There are word press plugins that can assist you in changing the css without directly tampering with your theme. If you search for plugins in your site manager, search for "css" and you should see several.
Here's one:

It allows you to add custom css styles. You only need to add the following line below:
p{ color:black;}
This simple line changes the color of the text to black in your content.
You can also adjust it without the plugin, if you log into your site manager, go to appearance->customize->general settings and you should see a "custom css" box" that also allows you to enter custom css as well.

I am not sure what the genesis theme does, some themes do give that option.
I know you can use custom CSS to make the fonts however you like, dark, change color, make them bigger. That's what I do.
Google "Custom CSS for wordpress fonts" for articles that explain this method, it's not hard. The Custom CSS option is in the "Customize" area of every theme, usually listed as the last option.
I did it, I managed to change the Font to Arial which made it more eligible. Thanks for the assist :)

I use jaaxy Andy. I subscribe monthly, and use the traffic light system looking for the 'lowest hanging fruit' that might give me 40-50 visitors a month to my site. I feel that this right now is where I am best placed to start picking up traffic. As time goes on and I get my brand better known, I will be a little less picky with the keywords.
Ive been considering Jaaxy. Ive been useing the keyword tool within wa at the mo. Will that give me everything I need or would Jaaxy be far better?
I honestly feel that Jaaxy makes it so easy for me to get the right keyword or phrase. It offers up slightly different keyword phrases that you can consider, seeing the traffic light system as a guide. It also gives you rankings on those keywords on your website. I know you can get this with analytics but jaaxy has it too and its very convenient. Its little things like... do I choose the singular or plural of the phrase or word, do I change a word slightly ? I was going to write a piece for my WA website on Is My Niche Too Big? I went over to Jaaxy, and put that in, waste of time writing about that, there were far too many competing sites, but there were not many for 'Is my Niche Too Small?' perfect ! I think my subscription to Jaaxy is worth it, there are no limitations. I do think you can use it for free for a time to see how you like it, maybe thats the way forward to start off? :-)
I think im going to take the plunge later when I get hom and have a play with Jaaxy. For now ive written this post based on the keyword tool output and followed advice trying mot to worry so much about the number of returned results at this stage.

Content is king so dont get too bogged down with the keywords they will start paying off as you get more content and Google starts to crawl your website. Hope it goes well !

What you are missing is that you are searching for keyword results on Google and that should NEVER be done unless you understand what Google really is.
Google is a search engine not a keyword research tool.
Being a search engine, Google's job is to not only give you results of your keyword but to also give you ALL relevant results of your keyword. This is why you are getting results that are higher than what the WA keyword tool and Jaaxy are giving you.
People need to stop using Google for looking up keyword results because Google does not give accurate results on purpose, because that is not its job.
There is a way to get results that are close to what the WA keyword tool and Jaaxy gives, but it involves a few steps that are mostly a waste of time and would confuse many who still do not know the true function of Google.
Trust the results you are getting from the WA keyword tool and Jaaxy. They are accurate and Google is not. Do not try to validate them in Google.
ah ok. So do I need to clarify even that the larger authourity websites have got on page 1. Also what do you mean what google really is? do you have some material that can elaborate on that to help my understanding ?

Are the large authority websites you are seeing on Google page 1, organically or are they paid postings? If they are organic then it is because they have authority from being a mature website and have risen in the ranks because of that maturity in time.
Google is a search engine, plain and simple. Its job is to give you all relevant results of the keyword you typed in even if doesn't match your keyword exactly.
There a combination of paid ads and organic. I shall take onboard what you said and try not to panic lol. Think im trying to push to hard.
It takes many months of constant building of your website to see any significant rise in rankings to compete with the big sites.
