robocall. Occasional it will be from a very abusive individual. I usually play along, never giving any personal information, and end up asking if they would like to create a legitimate income where they would not have to make a living hurting people. I then refer them to my website.

I have a hard time understanding why people are willing to take a job where they hurt people rather than help. But then we have a major candidate for office who has made a career out of hurting people.

Don’t fall for this scam. At WA we help each other. It is what makes WA family.

What scams have you fallen for? Even better what scams have you avoided. What research did you do to findout that silver spoon was made out of tin. Share your story. It will help other WAers avoid similar scams.

I've broken my reviews on my business website down into three sections:

  1. scams
  2. affiliate marketing
  3. MLM Networking

In my scam section I will do a review of this scam with a ''More Information" link to this WA blog.

Likewise in the UK Bill. Thankfully IRS not on our radar but the UK equivalent HMRC gets scammed daily. So we should all be on the lookout for scams of this nature.

We get our share of scam phone calls in Australia too. I usually ask them to hold the line for a minute. I might as well waste their time and hopefully save someone else in the process.

"But then we have a major candidate for office who has made a career out of hurting people."

Are political comments really necessary at WA?

A bit deep for me, this one but I think I know who you mean and I agree WA is not a political forum

I think phone calls are the worst if you are not tech savvy and especially if you did owe the tax department money...thanks for the heads up!

Our daughter-in-law got sucked into this scam, and it cost them $3,000 our of their savings account before our son called the bank. But it was too late; the first $3,000 was gone, gone, gone.

Thanks for the tip and I hope everyone pays attention!

Once a month doesn't sound so bad.
My wife says they call several times a day.
We both know that the IRS doesn't call you.
But, they wouldn't keep doing it if people didn't fall for it.

Yep same sort of scam is here in Canada.

I had some jackass call me telling me I owed all this money to the government and that a warrant has been issued for my arrest and the police would come to my house if I did not send the money to them now.

Well right out of the gate I knew this was a scam, because the government would never do that. So it's time for me to play with this toolbox.

I said really, well if that's the case here talk to my wife she's a police officer and you can get things straighten out right now regarding the warrant.

Go figure the line went dead.

Oh by the way, I'm not married and the only police officer I know is my next door neighbour adn he's was on holidays.

Unfortunately it's the elderly and the new immigrants that get caught in this scam - shameful.

Must say, they are quite innovative in thinking up new scam ways everytime

Yep....heard of this one too. The target is older and new immigrants. It's ridiculous.

Thanks for the "heads up."

I'm in the older category.

Imagine what happens when they call an elderly widow who has no computer. One of their pitch lines is, "if you hang up on me, we will have the police at your door within an hour."

I know......I would just love to do something to those "jerks" (can't use the words I want)..lol

Thanks buddy and what will they think of next eh?

They just usually recycle old and proven scams. It is common in MLM. A company will get shut down and they pop up again with the same business model under another name. They even use the same software

Yes never changing faces
