MySQL data bases in plain English

Hello to you all, I hope you are all still striving for success as always, here at WA

Today I am going to do another post on one of the technical aspects of websites but of course in good old plain English

So today, I will be explaining what a MySQL Database is and why you need to know about them

Some of you will already know about these things, some of you may have heard of them and some of you will probably have no idea they even exist, so I will now explain what they are and what they are used for, to do this I am going to use an analogy, lets call it this

Build a tax office in your local area

Lets say for example, that it has been decided to build a tax office for the local area to deal with tax issues, for more efficiently at a local level

So what would be needed first?, well they would need to acquire a piece of land to build it on.

IN WEB LANGUAGE THIS WOULD BE - YOUR DOMAIN NAME OR URL

URL = Unique Reference Location, the address of your site

Next they would need to build the structure of the building on the land that has been acquired

IN WEB LANGUAGE THIS IS THE HTML, WHICH WHAT THE STRUCTURE OF WEBSITES ARE BUILT WITH

HTML = Hyper Text Mark-up Language

Once the structure has been built they would need to decorate it to make it look nice

IN WEB LANGUAGE THIS IS THE CSS STYLE SHEET - YOUR THEME IS BUILT WITH THIS

CSS = Cascading Style Sheet

The next step would be to employ people and put in computers and machines so all the tasks could be carried out correctly

IN WEB LANGUAGE THIS IS CALLED PHP WHICH IS CODE THAT CARRYS OUT TASKS ON YOUR SITE

PHP =PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor

They would also need a management system

IN WEB LANGUAGE - WORD PRESS IS YOUR CONTENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

So now all is in one place, but wait there is something important missing, how do they access all the data, they need to carry out tax checks and queries, what about all those tax records, where are they kept, the tax office would need to be given access to all the tax records

SO IN WEB LANGUAGE THIS IS THE My SQL Data base, this data base holds all the records and information about your website and just like the tax office, it can not function without it

An example of this, is when someone leaves a comment on your site, they submit their name and e mail address, this information is held in the data base so when they return they are recognised by the database, as in here at WA, all out information is kept on a web data base

If your data base becomes broken your website will stop working and you will see this instead of your web page - DATA BASE ERROR

If you move your site then your data base has to come with it also, when you put a Wordpress site together a data base is created for you automatically

Just remember you are building a digital asset that might one day be worth a tidy sum, if your data base gets damaged your site will be worthless, so its worth realizing how important they are

I hope this has explained data bases for you

Wishing you all every success

Barry

Thank you! Great explanation - and in plain English as promised! :)

Good one Barry. I like the plain English approach.. my kinda language! Put's everything into easy to grasp persective.. thx Dino :~)

Thanks for sharing, Barry. Very good analogy, which helps in understanding what each part of our site is for exactly.
Best wishes :) -Sherry

bazzboy you really do have a lot of interesting information and I got to tell you easy to understand. Thanks for your time. Have a great day.

I'll go check out a video I was watching earlier by Kyle and compare it to my home page here. Sorry for putting you thru all this Barry. I'll be back in a bit.

Its no trouble, don't worry

Thanks, Barry.....

It's just below -- a couple of sections down.....do you see it?

do you mean your page at WA or your own wordpress blog

I have been to this page and it looks fine to me

did you get the link via IM, Barry?

No can you put it on this blog

Also Barry, I have 9am phone appt tomorrow with a high school fellow who will liknk into my computer to help me see with the problem is. I'm trying to DO something, not just sit on the problem, but he's not familiar with WA and what the website is supposed to look like. But hopefully he's technically savvy enough to at least help me get around the issue. But maybe you'll have it fixed before then....;) I sure do appreciate your trying.....

Ok I need the link can you send it to me

Thanks so much for this Barry. I'm sure I will be referring to this often until I'm 'at home' with it. I have IM'd Kyle b/c my WA website is nothing like his in his videos. The colored bars at the left cover up all the info I need to get to. So until I can get my real original WA website up I feel disabled with going forward b/c I don't know enough about getting my first website up and going to do it. I feel like I'm missing all the data that's hidden underneath the colored bars. But thanks so much for this. When I can use it, it'll be wonderful!

If you can be more specific, I might be able to help you fix it, can you tell me exactly what the problem is and give me a link to the site so I can look at it for you

Barry

K,Barry, that would be great. Let me figure this out. Hold on for the link. I'll send you my home page. Here:

I don't have the clear links on the left. Maybe I'm just supposed so scroll down and sneak up on them....geeeezzz, I don't know. But I just seems like tons of links are missing when I compare my home page to what Kyle has in his video examples.
