I'm going to turn off auto-renewal for one of my sites and I was just wondering whether, if I un-publish the site before the domain runs out, will I have an intact copy of the un published website in my dashboard at WA, or will it be lost when the domain is no longer mine?

And is this the best way to save some of the work that went into it?

If there is perhaps a different domain name that you would like to be, you can always transfer the website there, which is what I did last year, Soraya!

Oh that's a brilliant idea! I'm going to import the info to a free domain as Jovo suggested and then from there I can update and tweak the posts before bringing them over to my main URL.
Great advice Jeffrey, thanks! Did it work easily?

I had absolutely no problem. I contacted Site Support with a query, and they did it FOR me, also leaving the old domain as a redirect, which is recommended for thirty days, after which, I deleted it, and the domain before it expires has been used as a test domain to experience selling a domain on Flippa! Best of luck to you in whatever you decide to do, Soraya!

You can save the complete site on a free domain and keep it.

There is a plugin for this, WordPress Importer, so if you choose the same theme and the same set of plugins, it will be identical but with the different url.

There is a YouTube video showing how to use it, I decided to remember it because it looks so easy to use and useful.

As long as it yours, and have content you can back it up. Once it expires you would lose all.

However if it is worthy why would I want to turn autorenewal off. If for some reason you do not like the domain or some other reason, you can try sell it before it expires. Just a thought.

Thanks Abie,
I hadn't thought of selling it . . . Have you sold any websites? If it isn't making money, how would I got about selling it? It has about 100 posts on it, Amazon links and Google ads but doesn't get much traffic and I don't spend any time on it. Do you have any suggestions?

You can use a plugin - WP Clone Academy to back up all data on your website. Everything will be stored in a single folder.

If the domain name expires then everything associated with it disappears. Copy and paste any content you want to keep.
