About Belden22
Joined January 2018
My name is Rick and I am a civil engineer and love the great outdoors. I grew up in Oregon and Washington but now live in Oklahoma and look for any opportunity to get out to the mountains in New Mexico and Colorado. I am married and have two kids who also developed a love for the mountains, backpacking and hiking.

I originally wanted to be an architect and a pilot. I became a private pilot in 1988 while in the Air Force in Oklahoma City. I went on to the University of Oklahoma, after leaving the Air Force, to become a civil engineer, after changing my degree 13 times. My wife final said "No More! You need to stick with a degree program."
I have been a civil engineer in Oklahoma since 1995, designing mostly U.S. and state highways.

One of my greatest passions is getting away to the mountains where I can hike, camp out and sometimes just drive into new areas that I have never seen before.

Hi Belsen. Thank you for following me. I will be following you. I can understand about changing your degree many times I had the same challenge. Even then after I graduated I still change my career several times. But somehow, I was able to raise a family. Love this business and the possible flexibility. I had a great time in the Air Force and travel to 10 countries. Best of luck!

Welcome!

I love the woods and hiking too - we have great State Parks in New York.

But my idea of camping is $200/night and chocolates on my pillow!
Anything you say about that is going to sound like my Husband and my Dad but, go ahead.

When I was kid, my Dad used to take us for what he called a "family drive" every Sunday. It was always to somewhere new and we always stopped somewhere for dinner - could be a 5 star restaurant, could be a hot dog stand. You never knew, but it was fun as a kid, finding new places and meeting new people.

Best of luck in your new endeavor.

Try camping two nights followed by staying in a beautiful cabin or condo to help you realize the comforts you just missed out on.

LOL......that will help all of us be more appreciative.

Thanks for the follow, Rick. It's great to meet another mountain lover. I just relocated from Florida to the mountains of Tennessee and couldn't be happier. Good afternoon, Richard and thanks for adding me to your network of friends here in WA. It's a pleasure to add you to mine as well.

I also want to welcome you to WA and hope that you are still enjoying the training and the community. Awesome and Awesome.

I and my wife also love the outdoors although our version is in a travel trailer. We are hoping to get further afield than our favorite spot that's only an hour away, possibly in the mid to late summer.

I have enjoyed hiking as well but not much in the last ten years or so.

Anyway, all the best to you and your family as you continue this journey and I look forward to connecting from time to time.

You would actually be surprised at how hilly it is in southeast Oklahoma and it has a lot of Pine trees. I should also include most of far east Oklahoma.

The west is much more dry and the east get's more hilly. I wouldn't use the words mountains because I have a definite idea of what classifies as mountains as I grew up on the west coast but everyone here refers to them as mountains.

Oklahoma has a lot more variety in scenery than many people think.

Hello Richard ... thanks for the follow. So were the 13 different majors related or was there a wide swing in disciplines? I did that a little in college. Math and science were my best subjects in HS so I thought being an engineer made sense.

But I gal I was dating in college was an Education major so I swerved in that direction. I was a decent athlete in college and got a baseball scholarship. I was going to be a Physical Education teacher and baseball coach.

In the end I swung back to engineering and spent 35+ years in high tech manufacturing around Silicon Valley. Ended up with over 200 semester units when I got my BS.

Did you have some excess units when you finally got your degree?
Reply
Belden22 Premium
I did have some major swings from business to architecture to environmental science, aviation and eventually engineering.

I know I had enough for a masters degree.

Oh well, it all goes to my experience and knowledge.

I recommend you and your family go climb Mt Wheeler, the highest mountain in New Mexico. My friend and I climbed it back when we were in high school. It is a very scenic and beautiful hike all the way up. I turned 15 on top of the mountain in July and there was snow on the mountain.
A niche that you may have considered would be hiking equipment. With your expertise, you should be able to write very good articles.
I look forward to working with you and wish you much enjoyment and success in your online journey.

Good day Rick,

Nice to meet you and thank you for the follow.

Changing your degree 13 times. Hmm, you sound like me, a person that can't sit still and is into everything. I still am.

A mate of mine went to the US back in the 80's and it still sticks in my mind what he said. I am not sure how much of the US he saw but he told me Oregon was the best place he visited in the US.

Well, Rick, my best wishes go out to you and your family for both health and wealth and I will see you along the trail through WA.

Hey Brad. I'm not especially proud of all the degree changes but I am happy I stuck with it and ended up where I am today.

I agree Oregon is beautiful but I have many other states I love, like:
1. Washington
2. California
3. Arizona
4. Idaho
5. Montana
6. Colorado
7. Northeast New Mexico

You may be able to tell that all of these states have some incredible mountains and scenery.

Hope to see you down under.

Australia is a large country so if you are limited for time, the East coast is your best option. I lived in the west for 7 years and you have to travel long distances to see different things, once you get 4 hours north of Perth so time can be a problem. But down south the west does have one of the prettiest places I have been to in OZ and that is Esperance Western Australia. I surfed there once with seals swimming in the waters nearby and when I got out of the water I was informed I was having fun in the lounge room of the great white shark. LOL

I always wanted to be a pilot or an architect and I ended up becoming a civil engineer. I didn't see that one coming.

I love it here at WA and I was going great on the certification training but the slight shift in the Affiliate Bootcamp has slowed me down a little.

There is a definite difference that I haven't fully accepted or bought into yet in the bootcamp.

I would love to hear your thoughts on it.

Is there something you don't like with the Bootcamp? You may PM me if you want to explain it to me further. I'm not doing the Bootcamp as I have chosen a health niche. But perhaps I can help you anyway.

You don't have to promote WA if you don't want to. You can choose any niche and promote products and services suitable to that niche.

Hi Rick, Thanks and I have reciprocated the follow. You can learn a lot from WA but marketing needs a special kind of mindset, one that as one engineer to another (we don't have it) you need to study the masters and absorb all of their writings. So for you Youngman it's a new frontier.

So happy to see comments from someone who shares the same geographic background. I am originally from California. Lived in Oregon and Washington (and many other places over my 78 years). I too wanted to be a pilot but did not finish the course before going off to join the Army. One of my brothers was Air Force, while the other was in Army tanks. My brother who was Air Force (now retired from AF) married a woman from Oklahoma City. They now live in upper New York State. My Dad was a road builder on the backroads of northwest California, after having learned his trade in the Army in WWII. Did you know there is a Lake Belden in Texas (near Fort Hood)? Log cabin house plans
rustic wood furniture

I am actually leaning towards log cabin house plans as I love creating house plans, looking at log cabin designs and love everything to do with the mountains. I'm just not sure if this would be a good choice. My second choice would be mountain day hikes or day hiking gear.

I really liked the log cabin house plans just because that is something I love and have a great interest in. Just not sure this is a good niche.

I would appreciate any thoughts you have on this.

Thanks,
Rick

Awesome list. Your niche ideas are definitely viable directions for your niche. You need to choose one when starting out, what are you most passionate about?

When deciding on a niche and trying to narrow down to a more specific niche, I recommend you ask yourself the following question:

I want to help people that ______________.

Fill in the blank and you are going to be much closer to a specific audience. After you do this and if you want to run any further ideas by me, let me know and I will give you a hand. :)

Thank you Kyle.

I was considering one more idea. I had a light stroke in 2012 that I was able to fully recover from but there is a stroke history in my family so I am considering dietary and supplements for stroke prevention but my concern there is it better to be the health field with more knowledge to really go for that niche?

Thank you so much for the advice you have already given me. I know you are busy and I don’t want to bother you with too many questions.

Thanks,
Rick

You have some hands on experience within that space and I am sure lots of experiences and stories to share. Nobody starts off as an expert within any niche, nobody. Every expert you see out there started off somewhere and the online world and what you learn here is going to walk you through the process of becoming an expert.

Every expert surgeon started off at one point as a first year student. Every person with expertise within the online business world (myself included) started off with ZERO knowledge.

That should be exciting to you knowing that you can enter absolutely ANY niche you want and become the expert and build a full time income doing so.

Immerse yourself into your niche. People will trust you if you can offer them help and you don't have to reach the "expert" status to have a full time business within a niche.
