A Reminder of How Blessed We Are

Yesterday, I had the privilege of working at a local food bank where I volunteer a few times per month. It was a particularly busy day, with clients lined up, waiting to check in and receive their hampers.

My usual job is to work in the back, packing groceries where I have virtually no interaction with the people using the food bank. However, yesterday I was placed by the lead person out front to liaise with the clients and hand out the hampers. Because of the volume and the wait times, I had a chance to visit with many of the people using the food bank services.

I experienced quite a range of emotions from my interactions: At times it was heartwarming; on occasion frustrating; and often it was heartbreaking. Were there people who were taking advantage of social assistance programs like the food bank? Sure, there were probably a handful. However, it was almost overwhelming to see and speak with so many people who are truly struggling. From those who were injured at work and have fallen behind on the bills, to those who are working full-time plus at minimum wage jobs that do not come near to covering the cost of living, to those who are trying to look after ailing parents or special needs children. Many were grateful to know they would have food for a few days. Some were ashamed that they had to rely on others, even for a short time.

While I was there, I was really too busy to think of anything else except the task at hand and the people I was serving. However, when I got home late last night, I couldn't help but be grateful for the blessings in my life. I am not wealthy by anyone's standard, but I have a sturdy roof over my head, a loving family, supportive friends, my own business that I love, and now another supportive community at WA where I am learning additional skills.

One of the things that made WA stand out to me when I first arrived here a couple of weeks ago is the "pay it forward" mentality of the community. Let us always be mindful of those around us who need a helping hand in life. And let us always remember - even on the difficult days - just how blessed we are.
