On my site, I’ve included content about well-known people in myniche (1960s women’s fashion), such as fashion designers andmodels. I’m now worried that the posts (which focus on what theydid during the 1960s) are a bit too much like the information foundon authority sites such as Wikipedia and are not ranking as well (if at all!) onsearch engines because of this.
Would it be better for me to (say) write a review of the celebrity's biography/autobiography or a film about them than to write contentwhich will more likely than not be competing with the content onauthority sites?

One good strategy would be to write specific things about a person. Instead of a general bio, write about what topics people are interested in. Instead of "about person XYZ", write
why did person XYZ get divorced from her husband
did person XYZ go to jail?
what are the best movies from person xyz
...etc
you can find what people are searching for using this technique: Alphabet Soup Technique - Using Google Instant to Find Keywords

I don't believe that the is anything terribly wrong with what you are doing. You could do some research and try to find some more obscure facts about those you write about (Jackie Kennedy did blah, blah, blah) and incorporate some of that into your articles.
You could also possible write about some lesser known or at least some that are less written about and you can become the authority.
