What to do when you rushed

Last night, I watched Jay's webinar where he shared 10 tips from his 10 years on WA. First off, happy anniversary Jay! But just because you've hit a milestone anniversary, don't even consider retiring. We still have much more to learn from you, sensei.

If I could pick my favorite tip, well, I can't. All 10 were good, and I feel like Jay laid out a good blueprint for people like me who have drifted around lately. So I'm sitting in the corner, having a little think to figure out where to go from here.

Jay gave tips from going from burnout into inspiration, and I wondered whether what I've been feeling would count as burnout. Nope, not really. Sure, I haven't been around WA lately, but it's not because I'm burnt out. It's because I'm resetting. Jay's first tip is don't rush, and I'm drifting because I did exactly what he advised us not to do - rush.

The first thing to do is to figure out for the reason for the rush. Mine was desperation. I was more concerned about speed than style points, and my efforts showed the lack of focus. I tried to be in a niche where I thought I should be, instead of one that I truly wanted to be in. I turned my passion into a chore. That sure sucks out the life in what you're doing, and you're phoning it in. If you're not invested in your site, why should anyone else bother with it?

There are 3 ways you can respond when you've realized you've rushed:
1. You can start completely over. Go back to step 1 and do it the right way.
2. You can patch the holes in what you've done and then move forward properly.
3. You can beat yourself up for rushing and stay stuck.

Guess which one I've been doing? Yup, and it doesn't work.

So today is a planning day. Even though I don't feel burnt out, I do think Jay's steps for flipping burnout into inspiration will help me decide whether to try option 1 or option 2. Either way, I'm making progress.

Oh, and I can pass along my own sure-fire tip for moving forward - listen to Jay's webinars. You can watch them live, or you can catch the replays. And if you haven't watched any of them yet, I would suggest starting with his 10 tips.
