Strategic Thinking
I just blogged about why I chose to develop an internet business and actually I got ahead of myself.
Before we make a decision about what we are going to do, we have a lot of strategic thinking to do.
Most fundamental, we need to understand what we value in life and know what we want to accomplish.
Start with your vision. What do you want to accomplish in the next year, five years, twenty years.
Review your vision quarterly. What must you accomplish in the next quarter, month, week or day.
Write you mission statement. Mine is to help people use the internet to accomplish their goals.
When you know what you want to accomplish, you must develop a strategy to accomplish your goal.
Strategically, I am going to reach out to a global audience to help them understand and achieve their purpose. I will develop my own personal and financial resilience by developing a business that creates recurring income from several sources. I will show others what I am doing. My income will be generated by helping others become more resilient. I will need to establish a relationship of trust with my audience and I will build my audience using both traditional and virtual networking.
I know what is important in my life. I know what I want to accomplish and I know how I will achieve my goals. Now I know what plans I need to develop to achieve my goals. The process is documented so my team and I know what we must do.
Time to plan
Now it is time to plan how to carry out the strategy. What actions must I take to achieve carry out my strategies?
For each goal, I need to define the tasks I must complete in order to accomplish my goal. Break the tasks down into steps that can be completed in a few days. When you know what you want to accomplish and what you must do to achieve your goal you have your plan.
Where planning goes wrong is we tend to underestimate how long each task will take and we allow busy work to interfere with getting the important jobs done.
Block out time every day to work on what is important. Put a deadline on your important tasks and you will know how much time you are going to have to devote each day towards completing a specific project.
In summary:
Write out the values that are important to you.
Write you mission statement and make sure your mission is consistent with your values.
Develop a strategy to accomplish you mission
Develop a plan to implement your strategies.
Break you plan down into the steps that must be taken to implement you plan.
Set deadlines.
Block out the time every day that is needed to meet your deadlines.
Review and adjust as necessary to keep on track.
Remember to plan tasks you have control over. You cannot have a task to make $5000 a week. You can only have tasks you can complete that will contribute to making that kind of income.

Great blog Bill, I spent most of my life preparing Strategic and Operational Plans and most people have problems thinking strategically. A still remember one telecommunication company’s vision statement, which was “Linking the World through Communications.” Had they said by telephone, they would have had limited their vision. Thanks for sharing.
