Static or Blog Home Page?

The word "static" means lacking in movement, action, or change. Baring this in mind, we can safely say that a static page is one that always stays the same and never changes location.

There are varying opinions on using a static page as the home/landing page, as opposed to blogroll page. I've had suggestions for both ways as being the best...and most appealing to Google.

Having 2 websites, I thought I'd try it out both ways. On my WA site, the home page is my blogroll. And, for my health and wellness site, I have a static home page. Each way seems to work for each of my sites in their own unique way. FYI: the static home page from my health and wellness site has been ranking on page one for WEEKS, now, and is in the second position on page one currently.

Interested to learn what you all are using as your home page and how it's working out for you...?

I agree with you Barb, one of the things I need to do with my first site is change the theme and have a static home page. I will put it on the list lol!

:)

I'd like to make my homepage a static page. Gotta figure that one out at some point ;-)

Hey Liz, I found out how to do this for my theme, yours may be the same. If you go to your theme to customise it, some where in that menu you will find home page, with a check box of static. Mine is Pure and Simple and static menu is third one down my list! Hope yours is as easy! :)

Will check it out! Thanks

yes, it's pretty easy to change by going to "appearance" and then, "customize".

Aah... interesting Barb! Congrats on ranking page 1!

thanks!

I'm still struggling just getting my website up and running in the manner that I want it to run. I've never used Wordpress and can't say that I'm a fan of it. But I'm learning.

Keep going with it, I was the same when I first started but now, the general things i can do like a pro ! The more complicated stuff I can do but need the WA walkthroughs to do it, hopefully they will become second nature to me too soon !

I think it's just a matter of getting used to something different, if you've used a different platform in the past.

An interesting experiment.

It's knew to me.I am still dense when it comes to computer language.

Congrats on your Page 1 rankings.

I would think that your question could be answered by asking what is the purpose of my site. If it is primarily blogging information then a blogroll may be optimal. If the site is primarily a commercial purpose then a static page would be best. Depending on the WP theme being used you may be able include post excerpts on the page as well.

Regards

Geoff

Sounds like you're doing something right, Barb. I'm currently stuck on Course 1, lesson 9, so can't be of much help. Learning more, day to day. :)

you'll get there, buddy!

How can you tell which one you have. I would like my about me page to be the first that pops up, but i noticed when I posted my last one its on the front page too. So i guess its on blog roll. How do you change this?

On your WP Dashboard select Settings, Reading. Options for Front Page Displays are presented. Hope that helps

click on appearance in the menu on the left. then, click customize. You can change your landing front page to a static page, there. Then, you'll need to set up the blogroll on another page. It took me a minute to figure it out on my own...I hate asking for help. stubborn like that. ha ha

I have been wrestling with this for a long time. I have several sites, and my first instinct is always towards a static home page. The blog is a biog, so a blog roll is expected. But I like my website homepage to have a welcoming, familiar feel each time someone visits. I don't think there's a right or wrong answer. But I'm looking forward to more responses on this one.

I agree, I have a welcoming front page for my website, blog roll in right side bar, with a menu of last 5 blogs. I also have a separate heading in my main menu where all my blogs can be found and now I know how to add a jump link to my pages, I can have a menu at the top of this page so readers can jump to a particular blog theyre interested in. :)

Can you do a walk-through on setting up a site this way? I think I'd like to do something similar. I know this is a big request. If you ever decide to create a training... this might be something to consider. Thanks, Helen.

I certainly will ! There are a few steps involved in doing this but nothing difficult, otherwise I wouldn't have managed it ! :) I can probably do something over the weekend, I had a regular job thats pretty busy this week so only time to come on WA and get done my daily routines but if youre interested then I will !

That would be very appreciated. I hope others would benefit, too. I'd hate to think I'm the only one who's been looking for this solution. You're awesome. BTW... no hurry..
my site looks fine for the time being.

same here. I wanted my health and wellness site to have a welcome landing page, even tho it is a blog site

excellent
