Goals are your ports o call on your river of life. Trouble is most people set their goals after they have all ready set sail. In life your destination is your calling-your purpose in life. Make sure to understand the values that guide your life. If honest, loyalty and helping others are important to you, you won't take a job where you are scamming people. Your values and your purpose must be in harmony.

Why plan? Because without a plan you are up a creek without a paddle. You are drifting on the river of life with no way to maneuver throught he rapids called life.

Know your Calling

I'm a conservationist. I believe we must live sustainably. We must build diversity into our lives and maintain biodiversity in the world around us. We cannot be resilient without the passive income we need to deal with emergencies and take advantage of opportunities.

What is your calling? What values guide your life? Are you goals consistent with your values?

Accomplish your goals

When you understand your calling you know what you want to accomplish in life. When you know what you want to accomplish you can set goals that will help you accomplish your calling. When you have set your goals, break you goals down into small tasks that are measurable and have a deadline. By developing a set of tasks need to accomplish your goals you accomplish two things.

  1. You develop a strategy for accomplishing your goals
  2. You can see progress toward accomplishing your goals. That is extremely motivational.

Multi-Tasking

You gotta focus. Even if it is for half an hour, you gotta focus. When I try to multi-task I get a lot of little stuff done but end up not accomplishing anything.

By having my tasks laid out and prioritized I know what is important and what I should focus on first. By taking a five minute break to walk around and get the blood moving in the feet and in the brain you get refreshed and ready to go again. It is particularly important for us older people. Sitting at a computer all day is tough on old legs.

Check your course

It is much better to have a lot of little failures than one big one. Learn from your little failure, make a course adjustment and try again. If you don't react to a potential failure while it is small it my be to late when the failure become critical.

Conclusion

When planing your life or any project, start with your values. Know what you want to accomplish in your life. Based on accomplishing the important things in your life, develop your mission statement. Are your goals consistent with your mission? If your values are not in alignment with your purpose either your values or you purpose must be adjusted. Know how you will evaluate your progress. What do you want to accomplish in the next month, the next year and the next five years. What has to happen before you will be satisfied with your progress. Set milestones you will accomplish within a certain time.

Develop your strategy for for achieving each goal. You will have goals for your family, your work, your business. Each facit of your life will have goals, but you can only accomplish one thing at a time. Decide what the most important goals are and focus on 2 or 3 things. If you try to do to much you will get nothing done.

With your mission statement clear, set the goals that you must achieve to accomplish your mission. Break those goals down into small measurable tasks and give each task a deadline. That is your action plan, Now take your most important step. Get out your calendar and make an appointment with yourself. I will spend 2 hours Tuesday morning working on this specific task. Do not break that appointment because you have already defined it as one of the most important things in your life.

When you mark of a task as completed you know you are one step closer to achieving your goal.

Thanks for sharing, Bill.

I've been setting, tracking goal for many years. I did go through a time when my health was at its worst during which I stopped setting goals and i didnt like it one bit! I felt like a dinghy ttrying to navigate through a Cat 5 hurricane. I tried my best to make meaningful connections with my family, but having to sit out of plans and not even being able to open my eyes some days made even that impossible. It couldn't be helped, and my friends drifted away and my family bonds suffered. Thank you for this wonderfully written blog to get those who aren't setting and tracking goals get started, and reminding those who do of their importance.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Thanks for sharing your experience. Sometimes when we are going through tough times it is all we can do to go from one day to the next. Fair weather friends drift away. Real friends will man your tug boat. At 87 I have noticed that my long term goals are 5 years instead of 20.

Mine are too for the most part. I think coming so close to death so many times has tempered how I view the world. Our time here is not promised, so we should make the most of what we have!

I make plans to follow so I can accomplish them, however they are not accomplished on my timeline, lol.

Hi Mike, I notice some slipage my self.
