I personally think that MLM is a scam. I was wondering what everyone thinks. Are there instances where MLM works for everyone or is it always just the ones at the top who prosper leaving the majority of people out?

Joys comment below is correct. I am a top 1% MLM earner, got involved 14 years after the company opened in my country. It depends on the company and the person. The same question can be levelled at Affiliate Marketing .. is it a scam? Well it depends!

Cheers, William.

Wow that's something William. You are on the top. So after 14 years in your country, you were still able to get to the top.
That certainly is interesting. I am re thinking all of this. Thanks

Yes .. that would not be possible with some MLMs .. there are a wide range of MLMs and they are very different, it is like asking "are companies that retail successful?" .. are we talking about Amazon, Walmart or the mom and dad local shop. Some MLMs are set up to only last a few years and make money for the people at the top. Others are long term businesses. There is a lot of variation.

I think there are definitely companies that aren't 100% honest out there, but I do not think the entire concept of multi-level marketing is a scam. I've seen people be successful when they join a company that has been around for a long time. And on the other hand, I've also seen people fail even when they joined a brand new "ground floor opportunity-type" company. I think it requires a specific skill set that many people don't have or care to develop once they realize what's really required. And one of the biggest problems with that industry is that many people join a company and then promote it in very unprofessional ways, which does turn other people off from the whole thing entirely.

Hey Cynthia,

MLM isn't so much a scam as it is fatally flawed for those who sign up after the first two years in a new country. This post sorta' explains: https://toughnickel.com/industries/Networking-Marketing-is-doomed-to-failure-its-all-about-the-dream-not-reality

Thanks that is an interesting article and I do agree with most of it. MLM is not good for most people as 99% of them lose money. I knew this and that's why I think of it as a scam.
However, as there are some who like it and are making money, I think it depends on the company, the person and the product.

I don't think it is always a scam. I have participated in a few programs successfully and people after me are still achieving success. I think it's up to each of us to make a platform work for us and choose the one that is resonates most with us.

Thanks Joy,
I agree and am understanding that I can't lump all MLM under "Scam".
