Hello WA:

Last Friday I came home and found out that University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) beat the overall #1 seed Virginia in the National Collegient Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament. It's the biggest upset in NCAA basketball history.

I was raised in the city of Baltimore and UMBC is on the outskirts of Baltimore in a town of Catonsville, not too far from where I was raised.

Not only they upset Virginia, but they beat them by 20 points. I was hoping that they make it to the sweet 16. They play Kansas State (K-State) in the second round. Usually when you see a upset like that, they'll get blown out in the second round because of fatigue. UMBC came from a mid major conference where K-State came from one of the best conferences in college basketball the Big 12. Virginia came from another power conference the ACC.

UMBC did not go to the tournament to lay down. They want to prove to people they can win. They beat Virginia by 20. Then they faced K-State in the second and almost beat them. They did not give up. They played their heart out til end of the game. They have this Puerto Rican who is 5-7 and about 140 pounds that hit 2 big 3s in the game. Then he almost had a 4 point play. That young man played his but off. They kept up with K-State the whole game. This guy from K-State had a putback dunk that took the momenum away from UMBC. Both of his arms was above the top of the square on the backboard. That's how high he was. I was like wow. But UMBC made it a game worth watching. That was the reason I did not do anything in the business, I wanted to see UMBC. They barely loss the game. I thought they were going to the sweet 16.

UMBC was not supposed to beat Virginia. Everybody but UMBC knew that. They did not lay down and let these power houses beat them. They went to the tournament to play some serious basketball. They loss to K-State, but they played their hearts out. I can tell that they were fatigue. I was not mad at them even though they loss. They played ball.

That's how you have to approach this business. You got to want it, even though you're fatigue just keep on going. UMBC inspired me. I learned to appreciate that because sometimes a coach would realize that team is much better, but that don't mean you lay down. You compete.

When I was in high school I played against lots of people who went to major colleges in basketball. Some of them even made it to the NBA. Even though they were much better basketball players than me they brought out the best in me. That's what I liked when I played against those guys. It was all about competition, that what I played for. UMBC did the same. Approach this business like UMBC approached Virginia and see what you get baby!!1

It's getting late. I'll see you at the top.

Roger.

Thanks for sharing Roger. I was thinking about what you said about people bringing the best out of me. It made me think that here, in WA there are some real smart cookies. I hope they can bring the best out in us. It certainly feels that way.

No problem. Sorry, it took so long to get back.

Extraordinary story! Thanks Roger for sharing !

No problem, Louisa. Sports are a great analogy for your business.

You're welcome!

Your right, Yup! You got to want it bad enough.

Yep!!!

Congrat’s on your team winning a Rog. Yes, we can learn many things from sports. Persistence and dedication tops the list as it applies to our businesses. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Jerome

Thanks, Jerome.

I agree they did play my Alma mater well. I graduated from Kansas State University in 1996 with an Accounting degree, and I admit, my heart was in my mouth a couple of times. Thanks for sharing!

Jeff

No problem, Jeffrey. Snead put that putback dunk that broke UMBC's momenum.

Thanks for reporting Big Rog. Maryland has a lot of worthy talent indeed!

No problem, Mike.

This is a GREAT lesson Rog, never back down just like UMBC. Work your business, do what needs to be done consistently, even when you don't feel like it and are unmotivated.

We all get that way sometimes, but gotta push through it to succeed. Great post!

Thanks, Kaju.
