The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry--Robert Burns

It happens to all of us.

We have our plans made for the day, and in a moment's time, our best laid plans are turned upside down.

Those of you who have read my profile know that I am a musician. Even though I am retired, I sometimes still play the organ for church services. This morning I was scheduled to play for a small Lutheran church in an area outside of St. Louis, Mo. Weather service had forecast thunderstorms and heavy rain last night and into this morning. I wasn't concerned, after all what's a little thundershower in Spring?

I got there a little early-I always do in order to set up the organ and get my fingers warmed up. The church secretary met me at the door and said,"we don't have any power." The pastor came out of the church sanctuary and said, "we don't have any power." "It's going to be a little difficult to play the organ without electricity," I said.

I should also tell you that it was 40 degrees this morning in St.Louis. The sky was overcast with dark thunderclouds. There was very little natural light in the sanctuary of the church.

Some tree limbs and electrical wiring was down, which ultimately knocked out the power to a fairly large area. Nobody had any idea how long it would take to restore power.

Now, I have to tell you that having no electricity on Sunday is a big deal for a church. The organ won't work-- a piano has to be rolled out. On this particular Sunday, with no electricity, the sanctuary was cold and too dark for people to easily read the hymn book and the bulletin. And, there was no coffee for between church and fellowship, and Sunday School.

I should also tell you that this Sunday in Christendom is Palm Sunday, the Sunday Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on the back of a donkey. The children scattered palm branches along the way and shouted "Hosannah." The church could expect a larger than usual congregation.

The church was full this morning- no one went back home- the ushers found some bright little flashlights so the pastor and assistant pastor could see to read scripture and the sermon. One of the ushers who lived near by, ran home and brought back an LED lantern, so I could read the music to play the piano. The congregation managed to squint enough to read the hymns. Nobody stumbled or fell during Communion. I hit most of the right notes. It was a morning filled with laughter and joy.

Sometimes, our best laid plans don't turn out like we think they should. When that happens, as the old saying goes, we "think on our feet!" It's amazing what we can do with no warnng time.
