One of My Blog Post Is A Reference Within Wikipedia

The other day I wrote a blog post here about what happens when you type your domain name into Google.

This resulted from a question asked in chat and also if it is a good thing to have your website mentioned with another website.

In other words, there was a backlink from another site to this member’s site which was good to have in their case.

First, let’s quickly talk about backlinks and what they are what they mean for your website.

What is a Back Link?

A backlink it a hyperlink that can be seen and go in two ways.

Now as I was looking into this to provide an answer, I also typed in one of my domain names and noticed something that I really didn’t even think about that was of benefit to my site.

It certainly gave me a wonderful boost and brought about this blog post about backlinks.

As you can see in the image above, the article on Wikipedia is called The Nine Consciousness.

No biggie just another topic covered within the great Wikipedia.

However, I wrote a post on one of my websites about this very topic, the title was Nine Levels of Consciousness.

As we know Google will find similar keywords that can relate to the topic and use that as well.

At the time of writing this article which was back in 2016, as per our training I used a high authority site as an External link which was this article on Wikipedia.

In other words, this external link for me was a backlink to Wikipedia.

My website was only 2 years at this stage so not what you would call an authority site but using a high authority site to link to be the aim.

As far as I was concerned I just did what I had to do to cover my SEO duties to satisfy the external link part as that was it as far as I thought.

I thought no more on it until I did some further checking due to my previous blog here I mentioned earlier.

Then I noticed this On Google.

There is the topic The Nine Consciousness from Wikipedia.

Within the Meta-Description you see my website name highlighted as part of the description.

So that is nice to see and the feeling that your domain is mentioned within.

I looked it up by going to that topic and started looking into where my domain name fits into this article.

As I was scrolling down through this Wikipedia Article trying to find how or where my domain fits in.

Then right down toward the end, I found my answer.

At the bottom of all Wikipedia Articles, you will find Their References and notes.

Here there are 18 references Wikipedia has given to the article.

Here is a close up of some below in particular Reference 11

Now it states retrieved soon the 12thof May 2019 so I am guessing that is when Wikipedia added me as a reference to their Site even though my post was originally created in 2016 but I have had some updates done along the way as well

What does this mean?

It means a few things

1. 1. My original External link to this article gave Wikipedia a backlink to my site.
2. 2. As they saw some worth in my blog post that fits in with their article on Wikipedia by adding me as a reference they have given me a backlink from them.
3. 3. So should someone click either link that it highlighted in blue it will take them to my site and this means more potential visitors to my site.
4. 4. In doing so that external link has been fully completed as the original intent is to give and received a backlink as a result.
5. 5. Backlinks give extra SEO juice to both sites, not that Wikipedia needs much but certainly gives my site that added Google juice needed to become a bit more authority in this case on the topic at hand.

I know that Wealthy Affiliate does not focus on Backlinks so much and feels they are still not as important as they used to be prior to the Google Penguin update in 2014

However, there are many very high authority sites like Neil Patel, Moz, Backlinko, and Arefs just to name a few that still say there is importance in having and using backlinks.

One common aspect all have regardless of who they are the main part is to have backlinks as a natural sequence when writing high-quality posts.

Paying for backlinks, asking for backlinks from places like backlink farms, or getting backlinks from low-quality sites will not help your SEO, and can and most likely do more harm than good.

The main part you best focus on is to write high-quality engaging content for the benefit of your readers and use at least one External Link preferable to a high authority site such as Wikipedia.

Avoid low-quality or spammy websites as they won’t add any value to you.

Due Diligence with SEO

So basically follow the training given, and do your basic diligence with SEO such as the following.

• Use your focused keyword within the Title
• Add your focused keyword within the Meta description
• Create an Internal Link to another post within your website.
• Create an External link to another website and to one with high authority. Avoid linking to a competitor in the same niche. The last thing you want is to give a backlink to a competitor and they end up with the sale.
• Most importantly create highly engaging content for the benefit of your readers by answering what they are seeking.
• Don’t go chasing or paying for backlinks instead naturally have them including as stated above.
• When done right you will get a backlink as shown in this example above and that will help your SEO in many ways for your website.

This is what Wealthy Affiliate teaches and giving natural backlinks or receiving natural backlinks as given in the example above is the way to go.

Don’t go lining here, there, and everywhere for the sake of it but do everything in an honest and natural way as possible.
