Its all about the links
I have mentioned numerous times that it's still (always has been and will be into the foreseeable future) all about links. Not that I need validation .... well, not most of the time anyway. But in this podcast, Gary Illyes says that it's all about links - http://marketingland.com/podcast-marketing-land-live-30-conversation-googles-gary-illyes-part-1-194202 Listen to the podcast if you want to hear him say what it's all about.
While you're listening, pay attention when he says that Google's UX people are trying to figure out how to measure brand awareness. If they are looking to quantify it, then it's a ranking factor.
It's all in the patents. No matter what kind of smoke screens they try to use to hide what they're doing, they can't hide filed or granted patents because it's public information.

Good info, we should see some rank change against these sites that have bought "crappy" backlinks to climb to the top.
Crappy backlink sites are usually have crappy content as well so win win for us WA
Links serve the purpose of interior webbing within the internet. Don't write a site without the them!
Interesting find Beau. Links are important, but they're supposed to be good links. The podcast made it clear that blackhat backlinks are done.
The part about having 50% bad links is passable is interesting though (about 8 minutes in). He said they could ignore bad links if the other half are good links. Is that what you understood from that part? I got a little confused.
Correct.. The days of crap links are done.
Its all about keep a balanced ratio. Preferably having more higher quality links that are natural.
