How would I add a free ebook download to my home page to start building an email list?
You can upload your eBook to Amazon, then get the link, but put it in the confirmation page after someone signs up to your newsletter.
Another option is to put the eBook as an attachment within your autoresponder so people get it in their email when they sign up.

Make sure that you have the new subscriber turned off. Unless you are actively looking to have a forum site or membership site, there is no reason for this to be active.
Under Settings>> General where it says membership. Uncheck the box for anyone can register.

I don't believe your site has enough content, traffic or authority yet. Holding off with adsense for now until you are getting traffic would probably be a good idea.
