I wish I had made my site very simple from the start, as I have now learned that simple is better.

I am looking at all the categories I have created and I feel like it is just toooo much ( I have 94 categories)! I really want to simplify and get rid of some, but then I know I will end up with a bunch of "not found" errors.

Is there anyway to get rid of categories without getting 404 errors?

@Loes' last question

On the last line I said: A Post I deleted and forgot to redirect. LOL

Can you make main categories by adding a few together? Then you can point them out to these, I don't think you get 404's by switching categories

Yes, there will be 'no founds' but 'simple 301 redirects will take care of that.

Is that so? When you change the category, does that bring on no finds? I thought 404's are related to the permalinks, can you explain to me where the categories come in? And how that effect actual works John?

I'm interested in this 301 redirect too ... I have a handful of 404 errors as a result of making a bunch of pages (when I was a newb) that I thought I'd use but never did thus deleting them. Will this 301 redirect fix that or is there something else I can do?

This sounds like a training in the making John ... hint hint.

When you have deleted those pages, you have to delete them on GWT too, that will solve that problem

Thanks Loes. When I put the request in to delete on GWT does that count against me in Google's eyes?

I don't know, perhaps John (Mackie) knows? When I think logical, Google doesn't punish for removing pages

I deleted and renamed a few categories. That triggered 'no founds' in webmaster tool because Categories, like tags will get indexed. There is no punishment, it just may trigger millions of questions 'why are there so many no-founds'.

Yes, the plugin is easy to use, lightweight and will take care of it.

Nope, just remove the URL AND check on "delete from cache" in GWT. I still do the 301 re-direct in case visitors bookmarked the page

could you explain the process in steps? I am a little confused on what I should do.

When you remove a category, Google and the others do have the links in their caches. For example

http://factsaboutinternetmarketing.com/category/legit-online-programs

If I would remove this category, it would give a 404 error in WMT, which is not harmful, just annoying to look at

Download the plugin Simple 301 redirects

there are 2 fields to enter data

left field: enter the deleted URL (in my case)
category/legit-online-programs (don't need enter sitename)

right field: http://factsaboutinternetmarketing.com/

this would redirect to the home page, the blogroll on my site.

Next time google crawls your site, they see that there is a redirect and the error will not show again.

Very simple and easy to use. Now, that's for categories

If you delete a page/post

do the same thing, but also go to GWT and remove the URL + cache, just to be sure there won't be any 'no founds'

Thanks John :) It is much clearer now. I have a plugin already installed called 404 to 301. It automatically redirects all 404's to the homepage.

The last one down there: Post I deleted and forgot to redirect LOL

Oh my, 94 categories is a lot. I feel it is way too many and that nearly any subject can be pared down to a dozen or so.

As for the 404 errors I am not sure of a way around them but if I recall there is a process within Webmaster Tools that you can address them with Google.
