the long and short of it is learn as much as you can from as many places as you can. SEO specialism is not an easy thing to do, as you'll be expected to work miracles for companies (like getting them ranked 1 in every keyword they want to). One of the key things for SEO is building a site yourself, and getting it ranked for yourself.

One other thing, don't work on sites that aren't in whatever your native language is (that's not an insult or a dig, its just stating a fact) - the reason being that if you attempt to work on a site that you are not natively speaking then you will miss out on little things on that site that will cost you dearly in SEO

it takes time for a new website to get traffic.

Writing and publishing content on a regular basis will get the search engines to notice your website and they start to trust it. Rankings will start and that's when traffic will start to come in as well.
